Vegetation and soils on a slope represented as a cross-section diagram.
At the base of the slope is tidal creek. The creek banks are gently sloping river flats.
The soil along the river flat is disturbed alluvial soil. Mangrove trees grow in the intertidal zones on the river banks, behind the mangroves are weeds and saltmarsh. Behind that grow salt-tolerant trees called casuarinas.
A steep slope rises from the river flats. It is covered with sandstone derived top soils with sandy clay subsoils, there are some rock outcrops where the underlying Hawkesbury sandstone juts of of the hillside. These soils support smooth-barked apple (Angophora) and Sydney peppermint trees. Further up the slope grow red bloodwoods and scribbly gums. At the bottom of the slope the topsoils have accumulate more organic material.
The very top of the slope is characterised by clay-based soils. In it grows grey gums, ironbark, turpentine and stringy bark trees.
