Dear Parents and Carers,
Today is the official last day of school for our 179 Year 12 students. The Year 12 Graduation Ceremony is at the Seymour Centre where we will celebrate the learning and the incredible achievements of Year 12 2024.
HSC exams commence week 1 Term 4. We wish Year 12 a productive two weeks as they focus now on their final exams and maintain careful study timetables to maximise their results and achieve their personal bests.
It has been an absolute privilege to be Principal in the final year of school for Year 12 2024. I would like to thank our dedicated and expert teachers and staff, in particular the Year 12 Deputy Principal Ms Nilaufer Rajwar, and the Year 12 Year Advisors, Mr Alain Lavrut and Ms Amanda di Camillo.
The final whole school assembly last Thursday was a special farewell assembly to Year 12 with an outstanding performance by Year 9 students (Samson, Peeraya, Alex, Julien, and Ari), and a long, winding arch of hands for Year 12 to walk through.
The NHSPA Jazz Band, directed by Jason Isaac, performed to a large and appreciative crowd at the Manly Jazz Festival on Sunday. A perfect sunny day for jazz at the beach featuring so many talented Year 12 Musicians: Flynn, Rhys, Francis, Jay, Jack and Sebastian.
Congratulations to the students performing in the State Dance Festival at The Seymour Centre last week. I was fortunate to see the Friday night performance and the senior dancers with the beautiful choreography by Head Teacher Dance, Ms Alison McKellar.
The Spring Prom on Tuesday night was yet another evening when the exceptional talents of our students were on show. Thank you to the Music Faculty, the Technical Crew, and all the many staff involved to enable this event. St George's Hall was packed with parents, carers, students, and staff sitting on picnic rugs and cushions entranced by the performances.
I will take this opportunity, as we head into the holidays, to remind parents and carers to be extra conscious of their child’s use of social media during the break and to consider ways it can be managed to support their wellbeing. Please see the eSafetyCommissioner tips for parents: https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents
NHSPA has a high expectations learning culture. Supporting students to thrive academically and emotionally is our priority. There are consequences for any unacceptable behaviour. This is made very clear to students on assemblies, in year meetings, and through targeted workshops and programs, such as last week’s anti-racism workshops with all Year 8. The NHSPA Student Behaviour Management Support Policy can be accessed via the school website.
https://newtown-h.schools.nsw.gov.au/supporting-our-students/student-health-and-safety.html
In this final Bulletin for the term, I would like to say a massive THANK YOU to our outgoing Year 12 School Prefects: Jaide, Sebastian, Jacob, Freya, Marianne, Freddie, Bailey, Tobias, Talahn, Meri and Lara, and our School Captains, Josephine and Amy. The 2024 Prefects have been outstanding role models and I thank them for their collaborative leadership initiatives this past year.
Have a safe and relaxing holiday.
Best wishes,
Dr Susan Green
Anti-racism Workshop
Year 8 Wellbeing
Over the final two weeks of term three, our Year 8 cohort are taking part in an anti-racism workshop presented by Addison Road Community Centre. The workshop is equipping our students with knowledge and language to identify the varied forms that racism takes in society and empowering them to challenge it in both big and small ways.
The learning has been thoughtful and relevant for our students, and as a result they have been highly engaged and invested. Students are encouraged to talk to their family and friends about what they have learned in these workshops, so let's keep the conversation going!
Safe Internet
PARENT ADVICE for Cyber Bullying from the eSafetyCommissioner
Use parental controls: Parental controls are software tools that allow you to monitor and limit what your child sees and does online.
They can be set up to do things like:
Block your child from accessing specific websites, apps or functions (like using a device’s camera, or the ability to buy things).
Filter different kinds of content — such as ‘adult’ or sexual content, content that may promote self-harm, eating disorders, violence, drugs, gambling, racism and terrorism.
Allow you to monitor your child’s use of connected devices, with reports on the sites they visit and the apps they use, how often and for how long.
Set time limits, blocking access after a set time.
If a device or program is shared by multiple members of your family, you should be able change the tool settings to reflect each user’s age and skills.
For further parental support please see the below links.

Student Emails and Social Network Restrictions
IMPORTANT!
From Day 1 Term 4, students will no longer be able to use their school email address (@education.nsw.gov.au) to access social media, gaming, instant messaging and similar platforms. This means they will also not be able to retrive password-recovery emails and the like from these platforms.
The NSW Department of Education is making an important change to help keep our students safe online, reduce the risk of cyber threats and make sure your student email accounts are used for their intended educational purposes only.
What’s happening?
Starting Day 1 Term 4, you won’t be able to use your student email address to sign up for, or recover access to any social media, gaming, instant messaging or similar accounts.
What you need to do!
If you have signed up for a social media, gaming, instant messaging or similar account using your student email address, please change to a personal email address on each platform by Sunday 13 October to make sure you don't lose access to the account. Here’s how:
Log in to each account.
Go to the account settings and update your email address to a personal one. Add a mobile number too, if you haven’t already.
Why this is happening
The department is making this change to ensure all student accounts are being used for their educational purposes, and to help protect you from risks online. Using your personal email address for these platforms instead of your student email address reduces the chances of someone gaining access to information in your school account.
NSW Health recommends students and staff stay home and see a doctor
if suffering from whooping cough symptoms
NSW Health advises that whooping cough (sometimes called pertussis) is circulating at high levels in NSW and affecting school aged children in particular, with incidence highest among children aged 10 to 14 years old, followed by 5 to 9 year olds.
Whooping cough is a serious respiratory illness. It is highly contagious and spreads easily between kids and families. It can be life threatening for babies, especially newborns.
Whooping cough usually begins like a cold, with early symptoms including a cough, mild fever, tiredness and blocked or runny nose. The cough will usually get much worse and may progress to severe coughing fits that can last for many weeks. Intense and rapid coughing fits can be followed by gasping and a ‘whoop’ sound.
Whooping cough is spread in the air as droplets, usually by coughing or sneezing. Vaccination provides the best protection from whooping cough.
Contact: Incident Report and Support Hotline
Call: 1800 811 523
To help stop the spread of whooping cough, NSW Health recommends:
Children who are sick (including those with cold and flu symptoms) stay home and away from other children until their symptoms have resolved or as directed by their doctor.
If a child is diagnosed with whooping cough, they should stay home for 5 days after they start antibiotics, or 21 days after their cough starts.
Parents seek treatment and testing advice through their GP when their child is has symptoms of whooping cough. Parents can also call healthdirect day or night on 1800 022 222 for advice.
Parents can help protect their children by making sure all their children are vaccinated on time.
It is very important for pregnant women to be vaccinated during each pregnancy to protect the new baby in its first few months of life when it is too young to be protected by vaccination.
If parents are concerned and need health advice, they can call healthdirect on 1800 022 222. Healthdirect is free and available 24 hours a day, 7 days. A registered nurse will answer the call and provide health advice and connect families to the right care for their child.
As we come to the end of Term 3, and with it our journey at NHSPA, the prefects would like to reflect on the incredible experiences we’ve shared and express our gratitude to both peers and teachers. Over the past six years, it has truly been an honour to learn and collaborate with such talented fellow students and receive invaluable guidance from our dedicated teachers.
This term has been especially significant, featuring the challenge of the trial examinations, Visual Art, Textiles and DT exhibitions and Dance, Drama and Music HSC practical exams. While difficult, they were also rewarding, allowing us to showcase our hard work and creativity.
Over the term, we have also held both the Soiree and Spring Prom concerts which featured works from HSC music students performing to teachers, family and peers which was an amazing way to appreciate the work that goes into an HSC music program. It was truly moving to witness these last performances for Year 12 students.
Year 12 students studying extremely hard for their upcoming HSC exams
We wish them all the best !
Amidst sticking to our study schedules for the upcoming HSC exams, the Year 12 cohort has been celebrating the last week of school with dress-up days and events such as student vs teacher soccer, netball, and hockey matches.
On behalf of the cohort, the prefects would like to extend our best wishes to the rest of the school for their time at NHSPA. We are incredibly grateful for your support and kindness - especially during our final assembly. We will sincerely miss walking through Corelli’s gates each morning to learn alongside you all. NHSPA has been more than just a school—it has been a place where we’ve grown, explored our passions, and formed lifelong friendships. The lessons we’ve learned here will stay with us long after we leave. Together we have made these past six years truly unforgettable, and for that we thank you.
Love from the Prefects xoxo

Year 7 Gala Day
On Thursday 19 September, Year 7 participated in the annual Bligh Zone Gala Day. For most of them this was their first opportunity to represent NHSPA and compete against other local schools. This day is designed to promote participation in physical activity and is a great way for students to develop sporting and teamwork skills while making some new friends and cementing some existing ones. Students participated very well and respresented NHSPA admirably.
Year 7 teams were coached on the day by selected Years 9 and 10 students, who did an excellent job at facilitating teamwork, encouraging the students and making some crucial coaching decisions.

Both Year 12 PDHPE classes have undergone a series of Olympic-style Challenges this week, to take some time away from the books and show off their skills. This was a nice way to finish what has been 2 years of hardwork and tremendous improvements, both by individuals and the groups as a whole. Both classes are to be commended for how they have bonded as a cohort as the 2 year period progressed, often making an effort to help each other with the course content. They are encouraged to continue this supportive teamwork approach as they prepare for their upcoming HSC.
We wish all of these students the best - study hard!

For Term 3, our focus for staff learning has been High Potential and Gifted Education, with a focus on the Creative Domain. Our school not only recognises this as one of our school values but actively continues to refine our professional skills in this area. This term, teachers explored the research, processes and practices that can facilitate the creative development of our students.
This culminated at our recent Week 9 staff meeting where all teachers shared what they are doing with their classes.
Thank you to all the teachers for expertly sharing and the dedication they show every day to provide opportunities for our students to become more aware, confident and intentional in using their ability to think creatively. In the images above you can see NHSPA teachers sharing best practice and some of the creative products of their lessons. In Geography, Mr Rigby's class made dioramas and in English, Ms Coveny shared the creative process of developing a personal Zines with Year 9. In week 2 of this Term, teachers shared their responses to What is Creativity? see below for some of the responses.

St George’s Hall and The Studio Theatre are used by all students for year meetings, presentation assemblies, performances and various incursion workshops.
Through the St George’s Hall Trust Fund, the school is able to enhance the Performing and Visual Arts within the school by improving the physical spaces to create 'state of the art' venues, provide scholarships to students, technical equipment, musical instruments, and workshops with industry professionals.
The school is currently looking to install air-conditioning in St George’s Hall and replacing the seating in the Studio Theatre.
We suggest a donation of $200 per year per family. Any amount donated to the St George’s Hall Trust fund is tax deductible.
