NEWTOWN HIGH SCHOOL OF THE PERFORMING ARTS

Excellence, Creativity and Equity

LAND OF THE GADIGAL PEOPLE OF THE EORA NATION

BULLETIN 3 - Term 1 -  Friday 8 March 2024

Message From Deputy Principal (Wellbeing) - Karl Pico

As always, NHSPA is full of energy with many events and initiatives taking place or underway. Underpinning our school is a strong system of support guided by the principles of Positive Psychology, Growth Mindset and Restorative Practices. These practices support the values of the school: Excellence, Creativity and Equity.

NHSPA WELLBEING TEAM VISION STATEMENT

At Newtown High School of the Performing Arts we empower and inspire our community to explore its creativity and imagination, to strive for educational excellence and celebrate diversity.

Our aim is to develop independent, lifelong learners, critical thinkers and problem solvers through the provision of dynamic, authentic learning experiences in an inclusive school community where the arts are fostered in a climate of collaboration and mutual respect.

We seek to continually innovate to meet the needs of all learners whilst evaluating and measuring the impact of initiatives to drive continuous improvement.

NHSPA WELLBEING TEAM

The Wellbeing Team comprises dedicated expert staff who champion student voice and agency.

YEAR 7 PARENTS WELCOME AFTERNOON

A huge thank you to all of the Year 7 parents who attended the New Parents' Afternoon Tea on Tuesday 5 March. This was good opportunity for parents to connect with each other in an informal way and be introduced to the NHSPA P&C and the wonderful work they do to support the school. The evening was also important to meet the Heads of Department and receive the assessment booklet and calendar. Thank you to the P&C for hosting another successful event.

THE YEAR 7 PEER SUPPORT CAMP

The Year 7 Peer Support Camp at the Tops Conference Centre, Stanwell Tops will be held on Wednesday 20 March to Friday 22 March. The Peer Support Program is a valued wellbeing initiative that takes place for our Year 7 cohort each year as part of the transition into high school program. Year 10 Peer Support leaders will also attend the camp with Year 7 students. The camp will give our Year 7 students the opportunity to form closer friendships with each other and with their Peer Support leaders. This camp is a huge organisational event and responsibility for staff, particularly Amanda DiCamillo, Michael Preston and Alex Menyhart. Our appreciation goes out to all teachers involved in ensuring our students are consistently provided with opportunities that consolidate and extend learning.

PRIDE FESTIVAL

The Pride Festival is a student-led initiative which focus on celebrating diversity, inclusivity and working collaboratively to create a just society. This is the second year the Festival has occurred and is culmination of hard work led by our LGBQTIA+ student group, mentored by our SSO Dean Adams.  The event was supported by the Prefects, SEED Team and student volunteers. More than a celebration, this event seeks to nurture a safe space where students can flourish regardless of gender, sexuality, race, religion and ability. Opportunities were provided to support student agency and a huge thank you to Newtown Neighborhood Centre, Inner West Police, Rainbow Families, and Twenty Ten services for attending the festival. Each external service provided information about support services available for young people. A QandA panel will be held later in the term to further consolidate and continue the conversation about what each and every member of our school community can do to foster a safe and inclusive space. We would also like to thank all of the parents and carers, Tempe High School and Canterbury Girls who attended the event.

 COURSE CHANGES

There have been some students requesting changes to their course pattern of study for 2024. Any requests for changes to courses or electives studied by Years 8, 9, 10 or 11 for 2024 were due by 23 February. There will be no further changes unless circumstances are deemed exceptional. This will ensure students have plenty of class time to meet outcomes and perform to their potential.

SENIOR STUDENT PRIVILEGES

In recognition of the maturity and consistent effort of our senior students, Year 11 students will soon be given the privilege of flexible starting and finishing times, including permission to leave the school grounds at lunchtime once all signed permission notes are returned. The permission note clearly outlines the conditions of these privileges. Students are expected to be at school by 10am (if they have no class Period 1) and swipe in and swipe out if they are leaving school early. It is the Year 11 student’s responsibility to follow this process in order to maintain accurate attendance records.

PARENT TEACHER NIGHTS

The Year 12 Parent Teacher Night will take place on Thursday 4 April from 3pm until 6:30pm. Bookings will open on Tuesday 19 March from 9am and close on Tuesday 2 April. To book interviews for the Year 12 Parent Teacher Night, you will need your Parent Portal username and password to log into the Parent Portal via the school website.  We encourage parents to attend this evening to discuss the progress of their child.  The school has refined our Parent Teacher Nights following feedback from the school community. The school gym and G Block will be the venue for the Year 12 Parent Teacher Night. Should you experience difficulties booking interview times, please do not hesitate to contact the school for assistance.

Parent Teacher evenings are a very worthwhile opportunity for parents, students, and their teachers to meet and engage in early productive dialogue. We are looking forward to seeing many of our parents and students at our upcoming parent teacher evenings. Parent Teacher interviews for Year 10 and Year 11 will be held on Tuesday 9 April, Year 8 and 9 on Thursday 9 May, and Year 7 Parent Teacher Night will be held on Tuesday 28 May. Information regarding Parent Teacher Nights will be circulated to students, emailed to parents, and made available on the website at least two weeks prior to each Parent Teacher Night.

ATTENDANCE

It is a legal requirement to maintain reliable attendance records for all students. If your child needs to leave the school early when they have timetabled lessons, students should bring a letter to the office before school and must go to the swipe room to swipe out before they leave the school. Whole day absences need to be explained by phoning the school, replying to the absentee SMS, in writing upon your child’s return to school within seven days, or through the SENTRAL app. Regular attendance is essential to ensure each student feels connected with their peers and staff and actively engages in all aspect of teaching and learning.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

The Prefects hosted their annual International Women's Day Breakfast and QandA Panel on Friday 8 March. The theme of the event: Count Her In. Invest in Women. Accelerate Progress. Thank you to our fabulous panelists: Jenny Leong MP, Kylie Washington, Dr Christine Newman and Dr Jess Brooks, for leading the conversation and sharing their inspiring journeys with our students.

Newstown - Debut - Volume One

NEWSTOWN - STUDENT NEWSPAPER

Nurturing student voice and a sense of belonging is a central focus of NHSPA Wellbeing practices.  Newstown was established last year by the 2023 Prefect Body. In 2024, a dedicated group of students have formed the Newstown team to elevate student voice.

Mission Statement

Newstown newspaper is all about work for students, by students: a chance to create and share what we think should be written. And the other great thing about the newspaper? It changes with us. So expect a dynamic and exciting place for your news, stories, insight, and much more.

We are so proud of the level of professionalism shown by the team and look forward to the next issue.

NAPLAN EXAMS

The National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment of literacy and numeracy skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. Each year, students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in tests for Writing, Reading, Conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy.

Year 7 students will complete the NAPLAN online exams on Wednesday 13 March to Friday 15 March 2024.

Year 9 students will complete the NAPLAN exams on Wednesday 20 March to Friday 22 March 2024.

A reminder that the NAPLAN exams will be completed online. As a result, all year 7 and 9 students participating in NAPLAN online must install and test the Locked Down Browser (LDB) on their BYOD laptop prior to undertaking the online test.

News From Our Prefects

To celebrate Mardi Gras, we started this month off with Pride Fest, Friday 1 March 2024. It was a day full of music, happiness, colours and fairy bread!

The prefects held a bubble tea stand filled with rainbow jellies, tapioca pearls and iced black tea. The Prefect Team is lucky to be part of such a wonderful day for our school to come together to celebrate individuality and acceptance.

Congratulations to the LGBTQIA+ & Ally Student Group for pulling off such a great initiative!

If you have any suggestions, ideas, or feedback for the prefects, please come and speak to us or fill out this form:  Prefect Suggestion Box

From the NHSPA Archives - Samantha Rowe (Teacher Librarian)

When we think of the term "archives", many people think of old, dusty manuscripts and artifacts from a bygone era that are helpful to historians or a curiosity for the average person. Although this is also true, archives are a living museum, a dynamic community resource that is ever-growing and changing, that requires attention and care as new things occur everyday in society. For example, events as recently as yesterday may be added to an archive. NHSPA this week has been celebrating PRIDE. Below are elements from the archive - a throw back to World Pride at NHSPA last year.

NHSPA Pride Festival

The Pride Festival in Sydney began one Saturday night on Oxford Street in 1978 as a protest - a violent arrest of members of the LGBTQI+ community in New York in the late 1960s. In Sydney a decade later, "Out of the bars and into the streets!" resulted in many arrests under the Summary Offences Act, which was repealed a year later by Neville Wran, then NSW Premier. From 1979 onwards, the festival and parade has grown to be a symbol of inclusion and diversity in society and continually offers a safe place for many people to learn, accept and celebrate.

Happy Pride Festival, NHSPA!

Vox Pop

Vivienne and Ellla (Year 7)

Hi there, so what are you enjoying about Year 7?

"We both love Science, the Science Club

and the Role-Playing Club".

That's fantastic.

Did you know each other before you started at NHSPA?

"No - we met at the Role Playing Club".

Wonderful - very nice to meet you.

"Nice to meet you too!"

Year 7 & new Parent Welcome

It was lovely to see many of our new Year 7 parent/carers at the New Parent Welcome on Tuesday afternoon, 5 March 2024.  A great opportunity to meet other parents and introduce Head Teachers, Year Advisors Michael Preston and Alex Menyhart, Deputy Principal Belinda Scanlan, and Principal Dr Susan Green.  Year 7 Learning Booklets and Assessment Calendars were available for collection and will be accessible on your child's Year 7 Google Classroom as well as on the NHSPA school website.  The Learning Booklet includes our policy for assessment task lateness and absence.

Thank you to our teachers and staff with special thanks to the NHSPA P&C for their hard work welcoming our new parents to Newtown High School of the Performing Arts.

Year 7 NAPLAN testing will be next week on Wednesday 13, Thursday 14 and Friday 15 March (catch up).

We are very much looking forward to Year 7 Camp in Week 8, Wednesday 20 March - Friday 22 March, at The Tops Conference Centre - Stanwell Tops.

Welcome to all our new parents!

ENCORE 2024 - Exemplary HSC Music

Congratulations to Year 12 2023 Newtown students, Emma Lang (clarinet) and Emily Harris (voice)! Emma and Emily presented exemplary works from their HSC Music performance programs as part of NESA's Encore, an annual concert of statewide musical excellence in the HSC. The concert was an excellent tour de force of composition and performance exemplars from across the state in Music.

DRAMA - & Juliet @ Sydney Lyric Theatre

On Wednesday night, 6 March, staff and Senior Drama students had the privilege of attending a preview performance of "& Juliet" at the Lyric Theatre. This was made possible by our industry links with the production. It is such a great opportunity for us to be able to offer students the chance to see such large scale productions locally. The students were so impressed with the performances and quality of the production and came away inspired.

It is especially inspiring that the Musical Director, Conductor and Keyboard 1 for & Juliet's Australian productions (Perth, Melbourne and Sydney so far) is Michael Azzopardi, Newtown HSPA alumni of 1998 and hugely respected musical theatre, jazz and ensemble specialist. Michael has had a storied career as the Musical Director or Associate for major professional productions in Australia such as Hamilton, The Lion King, Billy Elliot, Priscilla, Mamma Mia, Jersey Boys and Avenue Q.

Michael Azzopardi: "I wouldn't be the musician I am today if it weren't for (Newtown) and everyone who helped me along the way. Chicago (NHSPA) was my first taste of doing a theatre show and it was a big learning experience. I have lots of fond memories of it too! I always proudly fly the NHSPA flag wherever I can."  7 March 2024

DRAMA - Senior Drama Students, UK Trip Meeting

On Tuesday night our Senior Drama students had their pre-departure meeting for our UK Drama Excursion.

In the April school holidays, students will be visiting Strafford upon Avon and attending workshops at the Royal Shakespeare Company and visiting Warner Bros Studios for a fully immersive look into the design behind the Harry Potter films. Then they will travel to London where they will spend time working with internationally acclaimed physical theatre companies Complicite and Frantic Assembly.

We can't wait for them to return after the holidays, keen to share all their newfound knowledge and skills with their peers.

VISUAL ARTS Melbourne Art Tour - Rhianna Blake Head Teacher Visual Arts

On Friday 1 March 2024, Ms O’Donnell and I began NHSPA's first Melbourne Art Tour with our Year 12 Visual Arts students. Meeting at the airport at 6am, we got set and ready to fly to Melbourne and it turned on its best weather just for us as we had a glorious sunny day when we arrived.

After dropping our bags at the hotel, we walked to ACCA - the Australian Center for Contemporary Art to view the exhibition 'From the Other Side' which brought together nineteen Australian and international artists, integrating historical and contemporary works, alongside key new commissions that draw upon horror’s capacity to transgress and destabilise forms of power and subjugation.

Next stop, the NGV, where we divided into two groups and met educators from the gallery who took us on a talk to discuss key artworks featured in the NGV's Triennial. After this, it was all about exploring the huge collection and most importantly the Triennial which includes 120 artists, designers and collectives at the forefront of global and contemporary art practice. So much art to change our thinking, begin conversations about art, and to open our eyes to new possibilities in the art world.

Taking in so much art really makes everyone hungry; so we all had some time to explore the culinary delights of Melbourne's CBD for dinner, especially Chinatown as it was close to the hotel. Considering it was such an early start, we were all off to bed by 9pm ready for the next day's adventure.

Day 2, we were hungry and ready for more art so the best way to start this was with a good breakfast. Brunetti's is a Melbourne institution so you can't say you've been to Melbourne without getting at least coffee (and some breakfast) at Brunetti's!

We were keen and eager to get the art day started and it began at the Ian Potter Centre in Federation Square. This gallery soon became some students' favourite, as it offered so much such as: Wurrdha Marra which is a dynamic exhibition space showing works from the NGV’s collection of First Nations Australian art and design; Watercolour Country: 100 works from Hermannsburg: this exhibition brought together one hundred watercolours made by Aranda, Western Aranda, Eastern Aranda and Kemarre/Loritja artists working at Ntaria/Hermannsburg, across generations; and finally, a huge range of artworks from the international collection. After this, we went back to the NGV to see more of the artworks from the Triennial that we missed from yesterday. The NGV is so big, it's hard to see it all in just one day or even two.

Another Melbourne must-do is a bit of shopping! Students had some free time to discover some of Melbourne's beautiful arcades, Bourke St Mall and find the range of op-shops dotted around the city. So many laneways in comparison to Sydney and the city centre has such a buzz. After all the exploring and shopping, students came back to the hotel where we ordered a delivery of pizza and pasta taking over the hotel's mezzanine level to relax and chat about some of the artworks that we noticed more deeply today and some of the shopping finds. With our last day tomorrow, an early night was on the cards and we were all in our rooms by 9pm.

Day 3, our last day in Melbourne. The weather was a little cooler, however, no rain and sunny skies in our sights, we headed over to Brunetti's for another perfect breakfast and coffee and then over to wait outside ACMI to meet our artist guides for the Street Art Walking Tour. After splitting into 2 groups, our guides took us firstly to Hosier Lane, ACDC Lane and then into some of the lesser known laneways to show us more street art and begin conversations about why do we make art, what is the art's meaning and why make street art? Not forgetting our artist guides are also practising artists, we caught the tram back to Blender Studios where we got to see their working spaces and how they have a fine art side to their art practice as well as making street art.

After lots of walking, it was finally time to go back to the hotel, collect our bags and wait for the shuttle to take us to the airport. We were very fortunate, our flight was pretty close to time and we all picked up our bags at Sydney at about 7pm and went home where I am sure everyone's head hit the pillow quickly.

I really hope all the students had a wonderful time on the first Melbourne Art Tour and that it opened their eyes to the questions that art throws at us, deepened the intellectual conversations that it conjures, and widened their eyes to another Australian city so we can come out of our Sydney bubble just a little.

I would also like to thank Ms O'Donnell for giving up her time to come on this tour as she also assisted with the planning and making it all come to life. With all of this new inspiration, the hard work continues on creating HSC Bodies of Work, and we hope to see more students utilise their time wisely in our Monday Art Studio sessions as well as making the most of study periods in the art rooms, so that they can complete an HSC Body of Work that they feel excited and proud of.

HSIE Skillin' It 2024

Tuesday 27 February 2024 saw the first meet of the Skillin’ It video game competition for 2024. Now in its fifth year, it was amazing to see the younger siblings of long-time competitors joining the fray. With nearly 60 students piling into G10, It quickly became clear that this was going to be the biggest competition we’ve ever had!

As the first race took off, the room shook with cheers… which were quickly replaced by screams as one of the favourites in the heat hit a banana and spun off the edge of the track. Every student showed tremendous generosity and patience as the controllers slowly made their way from competitor to competitor. Not a discouraging word was heard all afternoon, and everyone congratulated both their friends and their temporary foes alike.

Due to the overwhelming numbers showing their interest in this year’s tournament, it was decided that Skillin’ It will run every Tuesday AND Wednesday this year.

The grand final is going to be fiercely fought in Term 3!

The school provides an opportunity for students to have instrumental and/or vocal lessons at NHSPA with professional tutors. Most lessons are half an hour in duration once a week over each school term.

This opportunity is available to all students enrolled in Newtown High School of the Performing Arts.

Exhibition of Odyssey II featuring Effie Milos Paper Marble Steel

In 2019 I travelled to Greece to spend time learning and making what I hoped would be a body of work that would focus on an odyssey. Some journeys involve much more than travel to a predetermined destination.

They are searching rather than purposeful, and bring separation, loss and a longing that can last a lifetime. They happen in our minds and hearts, as well as to our bodies.

I hope you can make it (details on poster)
