NHSPA is committed to fostering and nurturing the holistic wellbeing of our school community through strengthening student voice, self-efficacy, and a sense of belonging within a safe and inclusive environment. NHSPA aims to develop flourishing learners and leaders through explicit teaching and modelling positive behaviour. Underpinned by the school ethos of Excellence, Creativity, and Equity, we aim to implement structured, robust wellbeing programs and initiatives that will build rich connections within our community.
Key wellbeing initiatives delivered this term include:
Year 6 to 7 Transition Program: Year 6 students from Camdenville, Newtown, Newtown North and St Peters Public schools were invited to participate in mini lessons and workshops designed to provide students with a hands-on high school experience. Students were able to meet members of the Wellbeing Team and Peer Support Leaders who will be guiding them through their next phase of schooling. A huge thank you to all the staff involved. Feedback from students and the primary school staff has been overwhelmingly positive ensuring that students develop a strong sense of belonging and connection with NHSPA.
Girls Fit for Change program: This new wellbeing initiative in partnership with Marrickville Police is designed to support young girls in Year 7-9 through regular mentoring sessions, participation in seminars and practical activities. The focus of the initiative is to build and nurture skills in resilience, improve sense of belonging and harm minimisation. The seven-week program is delivered by the Newtown Police Youth Engagement Officers, facilitators from Barnardos and health care professionals focus on key themes including:
- Healthy Relationships / Sexual health
- Social media
- Body image
- Drugs / alcohol / smoking / vaping
- Youth and legal matters
- Interview skills / job skills
Targeted and proactive initiatives are key components of wellbeing programs at NHSPA that support the academic, social, emotional and physical wellbeing of students. Thank you to our Student Support Officers and Year Advisers in nurturing partnerships with our local support networks enabling programs to be delivered at NHSPA.
Peer Bridge Program: This initiative in partnership with NHSPA, Newtown Neighbourhood Centre, Newtown Public school and Camdenville Public, is designed to support students transitioning from primary to high school, fostering meaningful relationships through peer mentoring and reinforcing essential psychosocial protective factors during this critical stage of development. Selected Year 9 (2025) students will work with Year 7 (2025) students as mentors guiding selected Year 7 students through a structured Transition and Orientation Program. Selected mentors have completed a mentoring session and have met their mentees whom they will support during their transition to high school. This program not only complements NHSPA Year 6 to 7 Transition Program and Orientation program but also provides an opportunity for Year 8 students to refine and extend their leadership skills.
Year 7 Gardening Program: This weekly program delivered during Term 4 supports a small group of students in Year 7 to develop social skills and build resilience. Once a week during period 4, students are mentored by the staff and oversee the school’s veggie garden.
Year 10 to 11 Transition Program: Incorporating the mandatory Life Ready Program, the transition program is designed to prepare and support senior students as they encounter situations related to health and safety as they become more independent and gain more responsibilities. It provides opportunities for students to build the functional knowledge and skills for life post school. As part of the Year 10 to 11 Transition program, students will be participating in a Respectful Relationships program, Love Bites and study skills workshops which are delivered by external presenters as well as completion of All of My Own Work and various seminars delivered by staff to prepare them for the demands of senior schooling. This three-day program will also allow our new Year 11 students who will be joining NHSPA in 2025 to build strong connections with students and staff and reduce the stress associated with starting at a new school.
Assessment and Reporting: Term 4 is an extremely busy term with students completing assessments. During this phase of learning, students are strongly encouraged to seek feedback and use the various supports available including attending the homework study centre after school, meeting with mentors for organisational and study tips and being aware of the school’s assessment policy. Student academic performance will be reported in their Semester 2 reports, reflecting their commitment and engagement in set learning tasks. Students in Years 9-11 will meet with a member of the Wellbeing Team to reflect on their goals and academic progress later in the term. Feedback from the reports and coaching conversations will then be used to evaluate progress and plan for further improvements.
STRATEGIC IMPROVEMENT PLAN
As part of the School Excellence cycle, NHSPA will be commencing a new Strategic Improvement Plan 2025-2028. As we indicated in the previous Bulletin this term and copied again below, initial consultation across the wider school community has begun. We thank the wonderful teachers of NHSPA for their subject expertise, their passion and collaborative commitment to excellence in teaching. We also thank our community for their continued support. Please see the NHSPA Vision and Context Statements: Draft 3 NHSPA Vision & Context Statements 1st Nov 2024.docx as well as our Strategic Directions and purpose statements below.

Strategic Direction 1 Student Growth and Attainment. Purpose: To enable students to grow and attain their personal best in learning through explicit, consistent, research-informed teaching. Through high quality teaching and learning programs, targeted professional learning, and effective use of data, collective efficacy and a culture of evaluation will be strengthened to foster educational excellence and lift student achievement.
Strategic Direction 2 Excellence in Teaching and Learning. Purpose: To sustain a vibrant, high expectations learning culture by ensuring all teaching and learning is research informed. Educational excellence will be driven by the High Potential and Gifted Education Policy and What Works Best research underpinning all aspects of teaching and learning.
Strategic Direction 3 Excellence in Learning Environments and Wellbeing Systems. Purpose: To strengthen and nurture inclusive, connected, positive teaching and learning environments to promote students’ academic and emotional wellbeing. To foster an arts-rich education by developing state of the art performance and learning spaces that provide opportunities for all students to develop and extend their gifts and talents as creative, engaged, socially responsible and thriving citizens.
Student Led Learning Conferences (Years 7 and 8)
At Newtown High School of the Performing Arts, we aim to empower our students to understand and have agency in their own learning. Reflecting upon and discussing learning helps students to understand how they learn, what their strengths and areas for improvement are and to develop future learning goals. Student Led Learning Conferences and e-learning Portfolios are an integral part of our approach.
Please find below the information you will need for a successful Student Led Learning Conference with your child.
What is a Student Led Learning Conference (SLLC)?
Student Led Learning Conferences provide students and parents/carers with an opportunity to meet and discuss learning at a designated time. Research shows that these types of discussions with a student’s support team allow students to consolidate learning and develop goals for future learning.
Students have been working closely with teachers to create an online e-Learning Portfolio (e-LP) that highlights their learning journey. Students select evidence of their learning to upload to their portfolio, which may include work in progress, finished products or photographs of learning in progress and are encouraged to choose evidence which shows their own personal learning triumphs, these will be different for each student.
Students may also include feedback from peers and teachers and self-reflections on both how and what they have learnt in each subject.
The process of selecting evidence, writing self-reflections and discussing their attributes as learners assists students to deepen their understanding of how they learn. This approach stems from research on brain plasticity and encourages students to identify and actively work on developing dispositions for learning.
Students will share their e-LP with parents/carers at the Student Led Learning Conference and discuss their learning across all their courses.
When is the conference?
Term 4, Week 6 or 7. Choose a time that suits you.
Where are Student Led Learning Conferences?
This year the conference will take place at your home or a suitable location.
What do parents/carers need to do?
Ask your child when a good time would be to discuss their learning dedicating approximately 30 minutes to the conversation.
At the designated time your child will show you their e-Learning Portfolio, including tabs and reflections on their learning for each of their courses. They will discuss what and how they have been learning. Parents are encouraged to engage in the discussion and ask questions.
If your child needs some prompting to elaborate you could consider asking some of the following questions of your child:
• What are your strengths as a learner in this particular subject?
• What are some areas you would like to improve in this subject?
• What skills were developed over the course of the year?
• What are your learning goals for this term, 2024 or the future?
• What ways could parents/carers help foster these goals?
Parents/carers and students will be sent a link to a survey to gauge your feedback on the success of the SLLC. This helps us to continually improve and adapt and we thank you in advance for your contribution.

This week our Year 12 students, after completing their HSC, have been back in the studio rehearsing a Year 12 item for Dance Showcase and we took the opportunity for them to perform their work in progress to our current Year 7 Dance students.
The Year 7 students loved watching the Year 12s and also performed their class dance for the Year 12s! It was a wonderful moment to see the Seniors with Year 7 and both years were inspired by what they saw!
Again we congratulate Year 12 on all they have achieved and we look forward to watching them perform at their final NHSPA Dance Showcase!

The school provides an opportunity for students to have instrumental and/or vocal lessons at NHSPA with professional tutors. The lessons take place during the school day on a rotational basis so that students do not miss the same class each week. Most lessons are half an hour in duration once a week over each school term.
This opportunity is available to all students enrolled in Newtown High School of the Performing Arts.
Students are reminded that they need to swipe in and out of every lesson.

Hard at work in the library on creative ideas for 'Newstown' !
Students in Year 9 have been working on their Romanticism unit in English – here they have been crafting poems on encounters with the Sublime.
Holly Roden composed this evocative passage:
"A weeping willow stretched its hands from the roots buried to mantle, up and out, into the lavender sky above. Braids of mossy leaves curtained their view."
Last week, teachers in the HSIE faculty had the great pleasure to attend a walking tour of significant sites around Redfern, led by Auntie Donna Ingram. We started at the National Centre for Indigenous Excellence, then were taken to Jarjum College, the statue of Mum Shirl at St Vincent de Paul's Catholic Church, the Aboriginal Medical Centre, Aboriginal Dance Theatre, Tribal Warrior and the AES (Aboriginal Employment Strategy).
We learnt about the history, language and current issues of the local community, indigenous enterprises, and people who have created positive change in our community. This experience will greatly enhance our practice as History, Geography, Legal Studies and Business Studies teachers.
GEOGRAPHY - Barangaroo Excursion
Our intrepid senior geographers set out once again on a rather chilly Monday, under steely grey skies, to investigate the changing urban morphology of the Darling Harbour precinct, as part of their mandatory fieldwork requirements for the HSC course. After meeting at Central station, we toured through the Central Park development exploring themes of urban decay, renewal and consolidation as well as the incorporation of environmental sustainability. Whilst being slightly outside the official Darling Harbour precinct, it does provide a fantastic example of the changing face of Sydney’s urban landscape.
From there, we wandered down the Goods Line connecting Central to Darling Harbour and discovered evidence of the industrial past from this area and how it has been transformed into a well-designed elevated pedestrian walkway. The beautifully presented Darling Square development was our next destination and provided a chance for our first pitstop to ‘refuel’ with a few tasty treats and discuss the design elements that make this area such a popular, accessible and functional part of the new dynamic of Sydney. We were even able to commemorate Remembrance Day at this point as a nearby ceremony could be heard from our position in Darling Square and our group sat in respectful silence throughout this brief recognition of World War One’s end.
From there it was on past Tumbalong Park, The Chinese Gardens, the ICC and towards the Pyrmont Bridge to investigate further evidence of Sydney’s growing status as a leading ‘world city’. The students were fantastic as always, showing enthusiasm and great spirit throughout the day despite the somewhat inclement weather (thankfully the rain had still held off to this stage!). Across the bridge, past King Street Wharf and towards the newly developed Barangaroo site, we finished up a few of the workbook pages before letting the students free to fill their (as they told me repeatedly) very hungry bellies.
With lunch done, head count done and all accounted for, we continued on to the wonderfully revitalised headland of the Darling Harbour precinct that is Barangaroo Reserve. Some more discussions and investigations were conducted before the threatening clouds overhead finally broke, and it was time to leave. The newly finished and much-hyped Barangaroo station on the Metro line served as our exit point from what had been a very successful day of research. Thanks once again to Mr Field for all his efforts and to the students for being their magnificent selves.
Stage 6 Food Technology
Our new Year 12 Food Technology students are diving into an exciting study of the Australian Food Industry, with a particular focus on the baking sector.
This term, they are learning to make bread from first principles, exploring the art and science behind traditional techniques. Students are gaining hands-on experience with starter cultures and sourdough bread, understanding the fermentation process that gives this beloved staple its unique flavour and texture.
Additionally, the curriculum emphasises the importance of organic and sustainable farming practices, allowing students to appreciate their benefits not just for individual health, but also for society and the environment. Through this comprehensive approach, students are becoming more informed food producers and consumers, ready to contribute positively to the food landscape in Australia.
Year 7 Agriculture
The Year 7 Agriculture class is excited to report that our vegetable garden continues to thrive and flourish! Students have been actively involved in planting, nurturing, and harvesting a variety of vegetables, learning essential agricultural skills along the way.
This hands-on experience enhances their understanding of plant growth and sustainability and fosters a sense of responsibility and teamwork. As they monitor the garden's progress, they are discovering the importance of biodiversity and the role of vegetables in a healthy diet.
With each harvest, students are gaining confidence and inspiration to explore their culinary creativity, making the vegetable garden a vibrant and integral part of their learning journey this term!
NSW Combined High Schools Representative
Diksha Chowdhary
Diksha (Year 9) has represented NHSPA since Year 7 in cricket.
Recently Diksha was the equal leading wicket-taker for Sydney East team with 7 wickets. She had the best figures of 3-20 in the final leading Sydney East to win the NSW CHS Girls Cricket Championships for the first time in over 20 years.
As a result of her performances, Diksha was selected in the Under 15 NSW CHS team to play in the NSW All Schools tournament in Tuggerah next week. This is an amazing achievement, and we are extremely proud of your achievement - past NHSPA students who have been selected in these teams have gone on to represent Australia at the Olympic and International level. We can't wait to see you on the world stage!
Congratulations !
Year 9 PASS are currently studying the SEPEP (Sport Education in Physical Education Program) model.
As part of their course work, students are learning how to create Gala Days, tournaments and round robin events, including all the roles that are required at these events (marshal, official, referee, scorer).
Students were offered to complete a Referee course in addition to their classwork.
Our Year 11 cohort have started their first HSC topic: Sports Medicine. Students are currently studying how sports injuries are classified and managed, how sports medicine address the demands of specific athletes, the role actions play in enhancing the wellbeing of athletics and how injuries are rehabilitated.
As part of their studies, students got the chance to tape their peers' ankles, wrist and thumbs.
On Tuesday 19 November, the day had finally arrived for 70 NHSPA students, who from Term 1 2024 have trained on the oval in great anticipation for the annual Beach Touch Football Gala Day. After two postponed dates, students were extremely excited to participate.
Congratulations to the students for their hard work and enthusiasm demonstrated on the day!
On Wednesday 20 November, Year 9 travelled to Wanda Beach, Cronulla to attend one-day Surf School. The surf camp allowed students to develop knowledge and skills related to surf safety, surf education, surfboard riding and bodyboarding. Aquatics is a part of the NSW PDHPE Syllabus for Stage 5.
The weather was excellent, and the students should be commended on their excellent behaviour and participation on the day. Regardless of their previous surfing experience, all students were able to learn new skills or develop their existing knowledge. Overall, an excellent day in the sunshine enjoying some waves!

The NSW Public Schools’ Schools Spectacular is a renowned annual event celebrating the incredible talent of students across New South Wales. The Schools Spectacular highlights the excellence and diversity of NSW public schools, fostering inclusivity, collaboration, and artistic development. It provides students with an iconic opportunity to perform on a grand stage, build confidence, and share their passion for the arts with a wide audience. NHSPA students are valued participants in the Schools Spectacular as seen in this archival article dated November 8, 1995.
Spotted among these former NHSPA students, pictured in a white blazer, is Australian singer songwriter and television personality Nathan Foley, better known for his time in the Australian children’s musical group Hi-5. Foley is well known for his time performing in Schools Spectacular as a soloist and can attribute his success to the valuable experiences performing on the Schools Spectacular stage. Foley stated in an interview that he enrolled at NHSPA to be around other people who were also in the arts. He praises Newtown for its individuality and acceptance of creative people. We can all agree that NHSPA is a place that welcomes and champions individuality and nurtures all students’ creative endeavors.
We can see our very talented and hard working NHSPA students performing in this year’s Schools Spectacular from 29-30 November 2024 at Qudos Bank Arena. Grab your tickets!

Safe Internet
PARENT ADVICE for Cyber Bullying from the eSafetyCommissioner
Use parental controls: Parental controls are software tools that allow you to monitor and limit what your child sees and does online.
They can be set up to do things like:
Block your child from accessing specific websites, apps or functions (like using a device’s camera, or the ability to buy things).
Filter different kinds of content — such as ‘adult’ or sexual content, content that may promote self-harm, eating disorders, violence, drugs, gambling, racism and terrorism.
Allow you to monitor your child’s use of connected devices, with reports on the sites they visit and the apps they use, how often and for how long.
Set time limits, blocking access after a set time.
If a device or program is shared by multiple members of your family, you should be able change the tool settings to reflect each user’s age and skills.
For further parental support please see the below links.

We invite you to contribute towards our St George’s Hall Trust Fund.
St George’s Hall and The Studio Theatre are used by all students for year meetings, presentation assemblies, performances and various incursion workshops.
Through the St George’s Hall Trust Fund, the school is able to enhance the Performing and Visual Arts within the school by improving the physical spaces to create 'state of the art' venues, provide scholarships to students, technical equipment, musical instruments, and workshops with industry professionals.
The school is currently looking to install air-conditioning in St George’s Hall and replacing the seating in the Studio Theatre.
We suggest a donation of $200 per year per family. Any amount donated to the St George’s Hall Trust fund is tax deductible.
