Welcome to Term 3!
I hope everyone had a great break and that the first two weeks of Term have started really well for you. Students are back looking happy, refreshed and keen to learn.
Trial HSC examinations commenced for Year 12 students on the first day of term. They have one week yet to go and we wish Year 12 the very best in this final exam week. Many students will also be submitting Major Works or completing performance-based examinations for NESA in the coming weeks. It is an important and very busy term for Year 12.
Monday 22 July was our School Development Day. Teachers collaborated in wellbeing workshops and collectively presented on quality teaching practices based on the What Works Best research. The workshopping and presentations were outstanding and testament to the high expectations learning culture at NHSPA. Such sharing of expertise and teaching strategies builds the capacity of us all to improve student outcomes. Thank you to all the teachers who delivered and led workshops and to Deputy Principal Nilaufer Rajwar for her leadership of the day.
We welcome our new canteen operators, Anthony Catering, who started with us this term. Feedback from both students and staff is very positive.
There is a lot of excitement as well as effort going into the Legally Blonde auditions. Well done to all the students who are auditioning and thank you to Head Teacher Music Ynping Mak, Olivia Callaghan (Dance) and Zoe Van Munster (Drama) for their leadership of the auditions running after school every day.
Band Night last Thursday night – an evening of student led rock and jazz band performances – was outstanding. A variety of music from highly talented musicians and singers made for a very enjoyable evening. As always, I am impressed by our students’ talent. It is also a delight to witness the joy and love of performance evident in our students. Well done to all who performed, the Year 11 VET students who managed the evening, and to Head Teacher Music Ynping Mak, Amber Johnson (Music) and Zoe Van Munster (Drama) for coordinating the rehearsals and performance.
Yesterday during staff meeting time, Hannah Hindmarsh, Head Teacher Teaching and Learning, led staff on professional dialogue around the newly released High Potential and Gifted Education research on the Creative Domain. This research is extremely relevant to teaching and learning at NHSPA where creativity is recognised as essential to all learning.
Also yesterday at the Telstra Theatre on George Street, the 2024 Schools Spectacular was officially launched. Two of our students performed: Julien Daher and Micah June (Year 9). It was a privilege to watch them perform in this context. Schools Spectacular is the highest profile performing arts event for the NSW Department of Education. This year's theme is All 4 One and is about looking forward, supporting one another, and is centred around unity, connection and working as one for a common goal.
As I mentioned during assembly last week, I encourage all students to challenge themselves at NHSPA. Teachers will motivate and inspire students – this is what quality teaching is about – but I remind students to consciously challenge themselves and set goals to achieve their personal best.
This morning we celebrated the Year 11 High Achievers for Semester 1 with a morning tea in the staff common room. Well done to these students who have worked very hard and achieved excellent results in their Half-Yearly school reports.
Finally, I am kindly reminding parents and carers that if they happen to have the personal email of a member of staff, that they restrict emails to work hours only. Scheduling emails and ‘delay send’ options are helpful in this regard and support our teachers.
Term 3 will be another excellent term of learning at NHSPA!
Best wishes,
Dr Susan Green
School Development Day - Monday 22 July 2024
School Development Day Term 3 was, as always, a collegial and collaborative day for NHSPA staff
Student Attendance
The evidence is clear that consistent attendance is the essential first step for your child to have a positive experience at school. Every day matters for your child’s learning. In recent years we’ve seen too many students miss a day of school here and there. Missing school for students means missing assignments, time with friends, an important Maths lesson or getting picked for a sports team. With days missed, years are lost.
Students are required to attend school every day, whether it’s the first or last day of the term, Mondays, Fridays or days dedicated to sports carnivals, school excursions and incursions. Help us make sure your child is achieving their best and stays ahead in their learning with regular school attendance. The more time your child attends school, the greater their opportunity to learn and improve their wellbeing. Together, let’s build positive attendance habits for a lifetime.
If your child is absent from school, please let us know why as soon as possible, even if it is just a few minutes at the start or end of the school day. Of course, there will be times when your child is unable to be at school (like when they are unwell). Medical appointments should take place outside school hours where possible and family holidays should be taken in term breaks.
If your child is feeling anxious about coming to school and you need support, please reach out to your child’s Deputy Principal, Year Adviser or myself (Deputy Principal, Karl Pico) directly. Our staff are here to work with you and your child to help them attend school each and every day. There are also helpful resources for parents and carers on the Every Day Matters website.
Thank you again for working with our teachers and support staff to make sure your child is at school, on time, every day. We all want to see our students learn, grow and belong in our equitable and outstanding education system.

Congratulations to our Senior Debating Team!
Josephine Bradfield, Lola Merewether, Scarlett Saunders, Emma Walker, Karys Werstak and Rafael Gonzalez
In the midst of the Trial HSC, amongst the mental overload and the exhaustion of exams, our Senior Debating Team defeated North Sydney Girls High School in Round 7 of the Premier's Debating Challenge.
They have made it through to the final four teams in the state and are one debate away from reaching the Final.
With passion and determination, these students have navigated their way through an extremely busy schedule this year and should be exceedingly proud of their efforts.

FRENCH CREPE LESSON
Kaeto Yoshikawa and Keenan Oldis
Maya Harriman-Khan and Maya Lama
In Week 10 last term, the Year 10 French class enjoyed learning about how to make French crêpes, but more importantly, how to eat them!
To whet their appetites, the class watched a children's video in French (https://youtu.be/7iLQ8RY-Y9I) which explained and demonstrated the recipe and equipment required to make crêpes. Then came the fun part - eating them.
Students were then able to try some homemade crêpes prepared by Mr Anthony with some popular French toppings including Nutella, lemon juice and sugar, and Bonne Maman strawberry jam.

DDANCE
YEAR 8 DANCE DAY
We are thrilled to share the success of our recent Year 8 Dance Day! The event was a fantastic experience for our students, who engaged in a series of dance workshops throughout the day.
Led by industry professionals, students participated in classes in Classical Ballet, Musical Theatre and Jazz designed to enhance both Technique and Performance Quality. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to discover their interests whilst providing them with a taste of the Dance electives NHSPA offers in Years 9 and 10.
We hope all students enjoyed the day and felt inspired by the experience!
A new initiative for 2024, Band Night, featured students in ensembles in a rock/pop setting, featuring self-devised bands of peers and House Bands to support featured vocalists.
Thank you to Ms Van Munster, Mr Turner, Ms Mak and Ms Johnson for curating, organising, producing and supporting this event.
Thank you to Year 11 Entertainments students who provided sound, lighting, tech and logistical responsibility for the evening: Miller Sargeant, George Holahan-Cantwell, and Grace Hardy.

Congratulations!
to our students who have been selected to perform as part of the Intersection Festival run by Australian Theatre for Young People!
This is a prestigious opportunity to represent the school alongside performers from across the state.
The students selected are: Diksha Chowdhary, Harvey Matthews, Jasmine Dula, Piper Hill, Gaia Droppa, Alice Lonsdale, Lily Hodson and James Richardson (Year 9 Extension).
Unfortunately, due to a scheduling clash, only Lily and James are able to perform in the festival, and so it is with gratitude that we announce that Zoe Richardson, Sylvie Daniels, Alexandra Stavropoulos, Zoe Clarke, Gemma Walsh-Wood, Phoebe Crowe and Evie Ricketson from Year 10 Extension have accepted the challenge at short notice and will be performing in the Festival.
James and Lily will perform on Tuesday 6 August, and the Year 10s on Thursday 8 August. Tickets are available here: Boxoffice Atyp - Intersection Festival
Year 10 Extension recently attended an excursion to the Sydney Opera House to see The River That Ran Uphill, a theatre piece about the impact of 2015's Cyclone Pam on communities in Vanuatu presented by Slingsby Theatre Company.
This beautiful work gave students an opportunity to experience Slingsby's innovative style of visual storytelling using objects, shadow, lighting and miniature, and to learn about the impacts of climate change on Vanuatu.
On Monday 29 July, the NHSPA Drama Department hosted 100 Drama teachers from all across the state to unpack and spend a day learning about the new Drama syllabus.
This was a great day for our staff to spend time connecting with Drama teachers within the community and creating partnerships with Drama practitioners from a range of areas.
Thanks to NESA and to DRAMA NSW who created the event.
YEAR 12
Our Year 12 students are in the final stages of their major projects in Textiles, Design, and Technology, with submissions due mid-August.

The school provides an opportunity for students to have instrumental and/or vocal lessons at NHSPA with professional tutors. The lessons take place during the school day on a rotational basis so that students do not miss the same class each week. Most lessons are half an hour in duration once a week over each school term.
This opportunity is available to all students enrolled in Newtown High School of the Performing Arts.
Students are reminded that they need to swipe in and out of every lesson.
You can sign up for the program and access lessons using this link:

We invite you to contribute towards our St George’s Hall Trust Fund.
St George’s Hall and The Studio Theatre are used by all students for year meetings, presentation assemblies, performances and various incursion workshops.
Through the St George’s Hall Trust Fund, the school is able to enhance the Performing and Visual Arts within the school by improving the physical spaces to create 'state of the art' venues, provide scholarships to students, technical equipment, musical instruments, and workshops with industry professionals.
The school is currently looking to install air-conditioning in St George’s Hall and replacing the seating in the Studio Theatre.
We suggest a donation of $200 per year per family. Any amount donated to the St George’s Hall Trust fund is tax deductible.
Donations can be made online through your School Bytes Parent Portal.

PARENT ADVICE for Cyber Bullying from the eSafetyCommissioner
Use parental controls: Parental controls are software tools that allow you to monitor and limit what your child sees and does online.
They can be set up to do things like:
Block your child from accessing specific websites, apps or functions (like using a device’s camera, or the ability to buy things).
Filter different kinds of content — such as ‘adult’ or sexual content, content that may promote self-harm, eating disorders, violence, drugs, gambling, racism and terrorism.
Allow you to monitor your child’s use of connected devices, with reports on the sites they visit and the apps they use, how often and for how long.
Set time limits, blocking access after a set time.
If a device or program is shared by multiple members of your family, you should be able change the tool settings to reflect each user’s age and skills.
