The first two weeks of Term 2 at NHSPA have been wonderful. Students tell me they had great holidays – some travelled to Byron, some to Bali, and some relaxed closer to home. It is always great to see students enjoying seeing their friends again after a break and getting back into their learning. I would like to extend a special welcome to the new students starting at NHSPA this term. NHSPA is a school with a culture of high expectations for learning and high expectations for behaviour. Our learning environment enables students to challenge themselves, set themselves goals and achieve their personal bests.
A massive welcome back to the lucky students who travelled with four dedicated Drama teachers to England over the holidays to be immersed in all things drama, theatre and performance. Thank you to Daniel Kavanagh, Head Teacher Drama, and to Zoe Van Munster, Amy Hardingham and Jose Gonda, for your dedication, in the holidays, to our students.
Monday of Week 1 was a School Development Day. Teachers collaborated in faculties and participated in professional learning focussed on research and pedagogy, and the implementation of the new curriculum. Thank you to Deputy Principal, Nilaufer Rajwar, for leading our professional learning.
The Athletics Carnival at Homebush on Tuesday was an outstanding day. We were lucky the rain mostly held off. Thank you to Abbey Campbell (Sports Coordinator) and the PDHPE Faculty for their excellent organisation of this large whole school event. The Year 12 Versus Teacher Relay was a highlight. Youth won on the day!
Yesterday afternoon and evening we had our Year 8 and Year 9 Parent-Teacher night via TEAMs. It was the first time we had used TEAMs and it went extremely smoothly. These meetings are important as we work in partnership for the best educational outcomes. Thank you to Nilaufer Rajwar for her leadership of these meetings.
Congratulations to our Year 10 Film Students who made some short films for the NSW Student Youth Voices Video Competition and received some individual prizes: Kayla, Jess and Adia for the "CARE" Category & Cooper and Francesca for the "CREATIVITY" Category. They had to create 45 second films that encouraged getting active and made for their peers as audience. And... NHSPA also took out the Schools Prize for the event. We were awarded $500. Well done!
As I write, our Year 11s are finishing their assessment week. Assessments are of course routine at school. High quality student assessment supports teachers to monitor student progress and inform next steps, determine the effectiveness of chosen teaching strategies – both for learning and engagement – and to measure student understanding of a unit of work (Stronge 2002, What Works Best).
Assessment is a core and essential component of teaching and learning programs. Student performance in assessments obviously indicates the level of understanding at that point in time and for the demands of that particular task, but assessments also enable students to reflect on how they approached the task/s. Did they prepare/study sufficiently? Did they manage their time effectively? And later, do they look carefully at the assessment feedback and think about how they can improve for next time? Assessments, whether take home tasks or in class tasks completed under timed conditions, also enable the setting of and reflecting upon personal best goals. If students feel they need more support with managing aspects of their learning they should talk to their teacher, and consider meeting with Mr Adrian Chin our Learning & Support Teacher (LaST).
As always, I am grateful to our incredibly generous and collaborative school community. I am enjoying getting to know more students and their families, and I thank you for your various offers of support and positive feedback. The many performances and exhibitions this term will be a public demonstration and celebration of the incredible skill and talent of our students, and the many ways they are nurtured and inspired by our expert teachers. The performing arts and creativity are our identity, and our long-standing reputation for excellence brings our community together.
I look forward to watching our students shine.

Already, Newtown has held their annual Athletics Carnival where Prefects decided on the Year 12 theme "What do you want to be when you grow up?" An extremely relevant question for seniors as Year 12 charges into the second half of their HSC year.
This week we are busy planning for upcoming whole-school events and the near performance season. Advised by the Seed Team, Prefects are planning their stalls for Multicultural Day and opening discussions about new and innovative school events that we can host during Term 2/3.
After a very successful Term 1, organising the Valentines Day rose drive, publishing new issues of the school newspaper "Newstown", and hosting the annual Talent Quest, we have without a doubt started on a high note for Term 2!
Also during this week, the Prefects and the Year 12 cohort are wishing Year 11 good luck during their first assessment week. We understand this can be a stressful time for students and hope Year 11s are experiencing a smooth transition into their first senior year.
If you have any suggestions/ ideas or feedback for the Prefects, please come and speak to us or fill out this form:

This 1959 photo of Newtown Boys' Junior School shows a full class from Form 3A (Year 9). Looking very neat and tidy in shirt and tie, blazers or knit jumpers, with short back and sides haircuts, some of these boys would have been preparing to leave school and enter the workforce at the end of the year after completing their Intermediate Certificate while others would have chosen to stay on for another year to complete the more common Leaving Certificate at the end of Year 10.
The wooden desks had flip tops where the students' books and pencil cases were kept inside the desk. You can also see a flip down foot rest. As canes were only banned in NSW schools in 1987 (again and finally as late as 1995), these students would have experienced regular disciplinary caning. This photo was taken in F Block and is a copy/paste of many classrooms still in use today.
James Blundell invited NHSPA students and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to join him for the media launch of
Almost Anzac Day
at the Hyde Park Anzac Memorial Auditorium on Friday 12th April.
The new song will raise money for the families of returned service members.
As it gets colder, students will need to wear correct school jumpers or long pants to keep warm.
If a student has extenuating circumstances that prevents them from wearing the correct uniform, a note should be provided to the SWIPE ROOM from a parent/carer BEFORE SCHOOL to receive a uniform pass.
If a student is out of uniform, the class teacher will note this on the roll EACH LESSON. Students will then need to come to the office at RECESS or LUNCH to exchange their out of uniform item for the correct uniform item for the day.
Students who are out of uniform multiple times will receive a note sent to their parents and may incur a possible detention.

Year 7 Parent - Teacher Interviews
The final Year 7 Parent-Teacher interviews (face to face) will be held on Tuesday 28 May (Week 5) from 3.30 pm till 7.00 pm.
All interviews will take place in the gym and G-Block rooms with access via Whitehorse Lane. We hope that these interviews will allow our new parents to meet with teachers to discuss their child’s progress and transition to high school.
Interview bookings can be made through the Sentral parent portal and the booking window opens on Monday 13 May at 9.00 am.
If you have any questions, please email the school.
During the April holidays, 40 of our Senior Drama Students travelled to the United Kingdom visiting Stratford-Upon-Avon and London, as part of a Drama Study Tour organised by our Drama faculty. This was the first overseas excursion we have been able to run since Covid restrictions were lifted and it was a huge undertaking.
In Stratford, students immersed themselves in all things Shakespeare, attending workshops at the Royal Shakespeare Company, attending the latest production of Love's Labours Lost, as well as a talk with the director, and touring a range of historical sites gaining a knowledge and understanding of Shakespeare's life and times.
Then we moved on to London, via the Warner Bros Studio Tour where the students got to see a huge range of different production departments that contributed to creating the magical world of the Harry Potter films. We spent 2 days working with Complicité, Frantic Assembly and an intensive Musical Theatre workshop on the West End. We were also able to attend West End shows and new theatrical works from the National Theatre, as well as tours of the NT and The Theatre Royal, Drury lane, London's oldest continually running theatre.
All in all, it was an amazing experience for our students who have started the term so energised and keen to share all their knowledge with their peers. A huge thank you to Ms Hardingham, Ms Van Munster, Mr Gonda and Mr Kavanagh who gave up their holidays to run this wonderful excursion.
Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP)'s new production of SCAB by Danny Ball and directed by Claudia Osborne features FIVE of our talented students, Chloe Harnisch-Rojas (Yr 9), Eve Guilfoyle O’Rourke (Yr 10), Jasper Reucassel (Yr 12), Scarlett Saunders (Yr 12), and Aurielle Smith (Yr 11), will be performing!
On this day every year the ‘Kappa Crew’ perform a sacred ritual in honour of Amalia’s sister, who died four years ago. They pool their money
to buy flowers, wag fifth period, go to the cemetery and sing ‘All the Small Things’ by Blink 182. But when the crew meet at the start of lunch,
something goes horribly wrong… no one brought any money. No one has any money. A plan is set into motion — scab! The crew splits up in an
attempt to find enough money to buy flowers, but scabbing money at Meadow Ditch High is not the only challenge they face.
Scab is a hilarious tale paying homage to the tenacity of young people who, when confronted with a lack of resources, become infinitely more
resourceful than those around them.
Details of the performance are as follows:
Date: 16–19 May
Time: 6:30PM
Ages: 13+
Duration: 100 Minutes (No Interval)
Price: Single Ticket $35 or 4+ Group Bookings $32.50 (Per Ticket)

In 2006, the NHSPA choir sang the Australian and Greek National Anthems at Darling Harbour to an audience of over 150,000 for the official opening of the inaugural Greek Festival Of Sydney. The festival has since been recognised as one of NSW’s foremost cultural events promoting multiculturalism and diversity. The annual festival launch is attended by Federal, State and local politicians, the Consul General of Greece, members of the media and festival sponsors.
In 2006 and 2008, Zoia and Elspeth, both Year 8 students, won the design for the official program cover for the festival.
After hearing NHSPA rehearsals in a visit to the school in 2018, Dimitris Basis, an internationally renowned Greek singer, collaborated with NHSPA music teacher, Emlyn Lewis-Jones to produce a concert that crossed cultural and language barriers through music as part of the Greek Festival’s program of events for 2019.
Our students rose to the musical challenge and experienced another level of performance offered by participation in a major concert with Greek artists of international acclaim. They were to perform 22 pieces in total that showcased Greek culture and music.
In addition, BYZANTIUM TO ZORBA: A Musical Odyssey, was performed as a collaboration between NHSPA and the Greek Festival to a sellout audience in St George’s Hall.
The program included performances by our dancers, as well as NHSPA student, Arlo Simms, and Dimitris Basis performing a duet. Dimitris Basis was so impressed with this young singer’s talent, that he invited Arlo to sing with him at the City Recital Hall.
Also in attendance was the Consul General of Greece in Sydney, who organised an overseas experience for NHSPA students in Greece to repeat the performance together with students from a prominent Athenian Music High School. But alas, the venture, approved by the Department, had to be abandoned due to COVID!
2021
200 Years: A Celebration of Greek Music
As 2021 marked the 200th Anniversary of the declaration of the War of Independence for Greece from Ottoman rule, a second concert celebrating this historic event, was produced.
200 YEARS: A CELEBRATION OF GREEK MUSIC, which also featured our choir (where students sang in Greek), proved to be even more dynamic, receiving a standing ovation from the audience as well as high acclaim from the media and wider community both here and in Greece!
2024
Music From The Heart
This year on 4 June, NHSPA presents MUSIC FROM THE HEART. The concert’s repertoire, chosen by Dimitris Basis, highlights some of the most profound work created by poets, composers and musicians throughout Greece’s musical history. The concert embodies lyrics and music that evoke a range of human emotions: PATHOS (Passion), PONOS (Pain), AGAPI (Love), APOLIA (Loss), HARRA (Joy), AGONAS (Struggle), ELPIDA (Hope).

We invite you to contribute towards our St George’s Hall Trust Fund.
St George’s Hall and The Studio Theatre are used by all students for year meetings, presentation assemblies, performances and various incursion workshops.
Through the St George’s Hall Trust Fund, the school is able to enhance the Performing and Visual Arts within the school by improving the physical spaces to create 'state of the art' venues, provide scholarships to students, technical equipment, musical instruments, and workshops with industry professionals.
The school is currently looking to install air-conditioning in St George’s Hall and replacing the seating in the Studio Theatre.
We suggest a donation of $200 per year per family. Any amount donated to the St George’s Hall Trust fund is tax deductible.
Donations can be made online through your School Bytes Parent Portal.
On Friday 3 May, Scarlett Saunders from Year 12 and Charlotte Ring from Year 11 attended the Plain English Speaking Award local final No.18 at the Presbyterian Ladies' College in Croydon.
The ten participants who attended were required to deliver a prepared speech on a topic of their choosing, as well as an impromptu speech on an unseen topic. In this round of the competition the topic selected by the adjudicator was ‘red flags’. Both students provided exemplary performances in both categories.
The quality of all performances on the day was of the highest possible calibre and unfortunately Charlotte and Scarlett did not proceed to the next stage of the competition, however, they are to be greatly commended for their participation and effort in this highly rigorous competition.
Well done Charlotte and Scarlett!

On Wednesday 1 May, the Open Boys Football Team competed in their round 3 game
against Georges River College Oatley Senior Campus
It was a very even game, with both teams having a few shots at goal but without luck to score. Early on, keeper Valentino Robins was met with a penalty and without hesitation, fiercely ensured that the score sheet remained empty. Into extra time, the boys were quick to eagerly engage with high spirits, but unfortunately went down to golden goal.
It has been a great run and the team are to be congratulated on their passion, hard work and dedication to training (even organising sessions in the school holidays to ensure fitness and team spirit was not lost). It was great to see the team gel so well and give it their all through the journey.
Well done to all the students, in particular Year 12s, who will call it their final Combined High School sport team!
Team members:
Hugo Zammit (Captain), Zac Allanson, Otis Barnett, Saul Chapman, Miller Corcoran, Rafi Dacol, Marcus Gadzev, Nelson Harris, Harry Kane, James Laird, Mathew Friedrichs, Robin Ludwig, Theo Ratnayake, Valentino Robins, Tobias Schmidt, Phoenix Sequeira, Ben Shachar, Tristan Toledo-Fahey.
During the holidays two of our wonderful Year 12 students were out showcasing what years of hard work and long hours training can achieve.
NHSPA is very proud of both Xavier and Talahn who uphold the school values and are fabulous role models as Sport House Captain and Prefect, participating in every school carnival (and being Age Champion across many years) as well as many CHS knockout teams, gala day and events.
We wish them both the best as they continue to perform on the world stage!
Congratulations also goes to Maya Germain in Year 9 who competed at the Cantanhede International Open (see below)
Xavier Jacks competed at the 2024 Australian Age Championships in QLD. He swam in the 100m butterfly, 400m Individual Medley (finishing 11th - one place away from the final) and 200m butterfly where he did race in the final and has qualified for the Olympic trials later this year!
Talahn Paki competed at the Australian Athletics championships in SA. Talahn qualified for long jump and as a member of the 4x400m relay and came 3rd in the 400m hurdles final.
Competed at the Cantanhede International Open. As part of the junior individual group she placed 10th overall.
Australia overall won one silver medal and one bronze medal.

PARENT ADVICE for Cyber Bullying from the eSafetyCommissioner
Use parental controls: Parental controls are software tools that allow you to monitor and limit what your child sees and does online.
They can be set up to do things like:
Block your child from accessing specific websites, apps or functions (like using a device’s camera, or the ability to buy things).
Filter different kinds of content — such as ‘adult’ or sexual content, content that may promote self-harm, eating disorders, violence, drugs, gambling, racism and terrorism.
Allow you to monitor your child’s use of connected devices, with reports on the sites they visit and the apps they use, how often and for how long.
Set time limits, blocking access after a set time.
If a device or program is shared by multiple members of your family, you should be able change the tool settings to reflect each user’s age and skills.
