Term 2 is our reporting term. Year 12 will be the first cohort to receive their Semester 1 reports, which will be issued on Wednesday 20 May. Students will be allocated an interview time with their Curriculum Adviser, during which their reports will be distributed, and goals and strategies for improvement will be discussed for implementation over the final two terms. It is important that students take time to reflect on the feedback provided by their teachers and actively apply this advice as they prepare for their next round of assessment tasks. A reminder that the school offers a mentor program and an after-school study centre to support students in achieving their best.
The Year 11 Half-Yearly assessment block earlier this term ran smoothly, with students approaching their first formal assessment period with maturity and responsibility. The illness/misadventure process was followed appropriately, with assessments rescheduled as required. Year 11 students will receive their half-yearly reports during a scheduled meeting with their Curriculum Advisers on Friday 19 June.
By the end of the term all students and parents will have access to their Semester 1 reports through the Sentral Portal.
Year 11 students have been given senior privileges. These include permission to leave school grounds during lunch time, arrive before 10am during days when they have no timetable lesson during period 1 and leave at lunchtime if they have no timetabled lesson during period 4. In order to maintain these privileges, Year 11 students must ensure that they follow the School’s Code of Conduct at all times. This includes wearing the school uniform, attending classes on time, and conducting themselves appropriately within and outside the school.
The final Parent–Teacher interviews were held yesterday for Year 7, with sessions conducted in person. This was highly successful, providing parents with the opportunity to meet teachers and discuss their child’s progress and transition to high school. This was one of many opportunities for parents and students to receive feedback on their progress.
We apologise to any parents who were unable to secure bookings with some of their child’s teachers. While we endeavour to accommodate as many families as possible, some teachers, particularly those with multiple classes, fill their interview schedules very quickly. Parents are always welcome to contact teachers directly via phone or email to discuss their child’s progress.
It is that time of year again when our students’ talents are showcased in our concert series. The Semester 1 Showcase season begins this month on Tuesday 19 May. The program promises to be outstanding, offering a comprehensive display of what our students and their teachers have been working on throughout this semester as part of the co-curricular program.
We encourage members of our community to attend the Showcase performances over the coming weeks, particularly those who are new to the school. The Showcase concerts are a true reflection of the opportunities available to our students and consistently provide an enjoyable evening. Further details can be found in the Bulletin, including links to TryBooking for ticket purchases. This information is also available on the school website, and all performances will be numbered seating.
In Week 3, our Year 7 parents were invited to a special welcome event. This provided an opportunity for parents to meet key members of staff, connect with other new families, and gain insight into what makes our school such a unique and dynamic place of learning and creativity. The event highlighted collaboration between faculties, students and teachers, showcasing what is possible in our distinctive learning environment. Parents enjoyed a range of impressive performances and refreshments, adding to the celebratory atmosphere. It was a pleasure to welcome our new families into the school community.
Year 10 students have undertaken the HSC Minimum Standards tests in reading, writing and numeracy. These online assessments are designed to ensure students demonstrate the foundational literacy and numeracy skills required to successfully complete the Higher School Certificate (HSC). Students have multiple opportunities to meet the standard across Years 10 to 12, and those who require additional support will be provided with further opportunities and guidance to achieve these essential benchmarks.
This term, our school will participate in the NSW Public Schools Surveys for students, parents/carers and staff, providing an opportunity to share feedback about school life and help us identify what is working well and where improvements can be made. Students will complete a confidential online survey during school hours (approximately 10–15 minutes), with participation voluntary; if you do not wish for your child to participate, please complete the NPSS Opt-out Form.
Further information is available at https://education.nsw.gov.au/npss. Parents and carers are invited to complete an anonymous survey about their experience of the school, including communication, wellbeing and support for learning, which also takes around 10–15 minutes and can be accessed via
https://surveyme.education.nsw.gov.au/sc/3_ZgJVLFuC9N_-A_4yrCCw2
Staff will similarly be invited to complete an anonymous 10–15 minute survey on school leadership, professional learning and workplace wellbeing. Your participation is valued and supports ongoing school improvement.
Term 2 marks the beginning of the cooler autumn and winter months. It is important that students are prepared for the change in weather and attend school in full and correct uniform. The school maintains high uniform standards, and it is an expectation that all students wear the appropriate items, including school jumpers, jackets and coats, as well as black, fully enclosed leather shoes in line with Occupational Health and Safety requirements. If there is a genuine reason for your child to be out of uniform, please provide a written note explaining the circumstances and have it submitted to the office at 8.30am, a uniform pass will be issued and recorded on our system. Students who attend school in incorrect uniform will be required to exchange the item for the appropriate uniform and wear it for the remainder of the school day.
Finally, a reminder for all members of the school community that the After School Study Centre is open on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons in the Library from 3.10 till 5pm. This is a very useful resource that further supports students in their preparation and revision for assessment tasks and examinations.
It is vital that school holds valid details for all students should we need to contact parents. If you have recently changed your address or any other contact details, please complete the change of details form and return to the front office.
PERMISSION TO PUBLISH
Please complete and return the form below to the front office if you need to advise the school of any changes in the 'Permission to Publish' consent of your child.

Year 7 Welcome Evening
Our Year 7 Welcome Evening was held last week and we have had fantastic feedback from the parents, carers and students who attended and participated.
The evening formed part of an important assessment event for students undertaking the Certificate III in Live Production and Technical Services. The evening saw our Entertainment students take full responsibility for the design, planning and delivery of a promenade-style performance experience for Year 7 students and their families. The event provided a unique opportunity for students to apply their learning in a real-world context, working collaboratively to manage staging, performance, technical production and audience flow across multiple spaces within the school.
A sincere thank you is extended to the many staff, students and community members who generously contributed their time and expertise to support the event. Their involvement plays a vital role in ensuring students can successfully complete their qualification requirements while gaining authentic industry experience.
The night featured performances from Year 8 Ballet, Year 10 Extension Drama, Music students from Years 8 - 10 in WOMP, The New Orleans Ensemble and the Live Band as well as catering provided by the TAS department.
TEACHING & LEARNING
Gifted Awareness Week
Did you know that Gifted Awareness Week (GAW) is celebrated in Week 5 this term, from May 18 - 24?
This week raises awareness of the identification, support, learning and wellbeing needs of high potential and gifted children.
At NHSPA, we strive to ensure all students can access opportunities to develop their talents and reach their full potential. We recognise that giftedness is dynamic; it develops over time and may emerge in different ways across a student's time at the school.
Identifying and Extending Potential
At NHSPA we draw upon a wide range of data to identify students who demonstrate high potential across all KLAs, including teacher observation, parent and peer nomination, formal and informal assessments, NAPLAN data, interviews and reports.
What Support Looks Like at NHSPA
Curriculum differentiation across all KLAs to extend students beyond standard expectations
Referral pathways for students identified as requiring additional extension or enrichment
Access to state and national extension programs and competitions
Coordination between Learning and Support and Head Teachers to ensure gifted students are appropriately challenged
Free Parent Support Webinars
Elevate Education delivers high-impact workshops to our students that help to develop their study skills, motivation, and exam preparation.
Over the next term, parents are invited to attend Elevate's free webinar series, where you can help support your child at home by reinforcing the skills they're learning at school.

MUSIC
From The Greek Herald, 4 May 2026. Read more here: "Dimitris Basis and Newtown Performing Arts close final chapter"

Notice regarding The Arts Unit Initiatives and Schools Spectacular
Initiatives offered via the Arts Unit are developed to provide performing arts opportunities to students of NSW Public Education schools statewide.
At Newtown High School of the Performing Arts, a specialist, selective entry performing arts high school in Dance, Music and Drama, we offer numerous enrichment and extension opportunities in the Performing Arts to develop the talents of our gifted students.
For a student at NHSPA to be eligible to apply for an Arts Unit initiative, they must receive the school's endorsement. This will usually be given by a Head Teacher and confirmed by the Principal.
Parents looking at opportunities for their students through the Arts Unit should get in touch with the relevant Faculty Head Teacher for guidance in this matter before seeking endorsement from NHSPA and submitting an application for Arts Unit programs.
Parents and students should be familiar with NHSPA's Dance, Drama and Music general co-curricular policies. Familiarity with these policies in tandem with consulting the faculty Head Teachers will ensure the best contextual understanding regarding opportunities for our talented students.

Please speak to the relevant Performing Arts Head Teacher if you have any questions.
MATHEMATICS
Maths Talent Quest
This term, Newtown High School of the Performing Arts will be running its first-ever Maths Talent Quest!
The National Mathematics Talent Quest (MTQ) is a nationwide competition that invites students to undertake real-world, mathematically based investigations, either independently or as part of a class. Through participation, students learn to think and work like mathematicians — collaboratively, creatively, and in ways that can make a meaningful impact.
Projects are due by the end of the term. Winners of the Newtown round will go on to represent the school at the state level.
For more information, please see Ms Carter in the maths staffroom, or attend a Math Modeling Club session on Monday lunchtime in C7 for support and guidance.
For inspiration, you can explore this list of project ideas:

Well done to everyone who participated. Keep an eye on Google Classroom for the next Brainy Bites: Maths Edition challenge.
New quizzes are posted fortnightly, and we encourage all students in Years 7–10 to get involved. Can you outsmart the shark?
Brainy Bites: Maths Edition 1
Congratulations to all students in Years 7–10 who have taken part in our Brainy Bites: Maths Edition fortnightly challenge. It has been fantastic to see so many students getting involved, testing their problem-solving skills and taking on each new challenge with enthusiasm.
Each fortnight, students are invited to complete a short maths challenge designed to stretch their thinking, encourage persistence and build confidence with mathematical reasoning. We have been impressed by the number of students willing to have a go, try different strategies and submit thoughtful responses.
A special congratulations to our winners for this round:
Winners

To wrap up our Year 8 Ratios and Rates unit, students swapped calculators for creativity in an Origami Scale Challenge. Armed with a single A3 sheet, they measured and cut five different-sized squares, calculated scale factors and then faced the ultimate folding test!
While some cranes took flight, others transformed their squares into chatter boxes, swans, and even jumping frogs. There was plenty of laughter and teamwork as we turned maths into art, seeing ratios and scale in action (and sometimes, in action-packed frog jumps!).
Check out the photos to see our colourful origami collection—and maybe spot a frog in mid-leap!
VISUAL ARTS
Visual Arts has had a busy term so far, with all year groups completing assessment tasks, with many incredible artworks being submitted to us for marking.
As a result The St George's Gallery on King Street is currently hosting our annual "Places and Spaces" Exhibition. This exhibition showcases the first unit of work for our Year 11 students, a drawing project featuring a place or space that is of significance to them. They are also able to submit a series of photographs, a soundscape or a film to accompany the drawing, if digital media is a passion they wish to showcase.
This year our Year 11 Photography, Video and Digital Imaging students have been exploring the same theme in their work, using either analogue darkroom techniques, or digital still photography to create a series of work, as Year 8 "PPP" (Photo, Print, Paint), so these works have joined the exhibition as well.
The official opening of the exhibition where parents and carers are invited to attend to view their child's work is Tuesday evening (19 May) from 4-6 pm in St George's Gallery, on King Street.
We look forward to showcasing some individual works by our students in Bulletins to come!

Year 7 Welcome to Newtown Evening
"The Yellow Brick Road"
Year 10 and Year 11 Food Technology students recently spent a full day in the kitchen preparing and catering for the Year 7 Welcome to Newtown evening, themed Yellow Brick Road.
Students worked collaboratively to prepare an array of sweet and savoury foods, including decorated cupcakes, lemon slices, brownies and biscuits.
Following a busy day of preparation, students stayed back into the evening to cater for the event, serving families and helping create a welcoming atmosphere for our newest students and their families.
The students are to be congratulated on their outstanding efforts, dedication to supporting the school community and the high level of culinary skill they demonstrated throughout the event.
Year 12 Textiles and Design
Year 12 Textiles and Design students have been busy working on their Major Textile Projects. Some students have utilised the school's laser cutter to create unique decorative features on their garments. The below images show how the laser cutter has been used to cut circles on a polyester organza material. The student has then burnt the edges to create petal-like shapes and secured to the fabric with crystal beads.

U16s Boys AFL - Top 8 in Sydney East!
Congratulations to the NHSPA Under 16 boys AFL team, who competed in the Sydney East quarter finals on Monday 11 May. Due to the luck of the draw and a few forfeits, this was the boys first game of the year. The team came up against a strong Sydney Secondary College combined team, consisting of students from all 3 of their campuses (Balmain, Leichhardt & Blackwattle). The boys unfortunately came away with a loss - however were led admirably and passionately by Harper Dales (Year 10). Stand out players on the day were Harper Dales, Will Donaldson, Elliot Rivers and Jack Jobbins. It was a great display of teamwork and effort by all students involved.
U15s Girls Netball
To begin their CHS Knockout campaign, our U15's girls netball teams had friendly games against Alexandria Park Community School.
With more than 50 students coming to trial, both an A and B team were established. As a pre-season practise game, both teams competed against Alexandria Park Community School. NHSPA teams both came away with signficant wins and are excited to compete against Kirrawee High School next week.
This was a great opportunity for the girls to train in a game environment and work on their teamwork and competitions ahead of their knockout games next week. All girls competed hard and represented Newtown admirably.
NHSPA House & Vice Captains
Congratulations to our wonderful Year 11 & 12 students who received their certificate and badges at the senior assembly this week.
We thank them for all their efforts in the three major carnivals that have occurred - Swimming, Athletics & Cross Country and look forward to them collaborating to further increase school sport participation and spirit in the coming terms.
NHSPA Athletics Carnival
On a very overcast drizzly day, NHSPA students ventured to Sydney Olympic Park Warm Up Track for the annual athletics carnival. Newtown spirit was buzzing on the day, with no students allowing the weather to dim their enthusiasm and positivity.
Students participated in the following events:
Track events; including 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m
Field events; including discus, javelin, high jump and long jump

ALUMNI NEWS: Harley Mann & Harrie Hogan
Huge congratulations to Alumni Harley Mann, whose Company, Na Djinang Circus, recently toured its work "Of the Land on Which We Meet" (Directed by Harley) to Sydney's Riverside Theatre. Na Djinang Circus is a Melbourne based contemporary circus company working with diverse young artists to share unique insight through circus and movement. Founded by Wakka Wakka man Harley Mann, an Alumni of Newtown High School Of The Performing Arts and a graduate of the National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA), Na Djinang Circus is now recognised as one of Australia’s most exciting contemporary circus companies and a pioneer in the First Nations Circus sector.
Harley has worked with some of the world’s top contemporary circus companies, including Circa, Circus Oz, Casus, and Les Sept Doigts (The Seven Fingers).
The show's lighting was designed by NHSPA Alumni Harrie Hogan. In her career Harrie has been nominated for three Green Room Awards for her lighting design work and her designs have been featured in state festivals and toured overseas. Harrie is a keen collaborator and proud to be counted amongst the growing number of women in her field.
Na Djinang Circus aims to develop work that utilises the next generation’s social and political attitudes and tell stories that challenge our own perceived ideas about contemporary Australian society. Their work explores fundamental human characteristics from an indigenous perspective, using the body to demonstrate complex human experiences of trust, connection, vulnerability, and joy.
"Of the Land on Which We Meet" asks us to reflect on the past, embrace the present, and look towards a more united future. This mesmerising performance follows the journey of three contemporary Australian circus artists with distinct relationships with Country; an Indigenous Australian, a descendant of migrants, and a descendant of colonial settlers. It searches for a way to address the possible lack of connection contemporary Australians have with the spirituality of the land and hopes to re-discover the connection we once had.

Congratulations!
Aspiring leader Lily Hodson (Year 11) was invited to NSW State Parliament for the day as a special guest of Member for Newtown Jenny Leong. Lily had an amazing time attending question time and shadowing Jenny. The Speaker of the House even formally acknowledged Lily as a guest!
Thank you to Jenny Leong and her research officer Patricia Arcilla for facilitating this opportunity for Lily.
Jemima-Rose French and Willow Seager (Year 10) were selected from applicants Australia-wide for Australian Theatre for Young People's Industry Crash Course which took place this week. Across one intensive week, participants rotated through workshops and sessions led by ATYP’s artistic, technical and producing teams, meeting directors, actors, designers, producers, stage managers, technicians and marketing specialists who shape contemporary Australian theatre. This year’s program also included exclusive behind-the-scenes access to live productions, including Saplings at the Sydney Opera House where the rest of Year 10 and the Drama staff caught up with them!

To support learners in developing effective study habits the school runs an after-school study centre during term times on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday afternoons from 3:25pm-5:00pm in the school Library.
This is open to all students, providing a quiet environment in which focussed study could take place.
Whilst attendance every week is not compulsory, should your child wish to use this facility, it is recommended that they be regular in their attendance for effective learning to occur.
The study centre will be supervised by a staff member between the times above to assist learners with organisation, planning, and developing successful study habits should they so wish.
This is an excellent opportunity for students to form small study teams to work together to improve their understanding of concepts and spur each other on to achieve a personal best in their subjects.
Expectations for attendance are as follows:
Students
respect the rights of other learners and so maintain a quiet learning environment.
desire to improve their performance in subjects.
use this time productively.
be regular in attendance.
The centre has been shown to be an effective way for improving students' results, confidence, and organisation in an enjoyable, relaxed environment.

TAX DEDUCTIBLE DONATIONS
Newtown High School of the Performing Arts has been very fortunate since its establishment in 1990 to enjoy the extra support of parents, carers, our alumni, and the wider community.
We are delighted to announce the establishment of the Newtown High School of the Performing Arts School Library Fund.
Together with the St George’s Hall Trust Fund, which was established in 1993, there is now a second tax deductible way our community can contribute to the school.
Tax deductible donations to these funds greatly contribute to the provision of the best educational opportunities and facilities for our students and community.
TAX DEDUCTIBLE DONATIONS
St George’s Hall Trust Fund Performing Arts Donation
This donation is to support the school’s performing and visual arts endeavours. We suggest a donation of $200 per year per family or any amount which is tax deductible through our St George’s Hall Trust Fund. Each year donations provide funding for technical equipment, musical instruments and professional industry workshops for students which enrich our programs and extend students’ opportunities. Donation(s) may be made on the School Bytes statement or Parent Portal.
Library Fund Donation
The Library Fund is a tax-deductible fund established in 2025. Library Fund donations will be used for the following:
• new books
• computer/software and hardware
• library furniture such as bookshelves, booth seating, library displays and archival preservation
Donations made to the St George’s Hall Trust Fund or the school Library Fund are fully tax-deductible as charitable contributions under the ATO provisions.
OTHER DONATIONS
School Donation
If you would like to make a general donation to the school, please include the amount you wish to donate at the designated section via the School Bytes statement which will be emailed to you in the beginning of Term 1. Please note, this donation is not tax deductible. Donation(s) may be made on the School Bytes statement or Parent Portal.
NHSPA P&C Donation
The P&C relies on voluntary fundraising donations as their primary means of fundraising. We suggest a donation of $50.00 per year per family. Funds collected are allocated to fund items or projects in consultation with the school. P&C members support the school to ensure our children have the very best educational opportunities possible and our aim, when allocating funds, is to have whole of school impact.
The P&C works with the school to identify and implement specific funding for a variety of initiatives. One such initiative was the purchase of mega decking, consisting of stage legs and braces, which were used for the 2023 production of the Musical ‘Sweeney Todd’ and ‘Legally Blonde’ in 2025. In 2025 a laser cutter for the TAS faculty was partially funded through the P&C. Other items purchased in the past include the new school bell, PA security system and large fan in the gym.
The Role of the Anti-Racism Contact Officer (ARCO)
in Our School
At Newtown High School of the Performing Arts, we are dedicated to ensuring an inclusive, respectful, and equitable environment where every student feels safe and valued. A critical component of this commitment is the role of our Anti-Racism Contact Officer (ARCO).
Who is the ARCO?
We have three Anti-Racism Contact Officers at our school: Mr J Emsley, Ms Y Mak, and Mr V Zitser. They are specially trained staff members who support students, staff, and families in understanding, addressing, and preventing racism within our school community. Their work ensures our school remains a welcoming space for all, regardless of background.
What does the ARCO do?
Provides Support: Offers guidance to those experiencing or witnessing racism and ensures concerns are handled appropriately.
Promotes Education & Awareness: Leads initiatives, workshops, and discussions to foster respect, understanding, and inclusion.
Implements Policies: Enforces the NSW Department of Education’s anti-racism policies, ensuring all complaints are managed fairly and effectively.
Monitors & Reports: Tracks trends and collaborates with school leadership to develop strategies that prevent racism and promote inclusivity.
Engages with the Community: Works with parents, local groups, and external organisations to extend anti-racism efforts beyond the classroom.
Why Does This Role Matter?
Racism has no place in our school or society. The ARCO helps create a positive, supportive learning environment where every student can thrive. By promoting awareness, understanding, and respect, we strengthen our school’s values and commitment to equity.
How Can You Get Support?
If you experience or witness racism or would like to learn more about anti-racism initiatives, our Anti-Racism Contact Officers, Mr J Emsley, Ms Y Mak, and Mr V Zitser, are here to help. You can reach out to these staff confidentially for support, guidance, and resources.
For further information about the ARCO role and anti-racism education, visit the NSW Department of Education website:
https://education.nsw.gov.au/teaching-and-learning/multicultural-education/anti-racism-education
Together, let’s continue building a school community that celebrates diversity and stands against racism.

SAFE INTERNET
PARENT ADVICE for Cyber Bullying from the eSafetyCommissioner
Use parental controls: Parental controls are software tools that allow you to monitor and limit what your child sees and does online.
They can be set up to do things like:
Block your child from accessing specific websites, apps or functions (like using a device’s camera, or the ability to buy things).
Filter different kinds of content — such as ‘adult’ or sexual content, content that may promote self-harm, eating disorders, violence, drugs, gambling, racism and terrorism.
Allow you to monitor your child’s use of connected devices, with reports on the sites they visit and the apps they use, how often and for how long.
Set time limits, blocking access after a set time.
If a device or program is shared by multiple members of your family, you should be able change the tool settings to reflect each user’s age and skills.
