Hi Everyone
There is so much to celebrate and congratulate our talented and hard working students on over these past 2 weeks!
With the due dates for HSC practical works rolling past, we have had the pleasure of viewing the students' exemplary artistic and literary creations.
Students from English Extension 2 showcased their major works in the library on 28 August, followed by the opening of the HSC Visual Arts exhibition in St Georges Hall. Last week, the Design and Technology major works were on display in the common room, followed by an evening of Music 1, Music 2 and Music Extension performances at the Soiree evening in St George's Hall.
Moving from one event to the next, it was impressive to see the diversity of themes so successfully explored by students across a variety of artistic genres. The passion, integrity, creativity and talent of our students is inspiring and reminds our community of what a special school NHSPA is.
The HSC Drama performance examinations concluded last week with many students feeling extremely proud of their work. We wish all our Music students the best of luck as they complete their practical examinations this week.
Our HSC Dance students have already received their nominations for 'Callback'. Callback is a celebration of the outstanding talent of students who presented their work as part of the 2024 Higher School Certificate Dance Practical Examinations. It is a showcase of exemplary dance performances, compositions and films presented by students from across New South Wales, from all school systems.
We are thrilled to announce that 23 of our Year 12 Dance students received nominations this year with 12 students receiving nominations in all three areas of the course, and a total of 53 nominations being made overall.
Congratulations to all the Dance students on their exemplary performances! In addition, some of the Co-Curricular Dance Companies were selected to represent the school at the State Dance Festival this week. Tickets can be purchased through the Seymour Centre Box office. Good luck dancers!
This Thursday 12 September was 'R U OK? Day'. A lot can happen in a year, a month, a week. Whether it’s your friend, family member, colleague, partner, or teammate, the people you care about go through life’s ups and downs every day. By having regular, meaningful conversations, you build trust and normalise talking about what’s really going on, so when the people in your world find themselves struggling, they know you’re someone they can talk to.
NHSPA has recognised this day of action by hosting a breakfast on Thursday morning followed by a game of 'student versus staff' in Dodgeball. Students had the opportunity to write little notes of kindness to other students or teachers and send them anonymously.
What are you doing for RUOK? Day
R U OK? is a national suicide prevention charity and registered public health promotion that encourages people to stay connected and have conversations that can help others through difficult times. At NHSPA, we promote RUOK? day with 'Staff V Student' Dodgeball games at lunch time. The teachers were very lucky to have some additional help from the Year 12 cohort to help defeat EVERY year in our annual 'Staff V Student' Dodgeball games. Students also had delicious cheese toasties before school and received their Warm and Fuzzy cards from their friends. It was so great to see students and staff enjoying the day at the various activities.
A big thank you to all the S.E.E.D members that spent a lot of their lunch times bringing this event together and to Newtown Bourke Street Bakery for supplying all the sourdough bread for the Cheese toasties! A massive thank you to Deputy Principal Karl Pico and our SSO Dean Adams who were fundamental in bringing this event together.
How to ask "Are you OK?" | R U OK?
R U OK? is a suicide prevention charity encouraging Australians to start life-changing conversations, when they're needed most. Four simple steps guide you to ask "Are you OK?", and help someone in need safely and comfortably. A conversation can change a life.

NSW Deputy Principals' State Conference
"You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make." Jane Goodall
Last week, Nilaufer Rajwar, Karl Pico and I attended the annual NSW Deputy Principals' Conference held in Sydney. The theme was 'Leaders in Learning' and we attended a number of interesting and informative sessions on leadership, teaching and learning, wellbeing, and curriculum.
The opportunity to reflect on practice and process through professional dialogue with other school leaders was invaluable and we hope to incorporate what we learned going forward.
Have a wonderful remainder of the term!

Uniform
Newtown High School of the Performing Arts is a uniform school. Uniform is only one aspect of the high expectations culture of our school and our uniform is looking good!
There has been a very visible improvement this term and that is fantastic to see. And we know it will continue to improve as uniform expectations become accustomed practice.
Students are expected to be in correct uniform every day. If there is a reason that a student cannot be in uniform on a particular day, a note, signed by parent/carer, needs to be given to the Swipe Room before school and the student will receive a uniform pass.
Uniform is a safety issue, a social issue around equity, around image, and uniform is often linked with behaviour.
A REMINDER TO EVERYONE:
NHSPA sports trackpants are allowed ✓
Jeans or leggings are not allowed X
NHSPA jackets/jumpers are allowed ✓
Non-school jumpers or hoodies are not allowed X
Black leather shoes must be worn ✓
Thank you to the SEED Student Leadership Team (led by Head Teacher Teaching & Learning, Ms Hannah Hindmarsh), who are designing an NHSPA Hoodie which will be added soon to our uniform options.
A lunchtime detention (half lunch) will be issued if a student is out of uniform more than three times.
An email will be sent alerting parents/carers that their child has been out of uniform and asking for their support.
Pickles has informed us that they have recently been low in sizes 12 and 14 sweaters, but they should be in stock now. If you have any questions about accessing the correct uniform from Pickles, or difficulty paying for our uniform, or any queries, please contact the school.
Student Attendance
The evidence is clear that consistent attendance is the essential first step for your child to have a positive experience at school. Every day matters for your child’s learning. In recent years we’ve seen too many students miss a day of school here and there. Missing school for students means missing assignments, time with friends, an important Maths lesson or getting picked for a sports team. With days missed, years are lost.
Students are required to attend school every day, whether it’s the first or last day of the term, Mondays, Fridays or days dedicated to sports carnivals, school excursions and incursions.
Help us make sure your child is achieving their best and stays ahead in their learning with regular school attendance. The more time your child attends school, the greater their opportunity to learn and improve their wellbeing. Together, let’s build positive attendance habits for a lifetime.
If your child is absent from school, please let us know why as soon as possible, even if it is just a few minutes at the start or end of the school day. Of course, there will be times when your child is unable to be at school (like when they are unwell). Medical appointments should take place outside school hours where possible and family holidays should be taken in term breaks.
If your child is feeling anxious about coming to school and you need support, please reach out to your child’s Deputy Principal, Year Adviser or myself (Deputy Principal, Karl Pico) directly. Our staff are here to work with you and your child to help them attend school each and every day. There are also helpful resources for parents and carers on the Every Day Matters website.
Thank you again for working with our teachers and support staff to make sure your child is at school, on time, every day. We all want to see our students learn, grow and belong in our equitable and outstanding education system.
Student Emails and Social Network Restrictions
IMPORTANT!
From Day 1 Term 4, students will no longer be able to use their school email address (@education.nsw.gov.au) to access social media, gaming, instant messaging and similar platforms. This means they will also not be able to retrive password-recovery emails and the like from these platforms.
The NSW Department of Education is making an important change to help keep our students safe online, reduce the risk of cyber threats and make sure your student email accounts are used for their intended educational purposes only.
What’s happening?
Starting Day 1 Term 4, you won’t be able to use your student email address to sign up for, or recover access to any social media, gaming, instant messaging or similar accounts.
What you need to do!
If you have signed up for a social media, gaming, instant messaging or similar account using your student email address, please change to a personal email address on each platform by Sunday 13 October to make sure you don't lose access to the account. Here’s how:
Log in to each account.
Go to the account settings and update your email address to a personal one. Add a mobile number too, if you haven’t already.
Why this is happening
The department is making this change to ensure all student accounts are being used for their educational purposes, and to help protect you from risks online. Using your personal email address for these platforms instead of your student email address reduces the chances of someone gaining access to information in your school account.
NSW Health recommends students and staff stay home and see a doctor if suffering from whooping cough symptoms
NSW Health advises that whooping cough (sometimes called pertussis) is circulating at high levels in NSW and affecting school aged children in particular, with incidence highest among children aged 10 to 14 years old, followed by 5 to 9 year olds.
Whooping cough is a serious respiratory illness. It is highly contagious and spreads easily between kids and families. It can be life threatening for babies, especially newborns.
Whooping cough usually begins like a cold, with early symptoms including a cough, mild fever, tiredness and blocked or runny nose. The cough will usually get much worse and may progress to severe coughing fits that can last for many weeks. Intense and rapid coughing fits can be followed by gasping and a ‘whoop’ sound.
Whooping cough is spread in the air as droplets, usually by coughing or sneezing. Vaccination provides the best protection from whooping cough.
Contact: Incident Report and Support Hotline
Call: 1800 811 523
To help stop the spread of whooping cough, NSW Health recommends:
Children who are sick (including those with cold and flu symptoms) stay home and away from other children until their symptoms have resolved or as directed by their doctor.
If a child is diagnosed with whooping cough, they should stay home for 5 days after they start antibiotics, or 21 days after their cough starts.
Parents seek treatment and testing advice through their GP when their child is has symptoms of whooping cough. Parents can also call healthdirect day or night on 1800 022 222 for advice.
Parents can help protect their children by making sure all their children are vaccinated on time.
It is very important for pregnant women to be vaccinated during each pregnancy to protect the new baby in its first few months of life when it is too young to be protected by vaccination.
If parents are concerned and need health advice, they can call healthdirect on 1800 022 222. Healthdirect is free and available 24 hours a day, 7 days. A registered nurse will answer the call and provide health advice and connect families to the right care for their child.
This fortnight, the Prefects have introduced a new HSC study initiative to support our cohort through the upcoming exam season. We are excited to announce the success of our student-led study sessions, where volunteers have been scheduled to lead mini-lessons before, during, and after school. These student facilitators not only enhance their own understanding by teaching, but the feedback from their peers has been overwhelmingly positive, as students benefit from viewing challenging topics from a fresh perspective. As we approach the final weeks of the term before graduation, all classes are focused on last-minute exam revisions.
Simultaneously, the Prefects are enthusiastically planning our Celebration Week for Week 10 and reflecting on our legacy as we decide on our Year Group’s gift to the school.
We wish the Year 11 cohort the best of luck with their Preliminary Examinations. We hope that, despite the stress, they can cherish the valuable moments at NHSPA that we will all miss after graduation.
Year 12 students are gearing up for their graduation and studying extremely hard for their upcoming HSC exams
We wish them all the best !
If you have any suggestions/ ideas or feedback for the Prefects, please come and speak to us or fill out this form:

Year 12 Graduation Ceremony - Friday 27 September 2024
York Theatre, Seymour Centre
Year 12 students are to assemble in the courtyard outside the Seymour entrance at 10.30am in full school uniform.
The Year 12 Graduation is a free event, and 2 tickets will be allocated to each student. These tickets will be ready for collection at the Seymour Centre Box Office on the day of Graduation from 10.30am (under your child’s name). No more than two family members for each student will be able to attend due to limited seating.
We look forward to seeing you on Friday 27 September when Year 12 can celebrate their graduation with a fitting and spectacular farewell.
Year 11 Design and Technology
Students have been showcasing their creativity and problem-solving skills through an Illuminate assessment task focused on innovative lighting solutions.
This project challenges students to design and create functional yet aesthetically striking lighting fixtures that address real-world needs. Using a variety of materials and techniques, they have explored themes such as sustainability, modern design trends, and user experience.
The final products reflect the students' ability to integrate form with function, demonstrating their growing understanding of design principles, technology applications, and innovative thinking. Their efforts have not only highlighted their creativity but also their potential as future designers and innovators.
Year 10 Design and Technology
Students are in the process of working on their first mini-major work, a self-directed project that allows them to explore their own creative ideas while learning new skills.
As they develop their designs, students are experimenting with different tools and techniques, including using the 3D printer to bring their ideas to life. One student has taken on the challenge of working with the lathe, gaining hands-on experience in shaping and refining their project.
This task is providing the students with a valuable introduction to a variety of design processes, encouraging creativity while building their technical expertise.
Year 7 Mandatory Technology
As part of their Agriculture unit, students actively maintain the school's vegetable gardens.
This hands-on experience teaches them about plant life cycles, sustainable gardening practices, and the basics of growing their own food. Students take responsibility for planting seeds, watering, weeding, and monitoring the growth of various vegetables.
The Year 12 Biology students attended the Museum of Human Disease @ UNSW which contains nearly 1,500 diseased human tissue specimens. The collection demonstrates hundreds of diseases and their complications including HIV/AIDs, cancer, strokes, heart attacks, diabetes, genetic diseases and the effects of drugs.
The day consisted of a lecture on infectious and non-infectious disease followed by self-paced activities to view the various specimens.
The second half of the day recapped module Heredity and Genetic Change along with guided activities. A great opportunity to revise the HSC Biology course!

Tuesday 24 September 2024
6 pm - 9 pm St Georges Hall
Over three huge days last week our HSC Drama cohort presented their group and individual projects for the HSC Examiners. Every single student went above and beyond to present imaginative and beautifully performed work. Prior to that of course, we had the successful submission of the non-performance individual projects which were all so impressive.
Year 12 Drama are an extraordinary cohort who are not only super talented, they are resilient, collaborative and supportive of one another.
Thank you to our Years 11 and 10 Extension students who were essential and valuable audience members and to Chloe Nicolson and Rain Sharkey from Year 11 Entertainment who played an invaluable role in the successful running of the exams.
Year 12 Drama, we are so proud of you!
Congratulations to 7H and Year 10 Drama Extension who performed as part of the 'Lights Up!' Drama Festival held at Riverside Theatres Parramatta.
The 'Lights Up!' Drama Festival provides the opportunity to showcase the skills and talents of NSW public school students and teachers from Kindergarten to Year 12 in creating and performing drama for an audience.
The festival encourages and supports the development of drama programs at a school level by providing teachers with a valuable platform for engaging students in preparing drama for performance as well as promoting the arts as a vital part of the school curriculum.
Students benefit from the opportunity to work towards a quality performance in a professional venue and be enthused through interaction with other drama students. Both 7H and Year 10 Extension made it through a rigorous audition process and were selected to perform as part of a program of outstanding work from all over the metropolitan area.
Congrats on your fantastic performances!

Year 9 - You Be The Coach with Newtown Public School
Leading and coaching is a challenging skill to develop and master, and Year 9 PDHPE have been put to the challenge!
As part of their coursework, Year 9 have devised coaching plans for the students of Newtown Public School to participate in. It has been great to see the students step up and promote learning new skills (aligned to the K-6 curriculum) for lifelong physical activity participation.
Year 11 - BFT Newtown
Year 11 PDHPE are currently studying the topic "Fitness Choices" evaluating why people exercise, types that they participate in and what motivates individuals to continue participating.
It is a timely reminder studying the importance of physical activity and the significant benefits on our overall health and wellbeing. So we took the opportunity to participate in some physical activity across the road at BFT Newtown. After 15 challenging stations using a variety of free weights and machines, there were quite a few red faces, but an overall feeling of achievement at the end of a busy day and at the end of the Year 11 course work!
Well done!

Year 8 Bligh Zone Gala Day
On Wednesday 28 August, Year 8 participated in the annual Bligh Zone Gala Day. This day is designed to promote participation in physical activity and is a great way for students to develop sporting and teamwork skills while competing against other local high schools. Students participated very well on a very hot and windy day.
Year 8 teams were coached on the day by selected Years 9 and 10 students. This was the first time coaching a gala day for most of them, and they represented NHSPA admirably and were great role models. These Years 9 and 10s will have another opportunity to develop their coaching skills at the upcoming Year 7 Gala Day on Thursday Week 9.
Open Boys & Girls AFL 9s Gala Day
Congratulations to both the Open Girls and Boys AFL 9s teams for representing NHSPA admirably in what was a competitive and very warm day.
A special congratulations to the boys team for making it to the Grand Final on the day and coming a close second the Blackwattle Bay! They demonstrated great perseverance and adversity as they did not have many players on the bench due to some late withdrawals and injuries - well done boys.
Stand-out players on the day were Harper Crespi and Gabriel Giltinan. On the girls team, captains Giorgia Ruggieri and Alisa Herceg demonstrated great leadership and technical skill, and a special mention to first-time AFL player Nina Peros who was selected in the Bligh Zone team of the tournament.
Well done to all involved!
Open Boys & Girls Futsal Bligh Zone Gala Day at Perry Park
The Open Boys played well after a rough start losing the first two games.
The team made it to the semi-final and ended up placing 3rd overall
Congratulations!
The Open Girls team played great all day with a rotating roster. They found the groove towards the end with a few close games and a win to finish off the day.
A great effort from the girls!

PARENT ADVICE for Cyber Bullying from the eSafetyCommissioner
Use parental controls: Parental controls are software tools that allow you to monitor and limit what your child sees and does online.
They can be set up to do things like:
Block your child from accessing specific websites, apps or functions (like using a device’s camera, or the ability to buy things).
Filter different kinds of content — such as ‘adult’ or sexual content, content that may promote self-harm, eating disorders, violence, drugs, gambling, racism and terrorism.
Allow you to monitor your child’s use of connected devices, with reports on the sites they visit and the apps they use, how often and for how long.
Set time limits, blocking access after a set time.
If a device or program is shared by multiple members of your family, you should be able change the tool settings to reflect each user’s age and skills.
