The school year has started well, and students have settled in their new classes. All students will be issued the final assessment calendars and booklets which will also be posted on the school’s website and Parent Portal. These documents outline the nature of all assessment tasks scheduled over the year along with the dates when each task will be held. The school’s assessment policy procedures are outlined in the assessment booklets. Students are required to return acknowledge-ment slips located at the back of the assessment booklets to the relevant Year Adviser/Deputy Principal after becoming familiar with processes and procedures.
SENIOR ASSESSMENT POLICY AND PRODEDURES FOR ILLNESS/ MISADVENTURE
The Senior Assessment Policy and Procedures for Illness/Misadventure are outlined in the Year 11 and 12 assessment booklets. The school has a very clear policy in relation to assessment and it is important that all senior students and their parents familiarise themselves with the procedures in place. If due to an illness or misadventure, a student is unable to attend an assessment task the student or family member must contact the school to notify the relevant Deputy of their absence.
On the first day of their return to school the student must report to their Deputy and complete the Illness/Misadventure form. All students in the senior school have been informed about these procedures during their year meetings, however if there are any further questions regarding the policy we would encourage students and parents to contact us for further clarification.
COURSE CHANGES
There have been some students requesting changes to their course pattern of study for 2024. Any requests for changes to courses or electives studied by Years 8, 9, 10 or 11 for 2024 were due to be made in writing by 23 February 2024. There will be no further changes after this date. This will ensure students have plenty of class time to meet outcomes and perform to their potential.
AFTER SCHOOL STUDY CENTRE
A reminder for all members of the school community that the after school study centre is open on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons in the Library from 3.10 till 5pm; this is a very useful resource that could further support the students in their preparation and revision for assessment tasks and examinations.
SWIMMING CARNIVAL
The annual NHSPA Swimming Carnival was held at Prince Alfred Park Pool on Tuesday 13 February. The weather was great, and we saw many outstanding swims as well as a lot of fun for all involved. It was very pleasing to see the large numbers of students attending and competing on the day. The students should be commended on their excellent behaviour, participation and spirit throughout the day. Well done to all involved.
YEAR 11 LIFE READY PROGRAM
In Week 3, Year 11 Students attended the Life Ready Camp held at Stanwell Tops. It was a successful camp with students displaying exemplary behaviour, participating in all activities, engaging in the talks presented by the guest speakers and most importantly building stronger bonds with their peers. The last component of the Life Ready course will be covered by Paul Dillon, from Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia, when he addresses Year 11 students at school later this term. Thank you to Year 11 Student Advisers, Amber Johnson and Philip Podreka, for their organisation of such a successful camp and the Life Ready Program events and the staff who volunteered their time to make this camp such a rewarding experience for our students.
CO-CURRICULAR COMPANY AND ENSEMBLE AUDITIONS
The Co-curricular Company and Ensemble auditions for Semester 1 have been taking place. Audition dates and times have been communicated to students. We would like to encourage all our students to embrace the opportunities that are available as part of our co-curricular program. We would especially encourage the Years 7 and 11 auditioned students starting this year to take advantage of the performing arts opportunities being offered at NHSPA. All students involved will have the opportunity to perform in our 2024 Showcase seasons.
YEAR 9 AND 10 COACHING SESSIONS
The Year 9 and 10 Goal Setting Program commenced last week with an introductory presentation on character strengths and goal setting. Through coaching sessions, students set their short-term and long-term SMART goals and the steps they would take in achieving their goals. Students will meet with their coaches once a term to discuss their progress and refine their goals.
WHAT WORKS BEST
The Department of Education resource “What Works Best” provides evidence-based quality educational practices that are used to underpin teaching and learning. The resource offers eight themes that improve student educational outcomes: high expectations, explicit teaching, effective feedback, use of data to inform practice, assessment, classroom management, wellbeing and collaboration. These themes offer helpful ways of thinking about aspects of teaching practice. In continually developing high quality teaching, learning and leading practices and initiatives in enhancing student outcome, staff at NHSPA engage with the "What Works Best" resource in reflecting on their practice and identifying ways for improvement. Attached below is an overview of “What Works Best” for parents and carers.
SENTRAL PARENT PORTAL
The Parent Portal provides parents/carers information about their child's progress. Parents will have access to a range of information including records of attendance, student timetables, student academic reports and the ability to book an interview for Parent Teacher Nights. We would strongly encourage parents/carers to set up a Parent Portal account. Should you experience difficulties please do not hesitate to contact David Gaynor, our Technical Support officer for assistance (David.gaynor9@det.nsw.edu.au).
ATTENDANCE
Attendance is a concern with some students regularly arriving late to school. It is most important students leave home with sufficient time to reach the school by 8.45am. When students persistently miss parts of lessons, or whole lessons, it impacts negatively on their academic success. We want all our students to successfully fulfil their course requirements in all subjects. When your child is absent, either for a partial or whole day, a written explanation is required within one week of their return to school. This is a Department of Education requirement. With respect to students needing to leave early, we would appreciate if parents/carers could notify the school by 9am of the morning of the requested early departure. This information can be conveyed to the school by phone, e-mail or written note brought by your child. The early departure will be entered online to alert teachers of the early departure request to avoid your child being marked absent in class.

It has been great to have our students back in classrooms and settling into the school year. All our teachers are looking forward to a successful 2024 and are excited to work with you to make this a memorable year for your child.
The evidence is clear that consistent attendance is the essential first step for your child to have a positive experience at school. Every day matters for your child’s learning. In recent years we’ve seen too many students miss a day of school here and there. Missing school for students means missing assignments, time with friends, an important Maths lesson or getting picked for a sports team. With days missed, years are lost.
Students are required to attend school every day, whether it’s the first or last day of the term, Mondays, Fridays or days dedicated to sports carnivals, school excursions and incursions. Help us make sure your child is achieving their best and stays ahead in their learning with regular school attendance. The more time your child attends school, the greater their opportunity to learn, make new friends and improve their wellbeing. Together, let’s build positive attendance habits for a lifetime.
If your child is absent from school, please let us know why as soon as possible, even if it is just a few minutes at the start or end of the school day. Of course, there will be times when your child is unable to be at school (like when they are unwell). Medical appointments should take place outside school hours where possible and family holidays should be taken in term breaks.
If your child is feeling anxious about coming to school and you need support, please reach out to your child’s Deputy Principal, Year Adviser or myself directly. Our staff are here to work with you and your child to help them attend school each and every day. There are also helpful resources for parents and carers on the Every Day Matters website.
Thank you again for working with our teachers and support staff to make sure your child is at school, on time, every day. We all want to see our students learn, grow and belong in our equitable and outstanding education system.
Newtown High School of the Performing Arts
This Valentines Day, Wednesday 14 February 2024, the Prefects were busy spreading love and laughs as we visited classrooms to deliver roses, chocolates and letters. You may have seen a giant teddy bear walking around, who was giving hugs and high fives to some very lucky students.
A speaker was also playing some classic love tunes, so the day was filled with great music and great fun. As prefects, our priority is to engender a sense of community and friendship among peers; we aimed to ignite this by providing students with an opportunity to express their gratitude for one another. This fun initiative was the first of many to be organised by the Prefects in 2024, and all money raised is to contribute to the Year 12’s gift to the school.
If you have any suggestions, ideas or feedback for the prefects, please come and speak to us or fill out this digital suggestion box:

NSW Combined High Schools Sport Association (NSWCHSSA) knock out competitions have started for 2024, leading with our Open teams. The Open Boys Basketball Team played a tough game against Alexandria Park Community School. They took the lead early in the first quarter and kept us at bay for the half. The boys made an impressive 3rd quarter run to come back within 8. However, we exhausted our subs and couldn't close the point gap, going down 46-32 in the end.
Big shout out to the team for their non-stop hustle: Otis Barnett, Mathew Friedrichs, Marcus Gadzev, James Laird, Charlie White, Phoenix Sequeira Oberon Kriss-Lange, Mikey Lillis, Dylan Wrenn.
Bligh Zone Gala Day's are also upon us, with both the Open Girls and Open Boys Football teams competing at Marrickville High School against the other local schools in the Bligh Zone area. A very young Girls NHSPA team showed determination and grit throughout the day.
Awesome effort to the team consisting of: Sigrid Azzam, Ruby Barnes, Zoe Clarke, Ava Cummings-Donnelly, Ines Garcia, Close Gomes, Zoe Harney, Lily Hodson, Alice Klinder, Catherine Laga'aia, Clara Louw, Maeve Luckett, Billie Nicol, Nina Peros, Billie Riedl-Watson, Giorgia Ruggieri, Miah Smith.
The Open Boys team played competitively on what was an absolute scorching hot day. The team achieved the following results and were unfortunate to narrowly miss out on the final from goal differentials.
1-1 vs Marrickville HS
0-0 vs Tempe HS
1-0 vs Dulwich HS
2-0 vs Balmain HS
Great work to the team consisting of: Zac Allanson, Otis Barnett, Miller Corcoran, Rafi Dacol, Matty Friedrichs, Marcus Gadzev, Nelson Harris, Harry Kane, James Laird, Harrison Myles, Theo Ratnayake, Valentino Robins, Tobias Schmidt, Phoenix Sequeira, Ben shachar, Tristan Toledo-Fahey, Hugo Zammit.
Congratulations to Valentino Robins (Yr 12), Miller Corcoran (Yr 11) and Tobias Schmidt (Yr 11)
for being selected for the Bligh Zone Football Team to compete at the Sydney East Gala Day.

PARENT ADVICE for Cyber Bullying from the eSafetyCommissioner
Use parental controls: Parental controls are software tools that allow you to monitor and limit what your child sees and does online.
They can be set up to do things like:
Block your child from accessing specific websites, apps or functions (like using a device’s camera, or the ability to buy things).
Filter different kinds of content — such as ‘adult’ or sexual content, content that may promote self-harm, eating disorders, violence, drugs, gambling, racism and terrorism.
Allow you to monitor your child’s use of connected devices, with reports on the sites they visit and the apps they use, how often and for how long.
Set time limits, blocking access after a set time.
If a device or program is shared by multiple members of your family, you should be able change the tool settings to reflect each user’s age and skills.
For further parental support please see the below links.

On Thursday 15 February 2024, Year 8 attended a performance of Wired, from Brainstorm Productions. This performance used interactive theatre to address issues around caring for mental health, developing positive self-care strategies and managing personal relationships in the online space. The performance examined some of the ways that students might be drawn into negative online experiences, negative thought patterns, or poor decision making, and provided coping strategies for building resilience, help-seeking and fostering positive relationships.
Students were both engaged and entertained by the theatrical format of the presentation, but more importantly, the issues addressed in the show resonated with them, with many continuing to analyse, discuss and reflect on these ideas long after the end of the performance.
We look forward to continuing to build on this learning throughout the year with our cohesive Wellbeing Program.
Year 11 students attended a 2-day camp at the Stanwell Tops Conference Centre on 15 and 16 February 2024 as part of the compulsory Life Ready Program. The program included a range of activities such as talks by guest speakers, group activities and workshops as well as traditional outdoor camp activities. The seminars covered themes including sexuality and sexual health as well as Respectful and Positive Relationships.
Year 11 students are to be commended for their enthusiasm and high level of engagement throughout the camp.
The year has started smoothly with students settling into classes and working well. It has been a busy start to the year with the completion of Auditions for our Co-Curricular Program and all students are to be congratulated on how they performed in these auditions. Rehearsals have commenced this week, with our Styles Ensemble Rehearsals and Thursday Masterclasses beginning next week, Week 5.
CALLBACK 2023
Last week two of our Dance students from the 2023 HSC Cohort performed at Callback, which is a Showcase of exemplary performances from their Dance practical examinations. Katrina Lai performed her Core Performance and Eva Neville presented her Core Composition, performed beautifully by Isabella Chao.
Congratulations on this amazing achievement !
YEAR 8, 9 & 10 CLASSICAL BALLET
On Monday 19 February our Classical Ballet students were able to attend the Dress Rehearsal of 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland', performed by the Australian Ballet at the Capitol Theatre. This was a wonderful opportunity for our Classical Ballet students to experience a live, professional performance and supported their curriculum as they study and learn repertoire from this Ballet.
Year 10 student, Maya Germain, has been selected to represent Australia at the 2024 Cantanhede FIG International Open Competition for Aerobic Gymnastics, to be held in Cantanhede, Portugal in March. This is a wonderful and elite sporting achievement; NHSPA is very proud and is supporting you every step of the way to the world stage!
We wish you all the very best in your training for the upcoming competition and international trials later this year in Japan and Italy.
Skeletal System in Action!
Year 11 are currently studying 'The Body In Motion' and are learning all about the skeletal, muscular, respiratory and cardiovascular systems, and how they allow and influence movement. It has been great to be getting active in class, practising different muscle contractions, exploring joint actions, labelling our friends bones and muscles, and even testing and comparing the impact of exercise on the respiratory system.
To support learners in developing effective study habits the school will run an after school study centre during term times on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons from 3:25-5:00pm in the school Library.
This is open to all students, providing a quiet environment in which focussed study can take place.
Whilst attendance every week is not compulsory, should your child wish to use this facility it is recommended that they be regular in their attendance for effective learning to occur.
The study centre will be supervised by a staff member between those times to assist learners with organisation, planning and developing successful study habits should they so wish.
This is an excellent opportunity for students to form small study teams to work together to improve their understanding of concepts and spur each other on to achieve a personal best in their subjects.
Expectations for attendance is as follows:
Students
· respect the rights of other learners and so maintain a quiet learning environment
· desire to improve their performance in subjects
· use this time productively
· be regular in attendance
The centre has been shown to be an effective way for improving student’s results, confidence, and organisation in an enjoyable, relaxed environment.
The school provides an opportunity for students to have instrumental and/or vocal lessons at NHSPA with professional tutors. The lessons take place during the school day on a rotational basis so that students do not miss the same class each week. Most lessons are half an hour in duration once a week over each school term.
This opportunity is available to all students enrolled in Newtown High School of the Performing Arts.
You can sign up for the program and access lessons using the link below:
Newtown High School of the Performing Arts offers the opportunity for all students to be involved in the extensive Co-Curricular Program.
Auditions for all Dance, Drama, Music, Film and Technical companies and ensembles have taken place with rehearsals starting in Week 5. Once allocated to a Company or Ensemble, a School Bytes payment item for Company/Ensemble Fees will appear in your School Bytes Portal, and the Company/Ensemble will be reflected in Sentral timetables.
We look forward to celebrating our students during the Showcase Season in Term 2 as well as other performances.
The Co-Curricular Program is the name given to all Dance, Drama, Music, Visual Arts and Technical Companies and Ensembles that run at the school. Entry to these companies is by audition during the first few weeks of Term 1 in 2024. Drama re-auditions students again in term 2 for the Semester 2 Showcase.
