It’s been a busy but smooth start to Term 3!
The Trial HSC exams were held during the first three weeks of this term and have run smoothly, with our students having taken these exams very seriously. Year 12 students have been back into school routine from the start of this week. The post-trial period is vital for our students as it is during this time where valuable feedback, revision and refinement of all major works and practicals can take place. Attendance at school during this period is mandatory and experience has demonstrated a very positive correlation between regular attendance at school during the post-trial period and enhanced final HSC results. A rigorous and diligent home study programme is equally important to ensure students are well prepared for the Higher School Certificate written examinations commencing on Tuesday 15 October.
For many of our Year 12 students the practical HSC examinations commence this month with HSC Dance Practical examinations having already taken place this week from 12-16 August. HSC Drama Practicals will be examined on 2 – 4 September (Week 7) and HSC Music exams take place in Week 8. The French Continuers students will be doing their HSC Oral exam on Saturday 17 August.
Over the next few weeks, Year 12 will exhibit their major works and HSC performances and we extend an invitation to our community to attend these evenings. The Textiles and Design exhibition will be in the Studio Theatre on Wednesday 21 August from 6.00pm. English Extension 2 students will present excerpts from their major works in the library starting at 5pm and the Visual Arts exhibition will be open from 6pm in St George’s Hall on Wednesday 28 August. Finally, Design and Technology exhibition and HSC Music Soiree Evening will be on Tuesday 3 September.
To provide parents an opportunity to view the HSC Drama works that our Year 12 cohort have produced as part of their HSC course, three HSC Drama Trial Open Examination nights were held on Tuesday 6 August to Thursday 8 August. This was a wonderful showcase of the talents of our Year 12 students and a chance for all members of the school community to enjoy the HSC performances that our students have worked so diligently on throughout the year.
We wish every Year 12 student the very best of luck as they enter the final stages of their secondary schooling.
SUBJECT SELECTION
Term 3 is an important term for many of our year groups as it involves selecting subjects for 2025. In Week 2, Year 8 students attended an elective course information session and following this, students met with their Curriculum Advisers on Friday 9 August to choose their 2025 Year 9 electives. All relevant information including the Elective subject information booklets were emailed to Year 8 parents earlier so that they could assist their child in making the right choices.
On Tuesday 20 August our current Year 11 students will attend an HSC information session which will be held during Period 4. This session will provide students with information about extension courses offered as well as the requirements of the HSC. This presentation will be shared with parents. Following this, on 26 August, Year 11 students will have their course pattern of study interviews. Students will get to meet with their curriculum advisers who will help them think through choices of picking up extension courses or dropping subjects for their final HSC year.
Our annual Careers Expo is on Thursday 22 August. Years 10, 11 and 12 parents are invited to attend the relevant sessions on the day. Along with the Careers Expo there will also be talks for students and parents, given by the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) on what to consider before selecting subjects. This day will give parents and students the opportunity to discuss career options and pathways with many tertiary institutions, and gather information from UAC. This will allow for informed decisions to be made in regard to students’ pattern of study for Years 11, 12 and beyond. As part of the Careers Expo, Year 10 students and their parents will also be attending a Year 11 2025 course information afternoon. This presentation will involve finding out about the many courses we offer in senior school as well as understand the HSC requirements. On Wednesday 28 August, Year 10 students along with our new Year 11 students for 2025, will meet with the curriculum advisers for their course selection interviews to discuss their Preliminary and HSC pattern of study.
YEAR 9 LEADERSHIP CAMP
The Year 9 students travelled to “The Great Aussie Bush Camp” at Tea Gardens to participate in the 3-day Leadership camp on 7 to 9 August. At camp, the students participated in activities such as abseiling, pioneering, archery, power fan and rock climbing. The students were highly engaged and motivated over the three days. The staff who attended were impressed with our students and recognised the leadership potential evident amongst the students. Thank you to Ms Di Camillo for her organisation of the camp and to all staff who attended.
Uniform
Newtown High School of the Performing Arts is a uniform school. Uniform is only one aspect of the high expectations culture of our school and our uniform is looking good!
There has been a very visible improvement this term and that is fantastic to see, and we know it will continue to improve as uniform expectations become accustomed practice.
Students are expected to be in correct uniform every day. If there is a reason that a student cannot be in uniform on a particular day, a note, signed by parent/carer, needs to be given to the Swipe Room before school and the student will receive a uniform pass.
Uniform is a safety issue, a social issue around equity, around image, and uniform is often linked with behaviour.
A REMINDER TO EVERYONE:

A lunchtime detention (half lunch) will be issued if a student is out of uniform more than three times.
An email will be sent alerting parents/carers that their child has been out of uniform and asking for their support.
Pickles has informed us that they have recently been low in sizes 12 and 14 sweaters, but they are getting more by the end of this week. If you have any questions about accessing the correct uniform from Pickles, or difficulty paying for our uniform, or any queries, please contact the school.
Student Attendance
The evidence is clear that consistent attendance is the essential first step for your child to have a positive experience at school. Every day matters for your child’s learning. In recent years we’ve seen too many students miss a day of school here and there. Missing school for students means missing assignments, time with friends, an important Maths lesson or getting picked for a sports team. With days missed, years are lost.
Students are required to attend school every day, whether it’s the first or last day of the term, Mondays, Fridays or days dedicated to sports carnivals, school excursions and incursions. Help us make sure your child is achieving their best and stays ahead in their learning with regular school attendance. The more time your child attends school, the greater their opportunity to learn and improve their wellbeing. Together, let’s build positive attendance habits for a lifetime.
If your child is absent from school, please let us know why as soon as possible, even if it is just a few minutes at the start or end of the school day. Of course, there will be times when your child is unable to be at school (like when they are unwell). Medical appointments should take place outside school hours where possible and family holidays should be taken in term breaks.
If your child is feeling anxious about coming to school and you need support, please reach out to your child’s Deputy Principal, Year Adviser or myself (Deputy Principal, Karl Pico) directly. Our staff are here to work with you and your child to help them attend school each and every day. There are also helpful resources for parents and carers on the Every Day Matters website.

BAG DAY - Year 12 Initiative
Last term, on Friday of Week 9, the Prefects supported an initiative of two Year 12 students - Tom Borbilas and Quinn Blabey.
Students were invited to bring their belongings in an object other than a bag and we saw some very creative choices! An empty vacuum, a toy shopping trolley, boxes, eskies, Santa sacks and baskets!
Gold coin donations were given to an incredible local charity 'Youth Off the Streets' which helps young people find stability through job training and emergency funds.
We loved seeing your creativity and enthusiasm in engaging with “Anything but a Bag Day”!

Visit to State Parliament and the Governor of NSW
Last term, we - School Captains - had a great opportunity to go visit State Parliament and the Governor of NSW. We started off with some speeches from ministers and a little Q&A, which slowly dwindled down as all the ministers were called off for meetings, and to watch the opposition's budget reply.
Despite it being freezing outside, things got heated when we visited the Legislative Assembly - lots of adults talking over each other and promptly being told to wait their turn.
After an intermission for lunch and a great meeting with our local MP Jenny Leong, we walked over to the beautiful Government House. It was incredible to see inside the house and all of its historic relics, mixed with modern furniture like the bottlebrush carpet the Governor commissioned after the bushfires. We got the chance to ask her questions about the future of parliament and her role as Governor, ending the day with a very fancy tea in the gardens.
A fantastic way to meet other leaders from around NSW, and we had a great day!

On Thursday 15 August, at the Year 8/11 Presentation Assembly, Ryan Nguyen blew us away with his performance of an excerpt from 'Weber's Romance' for trombone.
The piece was technically challenging, and Ryan's execution was beautiful!

Yudam (Christina) Kim - Year 9 - has won the Grand Prize at the 2024 Australian Korean Speech Contest.
As a result, she will be representing Australia at the World Korean Speech Contest on 16 August in Laos.

Year 9 Camp 2024 was many things!
Some of these things I know were planned, some not so much and all of varying excellence.
To start with the basics, I ate about 10 bananas, 12 muesli bars, 3 cups of cordial (2 of which were through snow cones) and almost 200 grams of dried fruit. The cabins were of 10 and the teachers were very kind to put us all with our friends. The bathrooms were really a world of grime on their own and much time was spent by the communal logs.
I really enjoyed the activities. My group had a legend of an instructor Toa, who was very relaxed, tolerant and clear; and another - not so much of a legend - fresh out of training guy Lachlan, who was still clingy to camp rules.
Day 1, we had fencing and archery, which are quite relaxed activities, until you are given the opportunity to push your instructors into the lake if you got 3 (for the annoying one) and 5 (for the more experienced one who didn't really agree to this) bullseyes. My group multi handedly got all 5 bullseyes and I, as one of the great shots, was able to push Toa into the small lake.
The next day we heard other camp instructors were following suit on this motive and also underestimating (willingly?) their students' skills. We started off strong with the Power Fan which is the not at all instinctive act of stepping off a 12.5m pole only connected to a harness and controlled rope. This was followed by Rock Climbing and Pioneering. My group made 'stretchers' by tying down two girls to planks of wood with rope and running them around a course (thanks Kaija and Natalie). Final activity was High Ropes which I believe was a crowd favourite and particularly pretty to see the sun slithering to your eyes in the treetops.
Mornings were cold and sleep was scarce but we all got up (mostly through instructors blasting music) and got packed up to leave. Our group finished up with Initiatives and Abseiling, which is in short badly doing team building activities and descending from a pretty view on a tall wall assisted by 2 ropes.
By the time we could see our buses parked, people were ready to hop in and head home, exhausted and dirty. The warm sun and beautiful environment was still a lovely place to reflect on the new and changed friendships I had experienced in the past 3 days (even with screaming teenagers in the back of my ears).
Year 9 camp 2024 was many many things and I'm grateful I got to be there for some of them.

National Science Week 10 - 18 August 2024
The theme for National Science week is SPECIES SURVIVAL - MORE THAN JUST SUSTAINABILITY
The theme aims to highlight the importance of science and innovation in ensuring the survival and
thriving of different species in an ever-changing world.
SCIENCE ACTVITIES
During Week 2, all of Year 10 students attended a Geography excursion to Taronga Zoo as part of their unit on Environmental Change and Management.
Each class participated in a hands-on workshop in one of the zoo's biome themed learning spaces as well as exploring the zoo exhibits to learn about biodiversity and a broad range of ecological issues.
The teachers of Year 10 were very impressed with the students' behaviour and engagement in the learning.
On Thursday 1 August 2024, Beatrix Nagy and Eleanor Stringer both from Year 8 participated in the 2024 Junior Secondary Speaking Award local final held at Granville Boys High School.
The participants who attended were required to deliver a prepared speech on a topic of their choosing, as well as an impromptu speech on an unseen topic. In this round of the competition the topic selected by the adjudicator was ‘Against the Clock’.
Both students provided exemplary performances in both categories. Beatrix delivered an excellent prepared speech on the inspirational ‘Refugee Olympic Team’, whilst Eleanor gave a highly humorous rendition of ‘Why I hate Camping’.
The quality of all performances on the day was of the highest possible calibre and unfortunately Beatrix and Eleanor did not proceed to the next stage of the competition; they are however, to be greatly commended for their participation and effort in this highly rigorous competition.
Well done Beatrix and Eleanor!
NSW Premier's Debating Challenge Years 11 and 12 Victory
Newtown High School of the Performing Arts has claimed victory in the Years 11 and 12 NSW Premier's Debating Challenge, emerging as state champions and receiving the prestigious Hume Barbour Trophy after a close debate against Kirrawee High School on Friday 16 August 2024.
The debating topic was "that the Olympic Games should always remain politically neutral", with the NHSPA Year 12 Debating team arguing the negative. Both teams made incredibly pertinent and well reasoned arguments, though Newtown's team was able to clearly articulate the need for individuals to make political statements during global events in order to effect meaningful social change.
We congratulate Josephine Bradfield, Rafael Gonzalez, Lola Merewether, Scarlett Saunders, Emma Walker and Karys Werstak on this amazing achievement, which is the culmination of many months of hard work and preparation. Well done!
We also thank Cassandra Ellis as the coach and coordinator for this debating team, who has worked tirelessly to ensure that these students have had every opportunity to find success in the competition.
At Sylvania Waters Athletics Track on 6 and 7 August
NHSPA took a strong team of 44 students, who competed in most track and field events. We congratulate all students who represented us extremely well, in particular our fabulous Year 12s who are balancing competitions with HSC trial exams!

Maya Germain recently competed at the Aerobics National Championships.
Her group came 1st in Australia and she came 5th as an individual which is amazing as she only transitioned to Aerobics Gymnastics 1 year ago.
Maya's group have been through several national trial events and reached the standard to represent Australia at the Junior World Championships in Pesaro, Italy in September.

DDANCE
This week our Year 12 Dance cohort have been completing their practical Dance HSC examinations.
These examinations contribute to 80% of the course, with each student performing their Core Performance and Major Study Performance. Additionally, Year 12 students are required to choreograph a dance on a junior student for their Core Composition component.
It has been lovely to witness the dedication, passion and joy in our students and their support for one another in this rigorous examination process.
We are so proud of our Year 12s and their junior dancers on this massive achievement!
We are thrilled to share that Year 12 students Khang Mai and Spencer Oxnam recently showcased their extraordinary talent at the SASSPA Conference, commemorating 30 years of the SASSPA organisation, at the Hilton Hotel on George Street. Their performance included Halvorsen's challenging 'Passacaglia' and Khang’s own arrangement of 'Waltzing Matilda,' captivating the audience and receiving a standing ovation from those in attendance.
The event was graced by high-profile dignitaries including Murat Dizdar Secretary of the NSW Department of Education and a number of DoE Executive Directors. Khang and Spencer’s exceptional performance not only highlighted their skill and dedication but also shone a spotlight on our school’s commitment to excellence in the Performing Arts.

Congratulations to our Year 9 students Lily Hodson and James Richardson, and Year 10 students Zoe Richardson, Sylvie Daniels, Alexandra Stavropoulos, Zoe Clarke, Gemma Walsh-Wood, Phoebe Crowe and Evie Ricketson (director) for their outstanding work in the Intersection Festival run by Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP).
The Intersection Festival showcases new work from young Australian playwrights and our students proudly represented NHSPA alongside other young actors from schools across the state. The students had a great experience working alongside industry professionals and other young actors. They performed for full houses in the ATYP Rebel Theatre at Walsh Bay.
Here are some moments from the HSC TRIAL exam for the whole cohort of Drama students, who completed their Trial exams in the Studio Theatre all of last week.
All students in NSW are required to create and stage an original piece of theatre as part of their study. The work on display last week was outstanding and all the groups are now well into the final fine tuning before the Practical Exams in Week 7.
In Week 3 of this term, Year 9 Design & Media (Film Studies) students were involved in a full day Incursion, learning all the tips and tricks of industry-standard editing software Premiere Pro which will enable them to take their editing skills to the next level. Students spent the day cutting, arranging, effecting and colour grading clips and even did some editing using footage from a multi-cam set up.

National Creative Producer and NHSPA parent Genevieve Dugard generously gave her time and expertise to Year 10 Drama Extension this week, inspiring us by sharing some of the company's most impactful projects and advising on models of community engagement and collaboration which will inform our own development of issues based plays for Years 7, 8 & 9.

Building on the insights developed through hearing from Genevieve Dugard, Year 10 Drama Extension have embarked upon their own Community Consultations here at school as they work in teams to develop Theatre-in-Education plays about important issues for Years 7, 8 & 9 which will be performed in Term 4.

We are offering creative workshops, with all profits going back to NHSPA. Whether you're a seasoned artist or a curious beginner, there is something for everyone, so please join us to support the school community and explore the fascinating world of collage. Our expert collage artist will guide you step by step, from selecting your papers to composing your own artworks; you will be surprised at how time flies in these all-inclusive workshops.
You will explore a range of techniques and styles and by the end of each workshop, you'll have crafted your own collage artwork that dances with colour, texture, and imagination.
The workshops can be a wonderful evening to have with friends or even some much needed creativity on your own.

Year 12 Textiles and Design
The Year 12 Textiles and Design students are approaching the culmination of their Major Textiles Projects, with submissions due on Monday 19 August. Each student has worked diligently to finalise their projects, demonstrating creativity, skill, and dedication.
A fashion show will be held on Wednesday 21 August at 6:00 pm in the Studio Theatre to celebrate their achievements. This event will showcase our students' incredible work and talent, and everyone is welcome to attend and support them as they present their creations.
Year 12 Design and Technology
The Year 12 Design and Technology students are in the final stretch of completing their Major Design Projects, with the deadline set for Thursday 29 August. Their commitment and hard work have been evident as they bring their innovative ideas to life.
A showcase evening will be held on Tuesday 3 September from 5:00 pm in the Common Room to celebrate their efforts. This event will display the students' remarkable projects, highlighting their creativity and technical skills. All are invited to attend and support our talented students as they unveil their work.

CAREERS EXPO - Subject Information Afternoon
If your child is in Year 7 this year, you can now provide online consent for their routine school vaccinations.
In Year 7, students are offered free vaccines for diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (dTpa) and human papillomavirus (HPV).
Vaccinations for Year 7 will be conducted at school on Wednesday 28 August 2024.
Vaccinations will only be provided at school IF CONSENT has been received.
HOW TO PROVIDE CONSENT:

2. Follow the steps to log in to your existing ServiceNSW account. This is the same account you may already use to renew your driver’s licence.

The school provides an opportunity for students to have instrumental and/or vocal lessons at NHSPA with professional tutors. We invite you to contribute towards our St George’s Hall Trust Fund.
St George’s Hall and The Studio Theatre are used by all students for year meetings, presentation assemblies, performances and various incursion workshops.
Through the St George’s Hall Trust Fund, the school is able to enhance the Performing and Visual Arts within the school by improving the physical spaces to create 'state of the art' venues, provide scholarships to students, technical equipment, musical instruments, and workshops with industry professionals.
The school is currently looking to install air-conditioning in St George’s Hall and replacing the seating in the Studio Theatre.
We suggest a donation of $200 per year per family. Any amount donated to the St George’s Hall Trust fund is tax deductible.

Use parental controls: Parental controls are software tools that allow you to monitor and limit what your child sees and does online.
They can be set up to do things like:
Block your child from accessing specific websites, apps or functions (like using a device’s camera, or the ability to buy things).
Filter different kinds of content — such as ‘adult’ or sexual content, content that may promote self-harm, eating disorders, violence, drugs, gambling, racism and terrorism.
Allow you to monitor your child’s use of connected devices, with reports on the sites they visit and the apps they use, how often and for how long.
Set time limits, blocking access after a set time.
If a device or program is shared by multiple members of your family, you should be able change the tool settings to reflect each user’s age and skills.

NHSPA Digital Devices Policy
Newtown High School of the Performing Arts (NHSPA) aims to develop skilled and creative learners who value the performing and creative arts as well as academic excellence. The school creates an environment where all students are encouraged to set high expectations and are supported to achieve their full potential.
RATIONALE AND PURPOSE
This procedure guides student use of digital devices at our school including requirements and expectations regarding the safe and appropriate use of mobile phones by students.
Our school acknowledges the educational value of digital devices in supporting and enhancing educational outcomes and student wellbeing. We also recognise they may cause harm if used inappropriately and that we need to support our students to use them in safe, responsible, and respectful ways.
OUR SCHOOL’S APPROACH
Digital devices, such as but not limited to, mobile phones, laptops, headphones, earphones/air pods, smart watches and other personal music or communication devices, should not negatively impact teaching and learning.
At school, all digital devices are turned off and out of sight between 8:55am – 3:10pm.
