Cessnock will benefit from a $30,000 road safety boost through the NSW Government’s Road Safety Grant program to help reduce death and injures from road crashes.
Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Roads and Infrastructure Chris Gulaptis said Kurri Kurri Community Services was one of 25 community groups across the state to secure a grant for its Cessnock Youth Driver Program.
“The grant will provide local young people with an opportunity to gain valuable supervised log-book hours from trained, vetted volunteers, and provide them with a solid foundation of road safety strategies to build their capacity as safer drivers,” Mr Gulaptis said.
“Projects like this allow organisations the opportunity to run a local project that will increase road safety awareness and understanding.
“I’m thrilled this organisation will welcome a funding boost to help roll out its project to increase road safety awareness and support safer road use.
“This program is open to community groups across the state, and this latest round was one of the most competitive, with 27 projects from 63 applicants chosen to receive funding.”
Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said the grants play an important role in the delivery of the NSW Government’s Road Safety Plan 2021, which is guiding statewide efforts to reduce deaths and injuries from road crashes.
“More than 160 projects have been funded through the program since its inception in 2015, and now we’re rolling out even more because community groups are in a unique position to connect with local people about local road safety issues,” Mr Toole said.
“Community groups can reinforce our road safety messages in targeted ways that can make a real difference in encouraging people to be safer road users.
“One life lost on our roads is one too many, so programs like this to help drive home the road safety message, will make a real difference in regional communities.”
The funding of up to $5,000 for small projects and up to $30,000 for larger initiatives has been awarded for local community road safety projects, such as educational programs to increase road safety awareness in communities across the state.
