Welcome back to the final term of the year. We look forward to a positive and productive final term to the school.
In staffing news, we would like to welcome Ms. Hannah Ingram as our new Head Teacher Teaching and Learning. Ms. Ingram brings great experience and enthusiasm to the role, and we are excited to have her join our school. We look forward to the positive impact she will make in supporting both staff and students in their learning journey.
Term 3 concluded with the excitement of the Year 12 Graduation Ceremony at the Enmore Theatre. It was a truly memorable celebration of our graduating class. The energy of the afternoon was set by WOMP, who led a procession of our students from the school to the theatre, and the ceremony continued to impress with moving speeches and outstanding performances. It was a day filled with reflection, joy, and gratitude, as we farewelled our Year 12 students.
We were privileged to welcome alumna Cecily Hardy as guest speaker. Cecily delivered a heartfelt speech, sharing her own experiences at NHSPA, and the skills she developed during her time here. She encouraged students to remain true to themselves, to embrace resilience in the face of challenges, and to carry forward the lessons of their school years with confidence. Her words of encouragement left a lasting impression on our graduating class as they look to the future.
This memorable event was made possible through the dedication and collaboration of our entire community. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the P&C for their gift of delicious cupcakes, to Ms Ula George for leading the Graduation Committee, and to Ms Christina Argyri for overseeing the administration. Special thanks also go to Ben Turner and the technical crew for their seamless production support, the Performing Arts faculties for their outstanding performances, and to all staff who contributed through rehearsals, backstage support, award presentations, and the many behind-the-scenes details that brought the celebration together.
Year 12 began the written HSC examinations on Thursday 16 October, which continue through until Friday 7 November. All the students have appeared confident, prepared and have approached each exam in a positive manner. We wish them all the very best of luck over this very important time and we are looking forward to some outstanding results over the coming weeks.
We would like to thank the parents of our Year 12 students for the support they have offered their children over this challenging year. We are aware and appreciate that parenting during the HSC year is often a stressful and difficult task. We would also like to reflect on the effort and dedication displayed by every teacher who taught a Year 12 class in 2025. Teachers undertake the HSC every year with their students, and we would like to thank our Year 12 teachers for the guidance and support they have provided each of the students in their classes during this HSC year.
YEAR 11
Year 11 has started their HSC studies this term and all students have received the assessment calendar for Term 4, 2025. The assessment calendar outlines the dates for assessment tasks scheduled in Term 4. An exam timetable will be issued to students later this term which will outline the times and dates of assessment tasks scheduled during the assessment block from 5 December to 11 December.
It is extremely important that students read the contents of the assessment booklet and are aware of their assessment commitments and the processes to follow in regard illness/misadventure or applying for an extension. If, due to an illness or misadventure, a student is unable to attend an assessment task, they must report to Ms. Scanlan immediately upon their return to school . Students will be required to complete the Illness/Misadventure form available on the school’s website or from Ms Scanlan and submit the completed form along with a medical certificate within two days of their return to school. Failure to complete an assessment task or not follow the Illness/Misadventure process may lead to a mark of zero being awarded.
Reports for students in Year 11 will be issued on Friday 7 November at a meeting with their Curriculum Advisers. Yearly reports will be published on the Student and Parent Portal following the Report Interviews. Students by now may be able to decide their pattern of study in the HSC year. It is advised not to make a hasty decision if unsure and instead, maintain 12 units until later in the term. Some students have already made decisions to drop a course, and they have been issued with updated timetables. Students are required to work independently in the Library or Learning Centre during their study periods.
UNIFORM
As we move into the warmer months, we would like to remind all students and families of the importance of wearing the full school uniform every day. Please be reminded that non-uniform items, such as bike shorts, are not permitted as part of the school uniform. Students are expected to wear the complete uniform, including footwear.
Wearing the uniform with pride not only helps in feeling a strong sense of belonging but also reflects commitment to the values and identity of the school. We appreciate the ongoing support of families in reinforcing these expectations and encouraging students to take pride in their school.
YEAR 10 DRAMA PRODUCTION – ANIMAL FARM
From 22 to 24 October, our talented Year 10 Drama students brought George Orwell’s Animal Farm to life in a powerful and thought-provoking production. Their performances showcased not only their exceptional drama skills, but also their maturity in tackling such a significant and challenging text. Congratulations to the cast, crew, and staff who supported this fantastic achievement.
We look forward to a very successful and positive last term of learning and activity for everyone in our community. We hope to see many parents this term during our Semester 2 showcase concert season.

At the end of Term 3, Years 9 and 12 had their final Presentation Assembly together. Our wonderful Year 9 MC's - Evangeline Lee, Sienna Kann, and Luka Foster - led us through a celebration of achievements from the two year groups.
First up, an amazing collaboration between Year 9 and 12 dancers saw Emily Ball and Jessie Kim (Year 9) performing HSC compositions choreographed by Lilli Howell and Jazz Miller, respectively. We were then treated to Rain Sharkey performing their HSC Drama Monologue "Dear Chuck", followed by a parting rendition of 'When the Chips are Down' from the Year 9 Extension Choir.
As a final salutation and to honour the wonderful bond between the two years groups, each Year 12 student received a farewell message from Year 9, wishing them luck for the future.
Thanks to all who were involved in the assembly, including MC's, performers, tech crew and audience.
On behalf of Year 9, Thank You and Farewell Year 12!

YEAR 10 CLASSICAL BALLET SHOW
As part of the Year 10 Classical Ballet course, students organise a production to be performed in front of an audience. Our students have been working hard creating a program, liaising with teachers and the Year 10 Production class (who will assist with the technical requirements), choreographing and deciding on costume and lighting choices to bring the performance to life.
Some Year 8 and 9 Classical Ballet students will perform various class pieces from throughout the year as part of the program.
The internal school performance takes place Tuesday 11 November. Unfortunately this performance is not open to the public, but Year 10 are excited to perform for their teachers and peers.
What a wonderful way to finish the Year 10 Classical Ballet course.

DRAMA
Year 10 Drama at Sydney Theatre Company
Last week, we took 65 Year 10 Drama students to the Wharf Theatre at Walsh Bay to see a performance of "Whitefella Yella Tree" by Dylan Van Den Berg. This play is one of the key texts that our Drama students are studying as part of their course.
This challenging and moving play deals with developing relationship between two young first nations boys against the backdrop of colonisation.
The performance also included a Q and A with the cast and our students were congratulated on their insightful and perceptive questions about the play and the process of staging.
We are very lucky to offer our students these opportunities to engage with contemporary theatre practices and our students were very thankful for the chance to see this great piece of First Nations theatre.

Screen & Media / Film Studies @ NHSPA
This week, two of our VET Certificate III Screen and Media students completed a work placement on the set of Australian Idol. This came as part of a "live on set day" experience from their winnings at the 2024 Bloodfest Film Festival.
They shadowed one of the producers and gained hands-on experience across all areas of the production — from on-set rehearsals and filming, to the dressing and make-up departments, through to the camera operations and scheduling hub.
This placement gave them valuable insight into how a typical day runs in the industry and introduced them to the range of professional roles involved in bringing a live television show to life. It was an important step in their development towards achieving their Cert III Qualification and preparing for future careers in the screen and media industry.
We are thrilled to announce that a number of current and past NHSPA students have had their Film Studies work selected to be showcased at the Sydney Opera House next week!
Their films will feature at a special red-carpet event celebrating the Best of Bloodfest Short Film Festival.
Huge congratulations to our current students and their films:
PURGED: Zoe Richardson, Etti Davies & Nika Desai (Actor Josie Ritter)
and past students whose films from over the years have made the cut to the Opera House:
(Alumni) BLOOD WILL HAVE BLOOD: Toby Makeham, Stella O'Brien (featuring Carmen Rolfe)
(Alumni) BLOOD CALL: Asha Harris-Cohen
(Alumni) RAW: Mia Wolczak
(Alumni) PINS & NEEDLES: Lillian Harris
(Alumni) GREEN SMOOTHY: Alyson Rudlin
and past students for their incredible achievements — as well as all the cast and crew involved in their productions.

The NSW Public Schools State Drama Festival is a celebration of classroom and co-curricular Drama. In very exciting news this year, student short films will be featured alongside the live ensemble performances for the first time. The festival will highlight the amazing creative work from students and schools across the state, recognising the talents and achievements of public school students across NSW.
We’re thrilled to announce that River, a film created by two of our Year 10 Film Studies students, Alec Compton and Maud Destoop, has been selected to represent NHSPA at this year’s State Drama Festival.
River is a clever mockumentary that explores what happens when we become too absorbed in the digital world and lose sight of the richness of real-life experiences. Congratulations to the talented filmmakers on this outstanding achievement!

DRAMA ALUMNI NEWS
Charlie White (Class of 2024) is currently performing in 'The Laramie Project' at New Theatre. By all accounts this is a very moving production of this groundbreaking verbatim play (which, incidentally, Charlie studied in Ms Hoddinott's HSC class!) and Charlie's performance is superb. In his review, Benjamin Webb from The Scoop says "19-year-old Charlie White gives Jedadiah Schultz a sense of moral growth that is sincerely affecting." The New Theatre are quite literally our neighbours so do check out the production - tickets available via New Theatre.
A group of our 2024 HSC Drama Students now studying at the University of Sydney are the talented and dynamic creatives behind a new production of Van Badham's hilarious play Banging Denmark at SUDS (Sydney Uni Dramatic Society). Notice regarding The Arts Unit Initiatives and Schools Spectacular
Initiatives offered via the Arts Unit are developed to provide performing arts opportunities to students of NSW Public Education schools statewide.
At Newtown High School of the Performing Arts, a specialist, selective entry performing arts high school in Dance, Music and Drama, we offer numerous enrichment and extension opportunities in the Performing Arts to develop the talents of our gifted students.
For a student at NHSPA to be eligible to apply for an Arts Unit initiative, they must receive the school's endorsement. This will usually be given by a Head Teacher and confirmed by the Principal.
Parents looking at opportunities for their students through the Arts Unit should get in touch with the relevant Faculty Head Teacher for guidance in this matter before seeking endorsement from NHSPA and submitting an application for Arts Unit programs.
Parents and students should be familiar with NHSPA's Dance, Drama and Music general co-curricular policies. Familiarity with these policies in tandem with consulting the faculty Head Teachers will ensure the best contextual understanding regarding opportunities for our talented students.

THANK YOU NHSPA STAFF FOR EVERYTHING YOU DO
The annual NHSPA P&C STAFF THANK YOU LUNCH was held on Wednesday 17 September 2025.

YEAR 12 LEAVERS
ATTENTION 2025 YEAR 12 STUDENTS
While a student is enrolled in a NSW Public School, they are allocated user credentials that provide them with access to email, student portal, Google Workspaces and Microsoft Office 365. They can access these services for free both while at school and from home - or anywhere else.
BUT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THEY LEAVE?
Students need to be informed that from the date they leave an NSW Public School - i.e., when the school has marked them as a Leaver in ERN - they have 180 days before they lose access to:
Their school email account (GMail)
Their Google Drive contents
Any Google Classrooms they were joined to
Their Microsoft OneDrive contents
Any Microsoft Teams they were a member of
So, from the time that they leave, they have 180 days to check all their content/files in these school-provided services and download anything that they need to keep. There is no need to delete what they do not wish to keep. Anything left in their cloud repositories after the 180 days will no longer be accessible to them.

On 16 October, Beatrix Nagy (Year 9) and Maya Brock (Year 7) attended the cohort finals of the Metropolitan South and Metropolitan South and West Public Speaking Competition.
Their self-chosen topics were “Kid Influencing” and “Sexism within Modern Society”, respectively. Both students performed exceptionally well, with Maya placing second and progressing to the finals later in November.
Well done to both students for representing NHSPA with great enthusiasm and pride.
Congratulations to the winners of our Microstory Competition, Rose Morris, Altai Lenn, Stella Chapman-Murphy and Caitlin Jones!
In just a 100-words or less, these writers managed to convey whole worlds. Here is Altai Lenn's touching piece, One True Love.
One True Love
By Altai Lenn
I saw her yesterday, and I saw her again last night, but it had only been a dream…
She smiled at me and I smiled back; do dreams correlate to reality?
Once in the hallway we passed each other and exchanged greetings, could this start something? The next day only silence existed between us.
My only happiness existed in my dreams. We would eat every night, flavourless food but I liked it, although imaginary.
A quiet life, par a few times. One time we went to the mountains, I was wagging my tail.
Until she went away and never came back.
HSIE
11 Geography Excursion to Cabramatta
On the final Monday of Term 3, the Year 11 Geography class boarded the train bound for Cabramatta. The focus of the day was to investigate the topic of People, patterns and processes with an emphasis on ‘Place and cultural change’.
For many on the excursion, it was their first time exploring this part of Sydney. Judging by the reaction of the students on arrival, they were in for a rich cultural experience over the next few hours. The sights, sounds and smells were unlike many that are experienced in the inner west suburbs of Sydney, and it really was like being transported to another country with the dominant Vietnamese culture providing a wonderful environment for the students to explore.
Some of the aspects the excursion centred around were the historical background of Cabramatta, cultural locations such as religious sites and local markets as well as a challenge whereby the students had to find and photograph a series of fruits, vegetables and meats/ seafoods that they had never seen before. They were also asked to try a food or drink product they had never tasted before (being allergy aware of course) and to respectfully interview a local member of the community about the significance of various aspects of Cabramatta life to them.
The students were, once again, a fantastic group to take out on excursion and represented themselves and the school in exemplary fashion. They all seemed to find it fascinating to get out of their usual bubble/comfort zone and see what exists in different parts of this hugely diverse city of ours. Congratulations to all students involved on a great day out and the adventurous spirit with which they approached the investigation.

Our Year 12 Design and Technology students have completed their impressive HSC Major Design Projects, demonstrating creativity, innovation, and outstanding problem-solving skills.
Each project reflects months of research, prototyping, and refinement — showcasing the students’ ability to turn ideas into real-world solutions.
A special congratulations to Sensuki Seki, whose innovative project, a wearable device that detects and corrects a violinist’s posture through gentle vibration alerts, has earned him a SHAPE nomination.
This recognition celebrates excellence in design, and Sensuki’s work stands out for its thoughtful integration of technology and user experience.
Well done to all our Year 12 Design and Technology students on their achievements and dedication throughout the year. Your hard work and creativity have truly shone!
The Annual NHSPA Year 12 Fashion Show was an amazing showcase of the hard work from our graduating Year 12 textiles students. They worked tirelessly on their garments, and the show was full of excitement. It was such a rewarding way to bring their designs to life with models on the runway. As a special treat to finish, we enjoyed a fantastic performance from our very own in-house drag queen, Christian Kotevski.
A big congratulations to Ophelia, Lulu Burns, Tess Clark, Kyla Diffin, Erin Doyle, Mimi Gale, Alice Klinder, Christian Kotevski, Katie Li, Grace McAllister, Ava Petrovski, Paddy Quilter-Jones, Safi Reza, Jack Ruwald, Tamara Swissa, Louise Thao Dao, Ela Turgutoglu, and Kiara Waring- we are so proud of you all!
A special shout-out goes to Ava Petrovski, whose outstanding garment highlighting the beauty of nature and decay earned her a nomination for the Shape Award. This is a huge achievement and a true testament to her creativity and skill.
SCIENCE
Here's a peek at what our students are up to at the start of Term 4!
Year 7s had their first glimpse of the microscopic world this week. There was plenty of curiosity as students learned how to prepare their own slides and focus their microscopes to discover a new unseen world!
Our Year 8 students have been learning about atoms and molecules, discovering how all matter is made up of tiny particles joined together in different ways. This week they collaborated in groups to form 3D models of molecules, and had fun presenting their findings to the rest of the class, displaying a great mix of science and creativity!
PDHPE & SPORT
Year 7 Gala Day
The annual Year 7 Sports Gala Day was a highlight for the end of Term 3! After each student selected their preferred sport, students ventured off to various venues around the Inner West for some friendly competion games against other schools in the Bligh Zone region (Tempe HS, Strathfield Girls HS, Sydney Secondary College and Marrickville HS). Year 9 and 10 PASS elective students volunteered their time and sporting expertise to coach and umpire the games (approx 5 for each team). Year 7 students were to be commended for their positive attitude and enthusiam across the multiple sports. In Year 8, students will have the same opportunity, just with different sports.

Our boys' basketball team had an exciting and competitive day at Tempe High School, taking on four other schools in a round of tough matchups.
We kicked off the day with a nail-biting 1-point loss to Blackwattle High, followed by a hard-fought game against Tempe High, where we went down by 10 points. From there, the team found their rhythm and bounced back strongly defeating both Balmain and Dulwich Hill by solid margins of at least 10 points each.
These victories earned us a place in the semi-finals, where we faced Blackwattle again. After leading in the first half, the game came down to the wire, but we narrowly missed out with a 3-point loss.
Despite the result, it was a fantastic day filled with determination, team spirit, and great sportsmanship from all players. A special congratulations to Cameron Hamilton, who was named MVP for his outstanding performance throughout the tournament!
Well done to all involved!
U15's Football friendly matches against Alexandria Park Community School
Two of our teams headed to Perry Park Oval for a day of soccer matches against Alexandria Park Community School. It was a fantastic day out, filled with spirited competition and school pride.
The girls' team delivered an impressive performance, securing a 6–2 victory, showing great teamwork and determination. The boys' team faced a tough challenge and, despite their best efforts, finished with a 7–2 loss. Both matches were played with intensity and enthusiasm, although a few yellow cards were handed out on both sides—reminding us all of the passion that sport can bring!
Congratulations to our MVPs of the day:
🏆 Ruby Naylor-Macnish for the girls’ team
🏆 Charles Stewart for the boys’ team
Year 12 Health & Movement Science
Year 11 2025 students have just started studying the first ever Year 12 HMS course! This is the first change since 2012!
Students are looking forwards to studying TWO topics over the next year:
Training for improved performance
Health in an Australian and global context
To begin the course, students are exploring the importance of pre-exercise assessments, testing and questionnaires to provide safe, valid, reliable and purposeful training methods for recreational and elite athletes. We even took some time to complete our own reaction time test using BlazePods. Congratulations to Freya on having the fastest reaction time - class champion!
Year 10 Physical Activity & Sport Studies (PASS) Shark Tank
For their final assessment task of the subject, Year 10 took on the role of business entrepreneur to create a new product or event for a target audience. Students have collaboratively developed a product pitch, research and finally presented to the Sharks... Ms Campbell, Ms Holland and Ms Hammond.
Some very unique and interesting ideas were pitched to the investing Sharks, including helmets that could hydrate athletes during training and games (also preventing from CTE), seniors programs that delivered exercise and fitness circuits across the country in aged care facilities and sunscreen that includes vital minerals and vitamins that can be absorbed through the skin on application.

LIBRARY - Dr Trish Kennedy
On Tuesday 21 October, a number of Year 7 and 8 students engaged in a market research and book selection organised by the library. The one period incursion began with students evaluating the appeal of a selection of books from the current collection, noting the impact of the title, blurb, cover and genre on their interest levels. Unsurprisingly, the image on the book’s front cover was the overwhelming factor in influencing selection.
Then students boarded the Sydney Book Bus to select books for library purchase. Indeed, the enthusiastic crew was thoroughly gleeful at the prospect of a spending spree on behalf of the library. Of course all those involved will be offered the first opportunity to borrow once the books have been delivered and processed.
The incursion was concluded with a delicious feast of pizza, baked from scratch by our excellent school canteen.
WELLBEING
GENERATION CONNECT
Generation Connect is a partnership program between NHSPA and the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre. Students volunteer their time to give back to the local community by spending time with older people.
There are many benefits to intergenerational connection — older community members look forward to visits from the students, and both groups gain a great deal from the experience. The program helps to reduce the stigma often associated with ageing and youth, while fostering understanding, empathy, and community connection.
Throughout the year, the group visits the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre to take part in wellbeing activities and games with seniors from the local area.
Students who would like to get involved are encouraged to speak with the SSO to sign up as a volunteer.
A big thank you to the students who already participate and continue to make such a positive difference in the lives of the older people they spend time with!
RAISE Mentoring Graduation
We are proud to congratulate the students who have recently graduated from the RAISE Mentoring program.
Over the past two terms, these students have shown commitment and growth as they engaged in mentoring sessions designed to strengthen their wellbeing, build positive connections, and recognise their unique potential and strengths. Their achievements reflect the effort they have put into developing resilience, confidence, and leadership in their school journey.
RAISE Mentoring is one of the school's wellbeing programs provides students with the opportunity to be guided and supported by mentors who encourage them to reflect, grow, and thrive both at school and beyond.
Congratulations to our graduates on their achievements !
&
Thank you to the mentors and staff who have supported them throughout this journey
PCYC Street Art Program
Congratulations to our Year 8 and 9 students who successfully completed a 7-week Street Art workshop in partnership with Marrickville PCYC.
Students were guided by a local Sydney graffiti artist to create a mural that will be proudly displayed at the Marrickville PCYC. Throughout the program, they had the opportunity to learn from a professional artist while also exploring how to engage with this art form in a safe and positive way.
The students produced an outstanding piece of artwork that showcases their creativity and teamwork. We thank the students for their efforts, and extend our gratitude to PCYC and the local artist who generously gave their time and expertise to support this project.

To support learners in developing effective study habits the school will run an after-school study centre during term times on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday afternoons from 3:25pm-5:00pm in the school Library.
This is open to all students, providing a quiet environment in which focussed study could take place.
Whilst attendance every week is not compulsory, should your child wish to use this facility, it is recommended that they be regular in their attendance for effective learning to occur.
The study centre will be supervised by a staff member between the times above to assist learners with organisation, planning, and developing successful study habits should they so wish.
This is an excellent opportunity for students to form small study teams to work together to improve their understanding of concepts and spur each other on to achieve a personal best in their subjects.
Expectations for attendance are as follows:
Students
respect the rights of other learners and so maintain a quiet learning environment.
desire to improve their performance in subjects.
use this time productively.
be regular in attendance.
The centre has been shown to be an effective way for improving students' results, confidence, and organisation in an enjoyable, relaxed environment.

Dear Parents and Carers,
Outstanding account payment notices are being sent out to all Year 12 families. We would appreciate the finalising of any overdue payments as soon as possible.
The government funds NSW schools to operate at a very basic level. Most of the global funding the school receives pays for teacher salaries, leave entitlements, basic school maintenance and basic teaching and technology resources.
We rely on and value your contributions and thank you for supporting your child's education in this way.
Our school has implemented a system called SCHOOL BYTES to manage payments.
Parents/carers can visit the School Bytes Parent Portal at any time to make a payment online, view payment history and apply credit. For non-student payments, please contact the school for a payment link.

TAX DEDUCTABLE DONATIONS
Newtown High School of the Performing Arts has been very fortunate since its establishment in 1990 to enjoy the extra support of parents, carers, our alumni, and the wider community.
We are delighted to announce the establishment of the Newtown High School of the Performing Arts School Library Fund.
Together with the St George’s Hall Trust Fund, which was established in 1993, there is now a second tax deductible way our community can contribute to the school.
Tax deductible donations to these funds greatly contribute to the provision of the best educational opportunities and facilities for our students and community.
TAX DEDUCTIBLE DONATIONS
1. St George’s Hall Trust Fund Performing Arts Donation
This donation is to support the school’s performing and visual arts endeavours. We suggest a donation of $200 per year per family or any amount which is tax deductible through our St George’s Hall Trust Fund. Each year donations provide funding for technical equipment, musical instruments and professional industry workshops for students which enrich our programs and extend students’ opportunities. Donation(s) may be made on the Statement of Account or Parent Portal.
2. Library Fund Donation
The Library Fund is a new tax-deductible fund established in 2025. Library Fund donations will be used for the following:
new books
computer/software and hardware
library furniture such as bookshelves, booth seating, library displays and archival preservation
Donations made to the St George’s Hall Trust Fund or the school Library Fund are fully tax-deductible as charitable contributions under the ATO provisions.
OTHER DONATIONS
1. School Donation
If you would like to make a general donation to the school, please include the amount you wish to donate at the designated section via the School Bytes Statement of Account which will be emailed to you in the beginning of Term 1. Please note, this donation is not tax deductible. Donation(s) may be made on the Statement of Account or Parent Portal.
2. NHSPA P&C Donation
The P&C relies on voluntary fundraising donations as their primary means of fundraising. We suggest a donation of $50.00 per year per family. Funds collected are allocated to fund items or projects in consultation with the school. P&C members support the school to ensure our children have the very best educational opportunities possible and our aim, when allocating funds, is to have whole of school impact.
The P&C works with the school to identify and implement specific funding for a variety of initiatives. One such initiative was the purchase of mega decking, consisting of stage legs and braces, which were used for the 2023 production of the Musical ‘Sweeney Todd’ and ‘Legally Blonde’ in 2025. In 2025 a laser cutter for the TAS faculty was partially funded through the P&C. Other items purchased in the past include the new school bell, PA security system and large fan in the gym.
The Role of the Anti-Racism Contact Officer (ARCO)
in Our School
At Newtown High School of the Performing Arts, we are dedicated to ensuring an inclusive, respectful, and equitable environment where every student feels safe and valued. A critical component of this commitment is the role of our Anti-Racism Contact Officer (ARCO).
Who is the ARCO?
The ARCO at Newtown High School of the Performing Arts is Mr. Aflal Sahabdeen. The ARCO is a specially trained staff member who supports students, staff, and families in understanding, addressing, and preventing racism within our school community. Their work ensures our school remains a welcoming space for all, regardless of background.
What does the ARCO do?
Provides Support: Offers guidance to those experiencing or witnessing racism and ensures concerns are handled appropriately.
Promotes Education & Awareness: Leads initiatives, workshops, and discussions to foster respect, understanding, and inclusion.
Implements Policies: Enforces the NSW Department of Education’s anti-racism policies, ensuring all complaints are managed fairly and effectively.
Monitors & Reports: Tracks trends and collaborates with school leadership to develop strategies that prevent racism and promote inclusivity.
Engages with the Community: Works with parents, local groups, and external organisations to extend anti-racism efforts beyond the classroom.
Why Does This Role Matter?
Racism has no place in our school or society. The ARCO helps create a positive, supportive learning environment where every student can thrive. By promoting awareness, understanding, and respect, we strengthen our school’s values and commitment to equity.
How Can You Get Support?
If you experience or witness racism or would like to learn more about anti-racism initiatives, our ARCO, Mr. Aflal Sahabdeen, is here to help. You can reach out confidentially for support, guidance, and resources.
For further information about the ARCO role and anti-racism education, visit the NSW Department of Education website:
https://education.nsw.gov.au/teaching-and-learning/multicultural-education/anti-racism-education
Together, let’s continue building a school community that celebrates diversity and stands against racism.

SAFE INTERNET
PARENT ADVICE for Cyber Bullying from the eSafetyCommissioner
Use parental controls: Parental controls are software tools that allow you to monitor and limit what your child sees and does online.
They can be set up to do things like:
Block your child from accessing specific websites, apps or functions (like using a device’s camera, or the ability to buy things).
Filter different kinds of content — such as ‘adult’ or sexual content, content that may promote self-harm, eating disorders, violence, drugs, gambling, racism and terrorism.
Allow you to monitor your child’s use of connected devices, with reports on the sites they visit and the apps they use, how often and for how long.
Set time limits, blocking access after a set time.
If a device or program is shared by multiple members of your family, you should be able change the tool settings to reflect each user’s age and skills.
