This sequence of lessons completes the learning from home unit ‘Writing matters’, which is designed to extend students' understanding of writing with purpose and for an audience, focusing specifically on writing a persuasive piece. During these lessons students will complete a writing task. They will engage in the writing process: drafting, editing and publishing their persuasive writing about a topic which matters to them.
Students will:
plan their ideas to consider how they will write a persuasive paragraph representing their viewpoint in a measured and authentic way
draft a paragraph - use their understanding of the structural features of a persuasive paragraph to develop their ideas
use the rhetorical triangle to edit their writing, ensuring the paragraph remains focused on their purpose and audience
make deliberate choices during the editing phase about the effectiveness of the language devices used throughout the response
use a checklist during the editing phase to assess the clarity and cohesion of the argument
publish the response.

During this lesson, students will plan their response to a guided writing task. This planning will be structured using a series of templates which are designed to display students’ understanding of persuasive writing. This includes: how to structure a persuasive paragraph; how to plan for using language devices; how to use language features to achieve their purpose.

The activities in this lesson are designed to help students revise their writing and engage in the process of editing. They will be using a variety of editing tools to ensure their paragraph effectively, purposely and accurately reflects the persuasive idea they have focused on.

edit their writing using one checklist for ideas and purpose and another for the mechanics of writing.
