A Message from the Head Teacher
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to the Term 1 edition of the KIEC Newsletter.
I would like to thank all our students, families, and staff for a wonderful start to the year. It has been a term full of exciting learning experiences and memorable activities.
This holiday period marks Easter for many Australians. Easter is a special holiday celebrated by many people around the world as part of the Christian faith. Please also remember that daylight savings ends soon, so don’t forget to set your clocks back an hour on Sunday, 5th April.
This term, our students participated in many engaging and fun activities. Highlights included the beach safety excursion to Cronulla Beach, which taught essential skills to stay safe in the water, as well as various sports events that encouraged teamwork and fitness. We also had an enriching visit to the museum where students explored history and culture, as well as a Harmony Day excursion to Central Sydney IEHS.
During the school holidays, I encourage all students to continue nurturing their English skills. Keep reading your favourite books and explore new ones—our school library is a wonderful resource for this. Whether you visit the library or read at home, daily reading helps maintain and improve literacy skills.
Additionally, there are plenty of fun and educational activities to enjoy in the local area during the break. Consider visiting parks, community events, or even discovering new hobbies that spark your curiosity. Have a read of this newsletter to find out about more holiday activities.
Thank you again for your ongoing support and commitment throughout the term. I look forward to seeing all our students back, ready for another great term of learning.

NSWEduChat
Students from Year 5 to Year 12 can now use NSWEduChat, the department’s safe and secure AI tool. It can be accessed through the NSW Student Portal.
The department has strong rules to keep student information private. Data collected by approved apps is not used to teach AI tools. These privacy rules help keep student data safe.
Students should use AI tools safely. This means not sharing private information like names, addresses, health details, money matters, or school records when using AI tools. Students should always check AI answers for accuracy and fairness and make sure they are suitable for school.
There is guidance to help families learn about the risks of new technology. This includes advice about deepfakes, AI companions, and tips for using AI safely.
Ways to support your child:
Talk about AI: Ask your child if and how they use AI at school. Remind them that AI isn’t always right.
Encourage balance: Show your child that AI is a helpful tool but shouldn’t replace their own thinking.
Know what’s allowed: Only use department-approved tools for schoolwork, and follow school guidelines. Free AI tools may not be safe.
Ask questions: If you have concerns, speak with your child’s teacher or school principal.

Our students had the wonderful opportunity to visit the Art Gallery of NSW to see the Art Express exhibition and other exhibitions in the gallery. We are grateful to Kogarah Community Services for their support in organising this excursion. We had an enjoyable cultural experience.
Welcome Program

Four of our students participated in the Welcome Program in Week 9 of Term 1 in preparation for their transition to Kogarah High School in Term 2. Students learnt about school rules and procedures and had an opportunity to attend some high school classes with their specially selected buddies.
Australian Museum

What a great day we had at the Museum. 3J, 4J and 4S were lucky to go on an excursion organised by Kogarah Community Service. Students learned about Australian Megafauna , ran from dinosaurs! and dove into the world of precious minerals and rocks.
Football NSW
Football NSW
During Harmony Week, 30 students were fortunate to have the opportunity to attend a gala day with Football NSW. A competition was played, with one team coming out on top. It was a great day of drills, playing and a delightful feast provided by the coaches and Football NSW.

During Harmony Week, Kogarah IEC joined Central Sydney IEC in their celebration of multiculturalism. It was a great day to see people from different cultures living together in harmony, embracing acceptance and diversity.
Beach Safety

On Wednesday 1st April, IEC students went to Cronulla for a beach safety excursion. Local lifeguards spoke to the students about beach signs, rips and sun safety. They also enjoyed a swim between the flags supervised by a lifeguard and learnt to use a surfboard.
International Student Lunch

Chinese dumplings, Vietnamese spring rolls were part of the International Student meetings this term. Students meet every few weeks to discuss life in Australia and help them with the settling in process. What a great group of International Students we have in the school.
Netball Day
Netball Day
The school was fortunate to be provided with a bus by Netball Australia to attend a gala day during Harmony Week. Students learned how to play a limited game of Netball and participated in competition with other schools. A multicultural feast was provided for students to eat together and enjoy the peace and harmony of Australia.

Reading club is always a successful lunchtime activity. It was good to hear students' stories about their experiences attending reading club. These students enjoy reading club and want to invite all students to join them.

What a great graduation assembly we had this term. Five students are off to high school. They will be missed and we wish them every thing good for their futures. Hope they come back and visit us to let us know how they are going in their new schools.
