Developing health literacy skills through the critique of health messages attached to current issues will support students to become positive consumers and producers of information and responsible citizens. Through this sequence, students will explore the influence of media on the health, safety and wellbeing of the wider community.
During these lessons, students will:
value the importance of their role as responsible consumers and producers of information.
analyse the role the media plays in educating the community and supporting community health
think critically about the production of reality TV shows and identify how editors and producers manipulate characters to influence our views
assess the suitability of physical activities for physical and mental health benefits and lifestyle.
Identify a range of media sources that can provide valid and reliable health information.
Explain the credibility of media messages they are exposed to.
Discuss reality TV shows and their impact on our views of what is real.
Describe the impact of reality tv show appearance on the mental and social health of one contestant.
Participate in a mental fitness activity and assess its suitability for a personal mental fitness plan.
Create material for a campaign to raise the awareness for young people of the value of reliable and credible sources of health information OR media literacy and the influence of the media on mental health and perceptions of reality.

Students will identify a range of media sources that can provide valid and reliable health information. They will create a checklist designed for young people to use to identify appropriate, accurate and reliable sources of health information.
PD4-6 recognises how contextual factors influence attitudes and behaviours and proposes strategies to enhance health, safety, wellbeing and participation in physical activity
Students will explore reality tv shows and their impact on our views of what is real. They will think critically about the production of reality tv shows and identify how editors and producers manipulate characters to influence our views. Students will investigate the impact of appearing on reality TV shows on the mental and social health of one contestant. They will also participate in a mental fitness activity of their choice to experience physical and mental benefits.
