Overview

During these lessons, students will explore the nature of the production and consumption of Australian macadamias with a focus on the extent of the industry in Queensland and New South Wales. This initial sequence is designed to introduce students to the interconnections of production and consumption and revisit geographical graphing skills and interpretation of data. 

Learning intentions:   

• develop an understanding of the link between production, consumption and sustainability  

• develop an understanding of the social, economic and environmental impacts of production and consumption.  

Success criteria:  

• apply understanding of sustainable management to production and consumption of Australian macadamias 

• apply their understanding of production and consumption to explain the nature and extent of global macadamia industry.  

Syllabus content: 

• Investigate the effects of production and consumption of goods on people, places and environments throughout to world, for example: (ACHGK068) 

• examination of environmental, social and economic impacts of production and consumption of consumer goods. 

• assessment of the effect of production or consumption of goods on ONE place or environment 

• explanation of responses by governments, groups and individuals to minimise the effects of production and consumption. 

Outcomes:

In this lesson, students will develop an understanding of Australia’s macadamia industry by locating and mapping the major production locations in Australia. They will the explore the increase in production of Australian macadamias and develop a graph to illustrate current data.

In this lesson, students will use current data to identify the export locations and extent of Australian macadamia exports to the global market. They will then explore the use of Australian macadamias nationally and globally.

In this lesson, students will clarify their understanding of sustainability and develop knowledge and understanding of the sustainability of Australia macadamia production and consumption.
