YEAR 12
Our 2024 Year 12 students complete their HSC examinations this week. Congratulations to them, their families and teachers. We thank them for the contribution they have made to our school and look forward to celebrating their results at the end of the year.
We would like to thank the parents of our Year 12 students for the support they have offered their children over this challenging year. We are aware and appreciate that parenting during the HSC year is often a stressful and difficult task. We would also like to thank the Year 12 teachers for the guidance and support they have provided each of the students in their classes during this HSC year.
Year 12 students are invited to their Sign-out Day on Tuesday 12 November at 10am. This will be their opportunity for students to return text and library books. A letter has been sent home with details of this event.
YEAR 11
Year 11 students have made the important transition into their HSC courses from the start of this term. All students were issued with the HSC assessment booklet and calendar for 2024/25. It is highly recommended that students and their parents become familiar with the senior assessment policy and examine the assessment schedules and requirements for each of their courses. As school leaders, it is also expected that Year 11 wear the appropriate school uniform and embrace the serious work ethic required of senior students. The term ends for Year 11 with an assessment block and it is strongly recommended that the preparation for this important week start from now, with a regular program of revision of the course content covered in each lesson.
Reports for students in Year 11 were issued on 6 November during a meeting with their Curriculum Advisers. Students by now may be in a position to decide their pattern of study in the HSC year. Students are advised not to make a hasty decision if unsure of a subject choice, and instead maintain 12 units until later in the term or next year. Some students have already made decisions to drop a course. Once the documentation has been completed students will be issued with updated timetables and will be invited to the library or Learning Centre to work independently during study periods.
YEAR 7 -10
This time of the term is a busy assessment period for all our students. Many students have already completed key assessment tasks in all subjects. The student grades that will appear in their semester 2 reports reflect the outcomes assessed in these tasks and our Year 9 and 10 students will meet with their curriculum advisors later in the term to review their progress and personal best targets set this year. Semester 2 reports will be sent home at the end of this term.
A reminder that the afternoon study centre is open in the Library every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons until 5pm if students need support and advice from teachers.
EXECUTIVE CONFERENCE
At last week’s executive conference, the school's executive team collaboratively worked on developing our 2025-2028 School Excellence Plan. Today, Friday 8 November, is School Counsellor and School Psychologist Recognition Day. We recognise and thank our two excellent school psychologists, Regan Pullen and Jess Cashman.
Every day they perform invaluable work, and we are so lucky to have Regan and Jess at NHSPA. They support our students in so many ways. They listen and understand and work to find extra support for our students, families, and staff.
Regan and Jess, we are grateful for your skills,
professionalism and dedication.
Thank you for your hard work this year!
Student Led Learning Conferences (Years 7 and 8)
At Newtown High School of the Performing Arts, we aim to empower our students to understand and have agency in their own learning. Reflecting upon and discussing learning helps students to understand how they learn, what their strengths and areas for improvement are and to develop future learning goals. Student Led Learning Conferences and e-learning Portfolios are an integral part of our approach.
Please find below the information you will need for a successful Student Led Learning Conference with your child.
What is a Student Led Learning Conference (SLLC)?
Student Led Learning Conferences provide students and parents/carers with an opportunity to meet and discuss learning at a designated time. Research shows that these types of discussions with a student’s support team allow students to consolidate learning and develop goals for future learning.
Students have been working closely with teachers to create an online e-Learning Portfolio (e-LP) that highlights their learning journey. Students select evidence of their learning to upload to their portfolio, which may include work in progress, finished products or photographs of learning in progress and are encouraged to choose evidence which shows their own personal learning triumphs, these will be different for each student.
Students may also include feedback from peers and teachers and self-reflections on both how and what they have learnt in each subject.
The process of selecting evidence, writing self-reflections and discussing their attributes as learners assists students to deepen their understanding of how they learn. This approach stems from research on brain plasticity and encourages students to identify and actively work on developing dispositions for learning.
Students will share their e-LP with parents/carers at the Student Led Learning Conference and discuss their learning across all their courses.
When is the conference?
Term 4, Week 6 or 7. Choose a time that suits you.
Where are Student Led Learning Conferences?
This year the conference will take place at your home or a suitable location.
What do parents/carers need to do?
Ask your child when a good time would be to discuss their learning dedicating approximately 30 minutes to the conversation.
At the designated time your child will show you their e-Learning Portfolio, including tabs and reflections on their learning for each of their courses. They will discuss what and how they have been learning. Parents are encouraged to engage in the discussion and ask questions.
If your child needs some prompting to elaborate you could consider asking some of the following questions of your child:
• What are your strengths as a learner in this particular subject?
• What are some areas you would like to improve in this subject?
• What skills were developed over the course of the year?
• What are your learning goals for this term, 2024 or the future?
• What ways could parents/carers help foster these goals?
Parents/carers and students will be sent a link to a survey to gauge your feedback on the success of the SLLC. This helps us to continually improve and adapt and we thank you in advance for your contribution.

YEAR 10 CLASSICAL BALLET SHOW 2024
The Year 10 Classical Ballet Show, performed on Friday 1 November, was a collaborative effort by eight talented Year 10 students. They worked together to plan, choreograph, and refine a captivating program that featured both class pieces and repertoire from renowned ballets.
The production also included performances by our Year 8 and 9 Classical Ballet students, who contributed to making the show truly exceptional.
"We are grateful for the opportunity to expand our skills beyond performance, including in production, directing, music editing, and choreography.
This experience was both rewarding and enjoyable, enhancing our communication and organisational abilities while fostering collaboration across year groups. Working as a team was especially fulfilling, and we felt a great sense of accomplishment upon completing this project.
Our sincere thanks to the dedicated Dance Department, Ben Turner, and the exceptional tech crew for helping bring our vision to life." - Year 10 Classical Ballet Students.

DRAMA
Our 2024 HSC Drama cohort sat for their HSC Drama Written Examination on 31 October. Pictured are some of our proud and relieved students with Ms Hardingham after the exam.
Well done to our amazing Drama students on giving the exam your all!
In week 3, our new Year 12 students had the great privilege of hearing from actor John Blair, who has been intimately involved with our HSC text The Visitors by Jane Harrison since it was first workshopped at the Yellamundie Festival in 2013.
John is a Kamilaroi man who grew up in Tingha in North Western NSW before moving to Sydney in the 1980s and embarking on a long and successful acting career. John has played two different characters in The Visitors, in the original production in 2020 (see bottom image) and in this year's national touring production. John shared his insights into the play, into the actor's process, into what it takes to develop a new work, and into the deep appreciation Indigenous and non-Indigenous audiences have for this remarkable play.
Thank you to Aurielle Smith (pictured top with Ms Nics, John, and his son Maliyan's spectacular eagle cloak) for instigating this opportunity for us to hear and learn from John.
48 of our Year 9 Drama students were treated to a professional production courtesy of Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP) this week. Adapted by playwright Julian Larnach from Favel Parrett’s award-winning debut novel, Past the Shallows is an ode to brotherhood and a heart-wrenching, lyrical exploration of mortality, family secrets and the capacity for both brutality and tenderness within contemporary masculinity.
Thank you to ATYP, Ms Van Munster and Ms Hoddinott for making this excursion possible!

The school provides an opportunity for students to have instrumental and/or vocal lessons at NHSPA with professional tutors. The lessons take place during the school day on a rotational basis so that students do not miss the same class each week. Most lessons are half an hour in duration once a week over each school term.
This opportunity is available to all students enrolled in Newtown High School of the Performing Arts.
Students are reminded that they need to swipe in and out of every lesson.
You can sign up for the program and access lessons using this link:

Year 10 Food Technology
In Year 10 Food Technology, students have engaged deeply with the critical topic of diet-related diseases, specifically focusing on Cardio Vascular Disease, Osteoporosis, and Bowel Cancer. Taking on the role of a dietitian, students crafted detailed meal plans tailored for individuals affected by one of these conditions, ensuring that their selections were both nutritious and beneficial.
Each student conducted a thorough nutritional analysis of the foods included in their plans, allowing them to understand the dietary implications of their choices. To further enhance their learning experience, students created informative YouTube videos aimed at educating patients about their specific diseases, including causes, symptoms, and healthy food alternatives.
This project not only developed their research and culinary skills but also fostered a sense of responsibility and awareness about the impact of diet on health, preparing them to be informed advocates for healthier living.
Year 9 Food Technology
In Year 9 Food Technology, students have been diving into the important topic of nutrition and exploring healthy alternatives to their favourite fast foods.
As part of this engaging unit, each student developed a unique dish that serves as a healthier substitute for a popular fast food item. They also conducted a comprehensive nutritional analysis of selected fast food options, comparing their findings against their own personal recommended daily intake needs.
This hands-on approach not only enhanced their understanding of nutrition but also empowered them to make informed food choices, reinforcing the benefits of cooking with wholesome ingredients. The creativity and enthusiasm displayed throughout this project highlight the students' commitment to healthier eating habits and their growing culinary skills.

FROM THE ARCHIVES
The 2000 Sydney Olympics was a historical event for Australia and the world, showcasing not only athletic excellence, but our vibrant culture and stunning landscapes of Eora, Sydney. The Sydney Olympics brought Australia onto the global stage, with record-breaking performances, innovative event planning, and an iconic opening ceremony (with performances from 84 of NHSPA students).
The opening ceremony also featured Aboriginal Australian culture and local icons like Cathy Freeman. The ceremony was described by the President of the International Olympic Committee, Juan Antonio Samaranch, as the most beautiful ceremony the world had ever seen. Australian athletes brought home an impressive 58 medals, including 16 golds. Achieving iconic moments that live on in Olympic history. Cathy Freeman’s 400m gold medal win was perhaps the most memorable, symbolising unity, reconciliation, and pride for Indigenous Australians.
How fantastic to see NHSPA students as part of these iconic moments in Australian history. 24 years on and we are still seeing NHSPA students striving for creative and academic excellence inside and outside of the school!

PARENT ADVICE for Cyber Bullying from the eSafetyCommissioner
Use parental controls: Parental controls are software tools that allow you to monitor and limit what your child sees and does online.
They can be set up to do things like:
Block your child from accessing specific websites, apps or functions (like using a device’s camera, or the ability to buy things).
Filter different kinds of content — such as ‘adult’ or sexual content, content that may promote self-harm, eating disorders, violence, drugs, gambling, racism and terrorism.
Allow you to monitor your child’s use of connected devices, with reports on the sites they visit and the apps they use, how often and for how long.
Set time limits, blocking access after a set time.
If a device or program is shared by multiple members of your family, you should be able change the tool settings to reflect each user’s age and skills.

We invite you to contribute towards our St George’s Hall Trust Fund.
St George’s Hall and The Studio Theatre are used by all students for year meetings, presentation assemblies, performances and various incursion workshops.
Through the St George’s Hall Trust Fund, the school is able to enhance the Performing and Visual Arts within the school by improving the physical spaces to create 'state of the art' venues, provide scholarships to students, technical equipment, musical instruments, and workshops with industry professionals.
The school is currently looking to install air-conditioning in St George’s Hall and replacing the seating in the Studio Theatre.
We suggest a donation of $200 per year per family. Any amount donated to the St George’s Hall Trust fund is tax deductible.
Donations can be made online through your School Bytes Parent Portal.
