We are almost at the end of our current mid-year showcase season with many students performing in two or more Showcase nights in Dance classwork, HSC student choreographed performances, Music ensembles and Drama pieces. It is always an exciting time for students, directors, conductors and specialist tutors to present their work to their peers and the school community. The showcase season is made possible through the professional and ongoing support of staff and the dedication and enthusiasm of our students. We would like to recognise the commitment and professionalism of our performing arts staff who continue to work with passion to ensure our students have such performance opportunities.
The technical crew, under the leadership of Ben Turner, also works behind the scenes with meticulous attention to detail to maintain the highest of production standards. We would also like to recognise and thank our P&C who offer continued support during the showcase season and would like to acknowledge the work of the TAS faculty and the Year 9 Showcase Hospitality class who cater for some of the performance evenings during showcase.
IN CLASS
Meanwhile, the students are continuing to pursue excellence in their classrooms, with tasks such as a Design and Technology Investigation in Year 9, Year 12 Depth Studies in Chemistry and Year 7 Multimodal Narratives for English. Students have sat examinations, presented portfolios, and submitted edited films.
Students are encouraged to be familiar with the assessment schedules for all their tasks and start to plan their busy weeks to achieve success in all work.
UNIFORM
The students of Newtown High School are proud of the reputation of the school as a school of excellence in the Performing Arts and also the regular curriculum any high school in NSW. We encourage students to express that pride by wearing the school uniform with the same standards of excellence. The weather is bracing, but there are plenty of warm options available at the uniform shop.
Uniform is a safety issue, a social issue around equity, around image, and uniform is often linked with behaviour.

REPORTS AND GOAL SETTING in STAGE 5
Year 9 and Year 10 will undertake Goal setting/Report interviews this term. Year 10 will meet their teachers for a short interview to talk about their grades, areas of strength and areas for growth on Wednesday 25 June. Year 9 will do the same on Wednesday 2 July. Both cohorts have the opportunity to reflect upon their work during first semester and aim for improvement for their end of year report. Teachers discuss realistic goals and how to aim towards constant improvement. It is a positive way for teachers and students to engage at the end of the term.
Vaccinations will be held for Year 10 on Thursday 26 June. Year 10 are offered a free meningococcal ACWY vaccine. Please click on the link below to register if you have not already done so.

If you do not have a medicare card, internet access or are unable to to complete the online consent form, please ask for a paper consent form before 26 June.
ATTENDANCE
It is important that students attend school on time every day to ensure their continuation of learning. Regular attendance builds confidence in content and establishes the important connections students make in every class. Please find more detail on attendance below.
The evidence is clear that consistent attendance is the essential first step for your child to have a positive experience at school. Every day matters for your child’s learning. In recent years we’ve seen too many students miss a day of school here and there. Missing school for students means missing assignments, time with friends, an important Maths lesson or getting picked for a sports team. With days missed, years are lost.
Students are required to attend school every day, whether it’s the first or last day of the term, Mondays, Fridays or days dedicated to sports carnivals, school excursions and incursions. Help us make sure your child is achieving their best and stays ahead in their learning with regular school attendance. The more time your child attends school, the greater their opportunity to learn, make new friends and improve their wellbeing. Together, let’s build positive attendance habits for a lifetime.
If your child is absent from school, please let us know why as soon as possible, even if it is just a few minutes at the start or end of the school day. Of course, there will be times when your child is unable to be at school (like when they are unwell). Medical appointments should take place outside school hours where possible and family holidays should be taken in term breaks.
If your child is feeling anxious about coming to school and you need support, please reach out to your child’s Deputy Principal, Year Adviser or myself directly. Our staff are here to work with you and your child to help them attend school each and every day. There are also helpful resources for parents and carers on the Every Day Matters website.
Thank you again for working with our teachers and support staff to make sure your child is at school, on time, every day. We all want to see our students learn, grow and belong in our equitable and outstanding education system.
TAX DEDUCTABLE DONATIONS
Newtown High School of the Performing Arts has been very fortunate since its establishment in 1990 to enjoy the extra support of parents, carers, our alumni, and the wider community.
We are delighted to announce the establishment of the Newtown High School of the Performing Arts School Library Fund.
Together with the St George’s Hall Trust Fund, which was established in 1993, there is now a second tax deductible way our community can contribute to the school.
Tax deductible donations to these funds greatly contribute to the provision of the best educational opportunities and facilities for our students and community.
St George’s Hall Trust Fund
$70,000 has been contributed to air-conditioning in St George’s Hall and two classrooms within H Block.
This Trust Fund provides extra funding each year to the Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts faculties. This extra funding assists with student scholarships, awards and master class practitioners to enable extension opportunities and to develop the talent of creative and performing arts students. In 2024 the funding enabled the following:
Dance – Paul Knobloch, from the Australian Ballet, to teach and choreograph with Year 10, 11 & 12 Dancers.
Drama – A Series of Public Apologies collaboration with award winning director, Warwick Doddrell
Music – purchase of resources for ensembles and repairs to music equipment
Visual Arts – Scott Owen workshop, HSC Material Worlds – Contemporary Asian Art presentation, installing of a hanging system in the St George’s Gallery and the purchase of camera equipment.
Library Fund
The Library Fund is a new tax-deductible fund established this year. Library Fund donations will be used for the following:
new books
computer/software and hardware
library furniture such as bookshelves, booth seating, library displays and archival preservation
Donations made to the School Library Fund or the St George’s Hall Trust Fund are fully tax-deductible as charitable contributions under the ATO provisions.
Tax deductible donations can be made using our online payment portal or by visiting the school office during school hours (8.30am – 3.00pm). For assistance making payments online, please visit: How to make a payment online – School Bytes
For further information on donating funds please contact, Mr Adam Oliver, Business Manager on 9519 1544 or email the school at newtown-h.school@det.nsw.edu.au
Air conditioning in St George’s Hall has been a goal since the school opened in 1990. We thought we were getting closer… We were hoping it might be ready well before the next Musical. Unfortunately, it will not. We were informed this week by School Infrastructure NSW that the design and supporting documentation will still be completed and provided to the school once finalised, however, the current Quantity Surveyor’s report indicates that the project is now expected to exceed the $2 million mark.
Below is a summary of the key factors contributing to this cost increase:
Heritage Restrictions – These have ruled out more cost-effective options (That would not suit the hall). The current design approach is the result of a collaborative decision between School Infrastructure Assets, Heritage, and the school.
Compliance Requirements – Additional considerations have been required to meet updated building codes and standards.
Structural Requirements – Modifications are needed within the ceiling space to support the weight and installation of the air conditioning system.
Technical Constraints – The system is limited to a ceiling-mounted solution, as underfloor installation is not viable and tiered seating prevents the use of wall-mounted solutions.
Electrical Works – Minor upgrades are necessary to support the proposed mechanical system.
Access Requirements – Custom-built stair access to the ceiling space is required to ensure safe construction and long-term maintenance.
Fit-for-Purpose Design – The system must meet acoustic standards appropriate for a performance space, while still effectively cooling the high-volume hall.
For suggestions of where to next, please email the NHSPA P&C.
At Newtown High School of the Performing Arts, we are proud of our vibrant and diverse community.
Our parents, carers and alumni play an essential role in shaping our culture of excellence, creativity, and equity —and we are always inspired by the legacy and contributions of our extended NHSPA family.
In recognising the richness of our school’s history and the talent of our students, we are reaching out to deepen our community connections and explore new ways you might support and extend the learning experiences of our students.
We invite you to complete a short survey to let us know how you may be able to contribute your time, skills or industry expertise.
Your involvement can help open doors and create opportunities for our students as they prepare for their future beyond school.

YEAR 8 EXCURSION TO ANNIE
Year 8 Drama Students travelled to the Capitol Theatre this week to see fellow Year 8 NHSPA students Chloe Dell-vedove and Matilda Teiotu perform as part of the cast of ANNIE. Year 7 student Ava Palfreyman is also in the alternate cast who we unfortunately did not get to see but we were thrilled to have 3 NHSPA students representing our PA faculties in the production.
We were very proud of the girls' performances and it was such a valuable experience for our students to see theatre on this scale. Mr Kavanagh and Ms Arazny managed to survive the day as the 50 Drama students that were with them were beyond excited the entire way there and back.

SHOWCASE LIVESTREAM
In a first for Showcase, the Vivo Showcase concert platform was livestreamed to the Studio Theatre holding space so that the full concert experience was understood by students, directors, teachers and crews in real time. Less running to call ensembles to the stage was a great benefit.
Students are to be congratulated for their collaborative and peer-minded spirit in their back of house conduct, excellent and spirited performances and shockingly efficient gear bump out after Vivo Concert 2. The whole cycle of Music Showcase Term 2 is now complete, front to end. Congratulations!

Notice regarding The Arts Unit Initiatives and Schools Spectacular
Initiatives offered via the Arts Unit are developed to provide performing arts opportunities to students of NSW Public Education schools statewide.
At Newtown High School of the Performing Arts, a specialist, selective entry performing arts high school in Dance, Music and Drama, we offer numerous enrichment and extension opportunities in the Performing Arts to develop the talents of our gifted students.
For a student at NHSPA to be eligible to apply for an Arts Unit initiative, they must receive the school's endorsement. This will usually be given by a Head Teacher and confirmed by the Principal.
Parents looking at opportunities for their students through the Arts Unit should get in touch with the relevant Faculty Head Teacher for guidance in this matter before seeking endorsement from NHSPA and submitting an application for Arts Unit programs.
Parents and students should be familiar with NHSPA's Dance, Drama and Music general co-curricular policies. Familiarity with these policies in tandem with consulting the faculty Head Teachers will ensure the best contextual understanding regarding opportunities for our talented students.

Students who attended this 3 day camp engaged in artmaking across multiple forms, inspired by the stunning views over the Shoalhaven river.
The outstanding work produced by our students received an highly positive reception by all who viewed it.
Congratulations to all who participated!
Hey Newtown!
Over the last few weeks, we have had some incredible performances from both Music and Dance showcases across all year groups. A big thank you to all of the Prefects and Senior Students who helped MC and usher these events. Senior dance students have also been lucky enough to receive industry workshops from guests from Sydney Dance Company, VCA, and more.
Next Thursday, we will be celebrating our multicultural day, which will be commemorated with a special assembly, and at lunchtime with our food stalls (courtesy of the SEED team). We will also have some incredible performers helping us celebrate, so keep an eye out!
Coming up, we have our Drama Showcase, which will feature performances from companies spanning all year groups. Good luck to all the performers participating in these shows, and make sure you grab your tickets from our school website to support your friends and peers.
We hope you have a wonderful week and stay warm!

TAS
Year 7 Agriculture
Year 7 Agriculture students have been working in the school garden to plant and maintain a variety of vegetables and herbs.
For the Food Sustainability project they have been tasked with creating a sandwich recipe that utilises one ingredient taken from our garden.
Year 9 Showcase Hospitality
Year 9 Showcase Hospitality students cooked, plated and then served their food creations to attendees of the Music Showcase nights early this term.
Carefully prepared dishes such as White Chocolate Panna Cotta with a Raspberry Coulis, Teriyaki Sushi 'cups', mini Sausage rolls, Spinach and Cheese triangles and our famous Chocolate slice were a hit amongst guests.
In the Year 11 Design and Technology Toy Project, students followed a design brief to design and produce a children’s toy for a specific age group.
They researched the chosen age group’s cognitive and physical development to ensure their toy was both engaging and suitable. This research informed decisions around safety, functionality, and play value.
Each student documented their progress in a detailed design folio, showcasing their understanding of the design process. The folio included research, sketches, development, and construction stages.
The project encouraged creativity, problem-solving, and hands-on skills, resulting in thoughtful, age-appropriate toys designed to support child development through play.
The arrival of our new laser cutter is an exciting addition to the school’s TAS Faculty, offering a significant advantage for students undertaking HSC major design projects in both Textiles and Design and Technology.
This state-of-the-art tool allows for precise, professional-quality cutting and engraving across a variety of materials, enabling students to bring complex design ideas to life with greater accuracy and efficiency.
It will enhance creativity, save time in the construction phase, and supports high-quality project outcomes. With this new technology, students gain valuable experience using industry-standard equipment, better preparing them for future studies and careers in design, engineering, and manufacturing fields.
PDHPE & SPORT
Sydney East Cross Country
On Wednesday 11 June, 21 eager NHSPA runners travelled to Miranda Park to represent the school and Bligh Zone at the Sydney East Regional Cross Country Championships. Students gave it their absolute all on the day and represented Newtown admirably with both their running and positivity.
Special mention to Riley Cullen (Year 12, Girls 18 years, 6th place) and Pelayo Manalac (Year 7, Boys 12 years, 9th place) who were triumphant in progressing to State which will take place on July 22nd.
Best of luck to Riley and Pelayo from all of NHSPA!
Year 9 & 10 Physical Activity and
Sport Studies (PASS) Wheelchair Basketball Incursion
In week 7, students in Year 9 and 10 doing the elective subject PASS got to experience playing wheelchair basketball, provided by Wheelchair Sports NSW. NHSPA thanks Stephan Rochecouste who came to discuss sporting participation options and experiences for individuals with disability. The opportunity allowed students to try something new, and give them an idea of what it is like to be in a wheelchair.
Year 8 - Respectful Relationships
Students are currently studying the unit 'Respectful Relationships' discovering how to be positive friends, supportive peers and upstanders to negative behaviour. Students were asked to respond to the following question: "Explain the importance of healthy relationships in our lives."
Some fabulous and thoughtful responses are below, in addition to posters students where required to create to promote positive friendships and prevent bullying.
Out of the Archive - Dr Trish Kennedy
Our Petersham roots
1989 saw the last production of the Petersham Girls’ High School magazine - or the “Final Eagle” as the ultimate edition was titled. In the course of future articles, I will be dipping into the memories captured in that final publication. Ms P. Owen, who arrived at the school at the height of the swinging 60s, loved the school enough to make it her workplace until 1989. While the era of hats and gloves has long faded, the affection of staff for colleagues and students has certainly persisted at NHSPA.
Caring for the collection
NHSPA wishes to give thanks to the many students who drop by to cover books because they love to help out, as well as all of the Duke of Ed students who enjoy fulfilling the volunteering component of their award in the library. The work of these students helps to enhance the appeal and durability of library resources.
Evaluating the Collection
While surveys have their definite place, one of the most fruitful ways of evaluating the appeal of the 2025 junior fiction collection has been to sit back and observe student engagement with the books.
Ironically, valuable insights have also been provided by the students who pour into the library to check out the pile of culled books. Many of these students will be contributing to book selection into the future and we thank them in advance!
Reconfiguring the physical space of the library
In the course of semester 1, we have opened up a gateway into the fiction collection, a decision which has greatly increased desirable traffic. During the coming semester, we intend to organise most of the fiction collection into genres, a strategy with proven success in increasing perusal of available books.
To support learners in developing effective study habits the school will run an after-school study centre during term times on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday afternoons from 3:25pm-5:00pm in the school Library.
This is open to all students, providing a quiet environment in which focussed study could take place.
Whilst attendance every week is not compulsory, should your child wish to use this facility, it is recommended that they be regular in their attendance for effective learning to occur.
The study centre will be supervised by a staff member between the times above to assist learners with organisation, planning, and developing successful study habits should they so wish.
This is an excellent opportunity for students to form small study teams to work together to improve their understanding of concepts and spur each other on to achieve a personal best in their subjects.
Expectations for attendance are as follows:
Students
respect the rights of other learners and so maintain a quiet learning environment.
desire to improve their performance in subjects.
use this time productively.
be regular in attendance.
The centre has been shown to be an effective way for improving students' results, confidence, and organisation in an enjoyable, relaxed environment.

The Role of the Anti-Racism Contact Officer (ARCO)
in Our School
At Newtown High School of the Performing Arts, we are dedicated to ensuring an inclusive, respectful, and equitable environment where every student feels safe and valued. A critical component of this commitment is the role of our Anti-Racism Contact Officer (ARCO).
Who is the ARCO?
The ARCO at Newtown High School of the Performing Arts is Mr. Aflal Sahabdeen. The ARCO is a specially trained staff member who supports students, staff, and families in understanding, addressing, and preventing racism within our school community. Their work ensures our school remains a welcoming space for all, regardless of background.
What does the ARCO do?
Provides Support: Offers guidance to those experiencing or witnessing racism and ensures concerns are handled appropriately.
Promotes Education & Awareness: Leads initiatives, workshops, and discussions to foster respect, understanding, and inclusion.
Implements Policies: Enforces the NSW Department of Education’s anti-racism policies, ensuring all complaints are managed fairly and effectively.
Monitors & Reports: Tracks trends and collaborates with school leadership to develop strategies that prevent racism and promote inclusivity.
Engages with the Community: Works with parents, local groups, and external organisations to extend anti-racism efforts beyond the classroom.
Why Does This Role Matter?
Racism has no place in our school or society. The ARCO helps create a positive, supportive learning environment where every student can thrive. By promoting awareness, understanding, and respect, we strengthen our school’s values and commitment to equity.
How Can You Get Support?
If you experience or witness racism or would like to learn more about anti-racism initiatives, our ARCO, Mr. Aflal Sahabdeen, is here to help. You can reach out confidentially for support, guidance, and resources.
For further information about the ARCO role and anti-racism education, visit the NSW Department of Education website:
https://education.nsw.gov.au/teaching-and-learning/multicultural-education/anti-racism-education
Together, let’s continue building a school community that celebrates diversity and stands against racism.

PARENT ADVICE for Cyber Bullying from the eSafetyCommissioner
Use parental controls: Parental controls are software tools that allow you to monitor and limit what your child sees and does online.
They can be set up to do things like:
Block your child from accessing specific websites, apps or functions (like using a device’s camera, or the ability to buy things).
Filter different kinds of content — such as ‘adult’ or sexual content, content that may promote self-harm, eating disorders, violence, drugs, gambling, racism and terrorism.
Allow you to monitor your child’s use of connected devices, with reports on the sites they visit and the apps they use, how often and for how long.
Set time limits, blocking access after a set time.
If a device or program is shared by multiple members of your family, you should be able change the tool settings to reflect each user’s age and skills.

Newtown High School of the Performing Arts (NHSPA) aims to develop skilled and creative learners who value the performing and creative arts as well as academic excellence. The school creates an environment where all students are encouraged to set high expectations and are supported to achieve their full potential.
RATIONALE AND PURPOSE
This procedure guides student use of digital devices at our school including requirements and expectations regarding the safe and appropriate use of mobile phones by students.
Our school acknowledges the educational value of digital devices in supporting and enhancing educational outcomes and student wellbeing. We also recognise they may cause harm if used inappropriately and that we need to support our students to use them in safe, responsible, and respectful ways.
OUR SCHOOL’S APPROACH
Digital devices, such as but not limited to, mobile phones, laptops, headphones, earphones/air pods, smart watches and other personal music or communication devices, should not negatively impact teaching and learning.
