The skills NHSPA students build daily 'behind the scenes' are what produce these beautiful moments...
Dear Parents and Carers of Newtown High School of the Performing Arts
With a teaching area in the performing arts and currently managing students' 2026 curriculum choices, I felt it timely to share some of Newtown High School of the Performing Arts' philosophies behind our arts vision and programs.
NHSPA offers an inclusive Arts Education to our students. A range of national and international studies have demonstrated the capacity of arts education to provide highly inclusive environments for a diverse range of students, and opportunities for academic engagement, social engagement and meaningful learning. Collective benefits include achievements in reading, language and mathematics development, increased higher order thinking skills and capacities, increased motivation to learn, and improvements in effective social behaviours. An Arts education increases learners' confidence and motivation, thereby improving school attendance rates, academic outcomes and the well-being and life skills of children and young people (Bowen, E.H, Kisida, B. 2023).
In Year 7 all students at NHSPA are introduced to the fundamentals of Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts. Our students go on to choose from a range of elective subjects ranging across the arts and other Key Learning Areas in Year 8. In Year 9, we provide a unique and engaging experience for all our students with our SHOWCASE ELECTIVE program.
We are proud to foster a well rounded Arts Education for our students and encourage you to continue to support the artistic curiosities in your children. Please take a look at WHAT'S ON in the arts in Sydney at the moment and if you can - take your family along!

Year 9 Camp
Year 9 headed off for an exciting three-day camp at Lake Burrendong filled with fun and adventure. The 4.5 hour bus ride out there involved a breakfast stop at Maccas. Students enjoyed activities such as camping under the stars, cooking dinner on the campfire, mountain biking, grass skiing, archery, archery tag, initiatives, as well as games in the recreational hall.
This camp is a wonderful opportunity for students to showcase their leadership and teamwork skills and while creating lasting memories with their cohort.

Year 10 Production of Animal Farm
Performances at the Studio Theatre on 22, 23, and 24 October 2025 - numbered seating
Tickets are on sale from 18 August 2025 via the link or same link on the school's website
When the animals in the farmyard rebel against their tyrannical farmer and take control of the farm, they hope to create a world where they can be equal, happier and free. But as power shifts and a new leader emerges, they soon face the age-old question: what does it really mean to be equal?
Exploring loss of identity, the seductive allure of privilege, and the corrupting nature of political power, George Orwell's Animal Farm is a classic story of rebellion and treachery, and a timely reminder of the importance of resistance.
Tatty Hennessy's adaptation received its professional premiere in 2025, directed by Amy Leach, co-produced by Leeds Playhouse and Stratford East in association with Nottingham Playhouse, and performed at all three theatres. It was commissioned and first performed by the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain in 2021.
Directed by award-winning director Warwick Doddrell, this NHSPA production marks the Australian Debut of the play.

Notice regarding The Arts Unit Initiatives and Schools Spectacular
Initiatives offered via the Arts Unit are developed to provide performing arts opportunities to students of NSW Public Education schools statewide.
At Newtown High School of the Performing Arts, a specialist, selective entry performing arts high school in Dance, Music and Drama, we offer numerous enrichment and extension opportunities in the Performing Arts to develop the talents of our gifted students.
For a student at NHSPA to be eligible to apply for an Arts Unit initiative, they must receive the school's endorsement. This will usually be given by a Head Teacher and confirmed by the Principal.
Parents looking at opportunities for their students through the Arts Unit should get in touch with the relevant Faculty Head Teacher for guidance in this matter before seeking endorsement from NHSPA and submitting an application for Arts Unit programs.
Parents and students should be familiar with NHSPA's Dance, Drama and Music general co-curricular policies. Familiarity with these policies in tandem with consulting the faculty Head Teachers will ensure the best contextual understanding regarding opportunities for our talented students.
Links to NHSPA Co-Curricular Policies:
Please speak to the relevant Performing Arts Head Teacher if you have any questions.
We were very excited to welcome parents and the community into our school to view the work of this year's Year 12 students.
The Body of Work is 50% of their Visual Arts Exam mark, where students develop a work over the span of the year, exploring a theme of their choosing in one of 12 expressive forms. We had students create work in 10 of the 12 forms this year, showing the diversity of practice students at Newtown High School of the Performing Arts are capable of.
Thank you to the students, their parents and the Visual Arts teachers (Ms. Mez O'Donnell, Ms. Catherine Hannan and Ms. Lisa Allison) for working together to achieve these incredible results. Thank you also to Ms. Francesca Heinz and Ms. Daryle Newman for hanging the show, and Mr. Benajamin Turner for his assistance in facilitating St. George's Hall as the Venue.
We look forward to showcasing the work of the students in more detail in the future, after the marking process has taken place.

SCIENCE
NHSPA celebrated Science Week in Week 4, which culminated with what has become a regular feature of Science Week for the school - liquid nitrogen ice cream.
While Mr Preston took charge of pouring the nitrogen from the enormous dewar, Mr Bradley and Mr Sahabdeen shared the mixing and stirring to produce quite a spectacle, as well as a delicious and silky-smooth vanilla treat. Thanks also to our spruiker and crowd control, Ms Spirovska, Mr McKaig and Ms Morley for taking charge of the sherbert table, and for our lab assistant, Ms Martin for all her hard work setting up and keeping the supplies flowing.
Students also enjoyed other events during Science Week, including employing their problem-solving and collaboration skills to solve the ever-popular escape rooms. Students raced each other to decipher a series of puzzles to be the first to escape. Congratulations to all the winning groups!
YEAR 8
We were also finally able to award prizes for the amazing work Year 8 produced for the Machine Expo. Canteen vouchers were presented to the groups that won the popular vote for the best machine and the best advertising campaign.
Year 8 has now also completed and presented their models of a chosen specialised cell. We have once again been impressed by their amazing creativity and high quality of both the models and presentations.
YEAR 11 CHEMISTRY
Year 11 Chemistry students made the trek to UNSW to experience the hi-tech atmosphere of the university laboratory.
All decked out in labcoats, safety goggles and gloves, they felt very professional performing a variety of experiments and got a taste of what life at uni and beyond could look like.

We thoroughly appreciate the relationship we have developed with Newtown Public School and are proud of NHSPA students for their caring and compassionate attitude towards their coaching groups.
Gala Day - Year 8
Wednesday 27 August was a hugely successful day celebrating the power sport, with Newtown playing against schools such as Tempe High School, Sydney Secondary College, Strathfield Girls High School & Marrickville High School. Wednesday the 27th was a hugely successful day celebrating sport, with Newtown competing in friendlies against several schools in soccer, netball and Oz tag.
Despite the weather not being ideal, all teams showed relentless enthusiasm, energy and team spirit throughout, with the Oz Tag girls even coordinating and performing a pre-match dance before each of their games.
None of this would have been possible without Miss Campbell - organising a fantastic day out for our young people!
A special thanks to our excellent Year 10 helpers who ensured the day ran smoothly and provided great coaching and refereeing for the girls.

LIBRARY - Dr Trish Kennedy
Write a Book in a Day !
an initiative of NHSPA Book Club
On Friday 15 August, eight talented writers and artists from the NHSPA Book Club gathered in the library to meet the challenge of creating a book of their own in just five hours. Write a Book in a Day is an initiative which raises money for research into kids’ cancer while also honing the creativity of participants who bond over this richly collaborative experience. In the words of Lulu Pester, “It was a super great experience with a fun and exciting atmosphere.”
Indeed, it was an absolute joy to witness the animation and focused intensity of these Years 7 and 8 students as they conceived, wrote and illustrated a story which matched the following parameters:
Here is an excerpt from their emotionally gripping tale which will be launched in the library at lunchtime on Monday 1 September.
“I think I'll call you Bailey”, he announced in a wholesome, affectionate tone, deciding finally to adopt the dog and save her from her cruel life at this shelter.
He went back to the old man that ran this miserable place and asked to adopt the beautiful creature that he had just met. With all of his blind delusion he hoped and prayed that the owner would say yes, and for a time he actually believed himself, before he comprehended the words that came out of the old man’s mouth, words that made his heart instantly sink to the floor.
“This dog’s to be sent overseas to Australia to be in the Sydney Flying Animals Company”, were the driveling, slurred words that came out of the man’s mouth. “If you’re planning to steal the miserable creatures that make me money, then get out of this building”.
Doubtless, when alumni, others will be launching the various creative products of skilled and inspiring students.

WELLBEING
National Bullying No Way Week 2025
This week NHSPA supported National Bullying No Way Week.
This year's theme is Be Bold. Be Kind. Speak Up !
It takes courage to spark change. Bullying is everyone’s responsibility. It takes a community to be brave and address bullying behaviours, within and beyond the school gate.
Students can be bold, kind and speak up to support others being bullied. Trusted adults are there to support children and young people as they learn how to be kind to each other and report bullying.
This Bullying No Way Week, we hav been asking students, schools, families and communities to be bold and say something, be kind and support someone, and be proud to speak up against bullying.
This week and every week, make sure that you
be bold, be kind and speak up !

To support learners in developing effective study habits the school will run an after-school study centre during term times on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday afternoons from 3:25pm-5:00pm in the school Library.
This is open to all students, providing a quiet environment in which focussed study could take place.
Whilst attendance every week is not compulsory, should your child wish to use this facility, it is recommended that they be regular in their attendance for effective learning to occur.
The study centre will be supervised by a staff member between the times above to assist learners with organisation, planning, and developing successful study habits should they so wish.
This is an excellent opportunity for students to form small study teams to work together to improve their understanding of concepts and spur each other on to achieve a personal best in their subjects.
Expectations for attendance are as follows:
Students
respect the rights of other learners and so maintain a quiet learning environment.
desire to improve their performance in subjects.
use this time productively.
be regular in attendance.
The centre has been shown to be an effective way for improving students' results, confidence, and organisation in an enjoyable, relaxed environment.

The Role of the Anti-Racism Contact Officer (ARCO)
in Our School
At Newtown High School of the Performing Arts, we are dedicated to ensuring an inclusive, respectful, and equitable environment where every student feels safe and valued. A critical component of this commitment is the role of our Anti-Racism Contact Officer (ARCO).
Who is the ARCO?
The ARCO at Newtown High School of the Performing Arts is Mr. Aflal Sahabdeen. The ARCO is a specially trained staff member who supports students, staff, and families in understanding, addressing, and preventing racism within our school community. Their work ensures our school remains a welcoming space for all, regardless of background.
What does the ARCO do?
Provides Support: Offers guidance to those experiencing or witnessing racism and ensures concerns are handled appropriately.
Promotes Education & Awareness: Leads initiatives, workshops, and discussions to foster respect, understanding, and inclusion.
Implements Policies: Enforces the NSW Department of Education’s anti-racism policies, ensuring all complaints are managed fairly and effectively.
Monitors & Reports: Tracks trends and collaborates with school leadership to develop strategies that prevent racism and promote inclusivity.
Engages with the Community: Works with parents, local groups, and external organisations to extend anti-racism efforts beyond the classroom.
Why Does This Role Matter?
Racism has no place in our school or society. The ARCO helps create a positive, supportive learning environment where every student can thrive. By promoting awareness, understanding, and respect, we strengthen our school’s values and commitment to equity.
How Can You Get Support?
If you experience or witness racism or would like to learn more about anti-racism initiatives, our ARCO, Mr. Aflal Sahabdeen, is here to help. You can reach out confidentially for support, guidance, and resources.
For further information about the ARCO role and anti-racism education, visit the NSW Department of Education website:
https://education.nsw.gov.au/teaching-and-learning/multicultural-education/anti-racism-education
Together, let’s continue building a school community that celebrates diversity and stands against racism.

PARENT ADVICE for Cyber Bullying from the eSafetyCommissioner
Use parental controls: Parental controls are software tools that allow you to monitor and limit what your child sees and does online.
They can be set up to do things like:
Block your child from accessing specific websites, apps or functions (like using a device’s camera, or the ability to buy things).
Filter different kinds of content — such as ‘adult’ or sexual content, content that may promote self-harm, eating disorders, violence, drugs, gambling, racism and terrorism.
Allow you to monitor your child’s use of connected devices, with reports on the sites they visit and the apps they use, how often and for how long.
Set time limits, blocking access after a set time.
If a device or program is shared by multiple members of your family, you should be able change the tool settings to reflect each user’s age and skills.
