Overview

In this learning sequence students will be introduced to the interconnections of travel. They will develop their knowledge and understanding of reasons why people travel, the trends associated with travel and how travel has changed across time.   

During these lessons, students will explore changing trends in travel through the use of primary research and analysis of results. 

Learning intentions:   

• understand the reasons why travel occurs  

• understand how travel has changed in Australia 

• understand patterns and trends associated with travel in Australia and globally through the geographical inquiry tools 

Success criteria:  

• apply knowledge of data analysis and geographical inquiry and explain trends in travel over time.  

Syllabus content: 

• Investigate the influences on and effects of, people’s travel and recreational, cultural or leisure connections with different places for the future, for example: (ACHGK065, ACHGK069) 

• analysis of patterns and trends in people’s travel, recreational, cultural and/or leisure activities 

• examination of the impact of people’s travel, recreational, cultural and/or leisure activities on the future of places 

• explanation of the impacts of a selected travel, recreational, cultural or leisure activity on a place, implications for the future of that place and strategies to achieve sustainability. 

Outcomes:  

• GE4-2 describes processes and influences that form and transform places and environments  

• GE4-7 acquires and processes geographical information by selecting and using geographical tools for inquiry 

• GE4-8 Communicates geographical information using a variety of strategies 

Students will be introduced to the reasons why people travel through a geographical inquiry and associate results to their knowledge and understanding of patterns and trends associated with travel.  

Content: 

• Investigate the influences on and effects of, people’s travel and recreational, cultural or leisure connections with different places for the future, for example: (ACHGK065, ACHGK069) 

• analysis of patterns and trends in people’s travel, recreational, cultural and/or leisure activities.

• GE4-7 acquires and processes geographical information by selecting and using geographical tools for inquiry 

• GE4-8 communicates geographical information using a variety of strategies 

Students will develop their knowledge and understanding of travel patterns through a comparative study of international and domestic travel over the past forty years. 

Content: 

• Investigate the influences on and effects of people’s travel and recreational, cultural or leisure connections with different places for the future, for example: (ACHGK065, ACHGK069) 

• analysis of patterns and trends in people’s travel, recreational, cultural and/or leisure activities. 

Outcomes:  

• GE4-3 explains how interactions and connections between people, places and environments result in change 

• GE4-8 communicates geographical information using a variety of strategies 

Students will analyse contemporary trends in Australian travel patterns through interpreting statistics and graphs, drawing conclusions from data about the changing nature of travel in Australia and globally.
