Influences are all around us. We are influenced by a variety of factors such as people, current situations, previous experiences and various forms of media.
Download the 'lesson one - what influences me?' worksheet using either the MS Word (docx 75KB) or Google Doc icon.
Complete the worksheet to explore who and what influences your decisions, behaviours and attitudes in a positive and negative way.
Contextual factors are characteristics or features that are evident and unique to an individual, group or community. They can influence and impact a person’s ability to make informed decisions.
Contextual factors are:
individual – knowledge, skills, attitudes, beliefs, ability, sex, gender
sociocultural – religion, parents/carers, family, media, culture, peers, language, politics
socioeconomic – education, income, employment
environmental – geographical location, access to health services.
Use the see, think, wonder table in the Worksheet- lesson one - what influences me? to record observations about your influences.
See – what do you notice about each contextual factor? For example, I am impacted mostly by socio-cultural factors. You may wish to consider why this is the case.
Think – which of the four contextual factors is highlighted the most on your sheet? Why do you think this is the case?
Wonder – how would these influences change if you were dealing with another world issue. For example, climate change, educational inequality or mental health concerns.
Consider your greatest influence now during the COVID-19 world issue.
Predict if this would be the same influence for another emerging world issue that impacts young people? Why or why not? Give reasons for your answer in at least one paragraph.
