On Thursday, 26th September 2024, SBS Australia visited our school to film a special segment on Mongolian culture and how we support Mongolian students. This feature was included on the SBS World News television programme on Sunday 15th December, 2024. It was also on SBS News Radio.
Why Mongolian culture?
A recent NSW survey revealed a 40% increase in Mongolian families over the past year. SBS aims to explore how this cultural shift is reflected in schools, and our morning event provided a wonderful opportunity to showcase how we engage with and celebrate Mongolian heritage.
The event began with a special assembly featuring a bilingual Acknowledgement of Country in Mongolian and English, the school song, and a Mongolian lullaby. Students participated in Mongolian dancing, created a collaborative snow lotus flower, made ger (yurt) hats, and crafted bookmarks in traditional Mongolian script. We were fortunate to have volunteers from the Mongolian Knucklebone Shooting Association teach students this traditional game, and the head of the association kindly gifted the school Mongolian games and puzzles.
Morning tea featured delicious khuushuur pastries from Ger House in Rhodes. A heartfelt thank you to SBS, and to Ms Marchiello, Ms Yasugi, Ms Ganaa, and our executive staff for organising this special celebration, as well as our Mongolian community, many of whom attended in traditional deel clothing.
