Motion can occur over a wide range of distances. There might be the 100 m sprint at your athletics carnival or the Bathurst 1000 km car race.
Taking accurate distance measurements is important for calculating speed accurately.
One way we can use is via Google Maps.
Look at the example shown in the embedded Google Slide.
The first slide shows you the direct distance from the Taronga Zoo to the Sydney Harbour Bridge is 2.76 km. We call this displacement.
Now look at the second slide. If you drove by car the distance travelled would be 7.7 km.
Note: When you take this trip by car the distance is 7.7 km but your displacement is 2.76 km.
Now it's your turn,

Find a landmark you know and right click and then click measure distance.
Move to a nearby landmark, right click, then click, distance to here.
Record your distance.
For the same 2 points, find out the distance a car would need to take.
Complete this task twice for the measurement between two other landmarks of your choosing, anywhere in the world.
Next, measure the distances of a variety of paths or objects in your house. A path might be the distance from your bedroom to the fridge. Try to use, when appropriate, mm, cm and m units. Two examples are given for you. Try to determine 6 more.

Brainstorm some ways that you can record time at your home.
Choose one of these methods to measure the time between the start and finish positions for a variety of objects.
For example, the time it takes for a toy car to stop rolling, the time for a paper aeroplane to land after being thrown, the time for Nerf bullet to hit the ground.
Complete each three times and take an average.
Try to record the time of one long event.
For example, a walk to the end of the street. Record this event in minutes.
Record all your results, for each example, in the table in the Google Doc activity.
Make sure you have at least five measurements including your walk.
