Dear Parents/Carers and Students
Newtown High School of the Performing Arts is very proud of the inclusive and vibrant culture we uphold with our values of Excellence, Creativity and Equity at the forefront. Our 2024 Prefects organised the annual International Women's Day Breakfast followed by panel discussion centered around the significance of diversity and empowerment across all sectors of society. Year 12 students were invited to attend the panel discussion and a huge 'thank you' must go to everyone involved in organising such an important and affirming event.
Heading towards the end of Term 1, students are now busy learning new curriculum, co-curricular performance works, and meeting new peers in clubs and teams. During this busy time we would like to ask parents' help in reminding students to represent our school with pride. This includes wearing the correct school uniform, attending school and classes on time, and upholding respectful relationships with peers and staff. Here are some reminders about our uniform policy:
UNIFORM
Full school uniform is to be worn to and from school as well as during school hours with consideration to the fact that students are representing our school and upholding our school values of Excellence, Creativity and Equity. The NHSPA school uniform promotes equality and safety amongst our community, strengthens high expectations, supports the student code of conduct, and aligns with our school values. Students should be proud of our school and wear our uniform with pride.
A reminder that black enclosed leather shoes are required for students who have practical lessons timetabled in subjects such as Science, Design & Technology, Food Technology, Set Design and Construction, Master Chef, Master Designer, Visual Arts, Photo Paint & Print or Ceramics for work health and safety reasons. This applies on Tuesday sport days also.
The NHSPA uniform policy has been updated and is available to view:
ASSESSMENT
Assessment Booklets and Calendars for all year groups are accessible via the school website. These have also been posted to your child's year group google classroom. Whilst these are final, they are subject to change. Any changes will be communicated in writing directly to students and amended on google classroom with at least 2 weeks' prior notice to the due date. Any concerns regarding assessment should be referred to the class teacher.
YEAR 7 PEER SUPPORT CAMP
I have had the pleasure of joining Year 7 on the Peer Support Camp at The Tops Conference Centre this week where our newest NHSPA cohort were led through a variety of challenging activities such as go-carting, the giant swing, survivor challenge and archery. Year 10 Peer Support Leaders displayed encouragement and kindness and a strong sense of initiative to engage and develop their younger peers in all activities. Thank you to Amanda Di Camillo, our Peer Support Coordinator, who so ably coordinated the planning and delivery of the camp.
Camp photos will be included in the next edition of the NHSPA Bulletin.
International Women's Day
It was a wonderful way to celebrate International Women's Day at NHSPA on 8 March by hosting a breakfast and panel for our students and teachers.
The Prefect Team worked hard to make this day possible, from organising panelists to flipping pancakes on the day. The Year 12 cohort, as well as some Year 11 students, were fortunate to engage in conversation with our wonderful guests: Jenny Leong MP, Kylie Washington, Dr Christy Newman, and Dr Jessica Brooks, as we explored the theme 'Inspire Inclusion'.
It was a brilliant opportunity to hear from people representing a diverse range of industries, as they provided insight into their personal experiences and answered student questions. The Prefect Team is very grateful for Mr Pico and the other teachers who helped out, making this day possible.
If you have any suggestions, ideas or feedback for the prefects, please come and speak to us or fill out this digital suggestion box:
Building and resourcing a new school is not easy. Below is an article about the amalgamation of Newtown Boys and Petersham Girls high schools to create the state's first "Fame" school in 1989. It also shows student and teacher responses to the move, and is taken from the May 1988 edition of The Eagle - Petersham Girls' student led newsletter.
Year 8 Office Monitors, Ivy and Lucia.
Each day, two Year 8 students are rostered on as Office Monitors, having had a year to become accustomed to the different classes and areas of the school whilst in Year 7. Office Monitor Duty plays an integral part in the school's daily operations.
Our monitors are kept busy running messages, covering and stamping books, assisting the Deputy Principals, Counsellors and Administration Staff with a variety of administrative tasks and much more.
NHSPA is grateful for the hard and dedicated work our Year 8 Monitors provide.
Thank You Year 8 Monitors!
Hi there, what are you enjoying about Year 10?
"I was put into a new class this year and I have really enjoyed making new friends."
"I am enjoying English. My teacher makes it really interesting and I like my class."
"I am getting better with being on top of my homework this year, much more than last year."
It was so lovely talking with you at recess today.
Thank you!

On Tuesday 19 March we began the first of a series of Artist Masterclasses for 2024. The aim of the Artist Masterclasses is to get students more familiar with professional artists and provide a far deeper connection and understanding to artists living and working in our city. It is a practical hands-on insight into the material and conceptual practice of artists that will elevate the work of our students.
We welcomed artist Catherine O'Donnell who began the day with an informal lecture to Year 11 and Year 12 Visual Arts students where she discussed her practice in drawing, elaborating on her perspective and trompe l'oeil techniques alongside the influences of her childhood, architecture and minimalism. Following this, 25 students had the opportunity to directly work with Catherine as she took students through simple yet challenging observation set ups using materials such as compressed charcoal and graphite. She shared her measuring techniques, ways to achieve crisp lines and how to control charcoal. Students produced detailed observational studies and Catherine was there to assist and share solutions to difficult perspective and tonal problems. Students came away with completed drawings and new skills in charcoal or graphite.
Catherine is represented by Dominik Mersch Gallery, a second-year drawing lecturer at the National Art School, and has had her work commissioned, shown and collected by numerous Australian galleries.
“Catherine O’Donnell’s drawings depict houses or more accurately, they depict the notion of home itself. Her drawings portray the architecture of a form that is so close to her, fibro houses, both the façade and the interior. Her drawings examine these specific urban dwellings as a site of complexity; it is an exploration of the architecture, social history, the everyday and the notion of home.” Dominik Mersch Gallery.
We were so fortunate to have Catherine O'Donnell come to NHSPA to run a lecture and masterclass with our students. A huge thank you to Mrs Kotik for organising such a special artist for us all to learn from.
You can find Catherine’s work here: https://www.catherineodonnell.com.au/
She is also part of a group show ‘Detail’ that is exhibited at Draw Space at 31A Enmore Road Newtown. Worth checking out from Thursday 7 to Sunday 31 March, so close to us all here at Newtown https://drawspace.org/
Year 12 has been learning about Food Preservation and Food Product Development and is developing a 12-month shelf-stable food.
Students learn about product design, sensory analysis, and consumer preferences.
They are developing marketing presentations to pitch their products to a potential company.
Last week, the sensory testing of the prototypes took place. The products look and taste amazing. Students enjoyed seeing and tasting each other's creations.
YR11 TOY DESIGN PROJECT
Year 11 students have been developing design concepts and construction techniques to produce a toy for a specific age between 5 to 12 years of age.
The toy must be age appropriate and address correct safety requirements and standards. Students have been exploring a diverse range of materials and innovative approaches to design and the final product.
The Premier's Debating Challenge for Years 11 and 12 is well underway and our senior students have risen to the demands of what is a highly challenging competition.
After comprehensively defeating Kellyville High School in round one and North Sydney Girls High School in round two, Team A will face Bonnyrigg High School in their next debate. Team B will meet with Caringbah High School after being victorious against Pennant Hills High School.
Well done to our Stage 6 debaters!

Special mentions to keeper Valentino Robins; and Miller Corcoran, Tobias Schmidt and Marcus Gadzev, for their solid defence - Ms Holland (PDHPE)

Coach Cole
The Boys' Volleyball Team met some tough opposition at South Sydney High School. Whereas our team has been doing a few 'casual' morning training sessions this term, it appeared the South Sydney boys had been professionally trained over a number of years as their warm-up drills demonstrated a high level of precision and coordination.
Nevertheless, our boys play-ed really well throughout the match, with great spirit and camaraderie. Whilst we received a bit of a 'schooling' in the first set, going down 25-9, we fought back to play some excellent points and extended rallies in the second set, losing narrowly 25-20. Everyone played to a much higher standard than I had seen in the training sessions, and with a bit more experience I think these boys have the makings of a very talented team.
You can expect an electrifying and engaging evening similar to this one, when Mr Basis last visited and collaborated with NHSPA in June 2021.
The school's Music, Dance and Drama Companies and Ensembles will soon go into pre-production for our first Showcase Season of 2024. This is always a hugely exciting time for our students collaborating in ensembles.
However, as an event in collaboration with Dimitris Basis and the 42nd Greek Festival of Sydney, tickets are already available for the following concert as part of our Showcase events.
Join us for our third concert, "Music from the Heart", featuring internationally renowned Greek singer, Dimitris Basis together with the NHSPA Symphony Orchestra and Choirs.

REMINDER TO PARENTS/CARERS
Please ensure any instrument cases brought to school for curriculum instruction, VITP (Vocal/Instrumental Tuition Program) lessons or ensemble rehearsals are clearly labelled with the student's name and contact details
(can be concealed inside a luggage tag).
This is to avoid any accidental swaps and to repatriate instruments found unattended. Thank You.
The school provides an opportunity for students to have instrumental and/or vocal lessons at NHSPA with professional tutors. The lessons take place during the school day on a rotational basis so that students do not miss the same class each week. Most lessons are half an hour in duration once a week over each school term.
This opportunity is available to all students enrolled in Newtown High School of the Performing Arts.
We are pausing new applicants into the VITP program until Term 2 2024 due to capacity.
New applications will not be examined until then.
You can sign up for the program and access lessons using this link:

PARENT ADVICE for Cyber Bullying from the eSafetyCommissioner
Use parental controls: Parental controls are software tools that allow you to monitor and limit what your child sees and does online.
They can be set up to do things like:
Block your child from accessing specific websites, apps or functions (like using a device’s camera, or the ability to buy things).
Filter different kinds of content — such as ‘adult’ or sexual content, content that may promote self-harm, eating disorders, violence, drugs, gambling, racism and terrorism.
Allow you to monitor your child’s use of connected devices, with reports on the sites they visit and the apps they use, how often and for how long.
Set time limits, blocking access after a set time.
If a device or program is shared by multiple members of your family, you should be able change the tool settings to reflect each user’s age and skills.
