The meeting of two cultures took place at Kamay Botany Bay on 29 April 1770.
With the Endeavour anchored in the bay, two row boats were lowered with about 40 men on board. They rowed towards the shore.
Two Gweagal men stood looking out, ready to meet these strangers.
The British men tried to offer gifts of beads and nails however the Gweagal people were not interested.
Tupaia, a man from Tahiti tried to speak with the Gweagal men. In New Zealand he was able to communicate with the Maori people however it did not work at Kamay.
The Gweagal men called out, warrawarrawa warrawarrawa
The English fired a musket in their general direction. This was supposed to scare them, but instead of that, the two men stood their ground, and one of them threw a rock.
Another musket was fired, this time at one of the men. One Gweagal man was hit on the legs. He managed to throw one of his spears before running off to fetch a shield. When the two men returned they saw the men of the Endeavour standing on the land.
