The World Health Organisation works worldwide to promote health, keep the world safe, and serve the vulnerable.
Gaming disorder has been included in the WHO’s classifications of diseases. Once it is aware of an issue, we can make it known to the wider community.
Positive and effective calls to action on keeping it real and healthy could make the difference for someone else.
During this lesson, you will:
build understanding on the WHO’s response to gaming
learn about what makes a successful public service announcement (PSA)
create, publish and share your own PSA on healthy video gaming for young people.
The World Health Organisation works worldwide to promote health, keep the world safe, and serve the vulnerable. WHO released a new International Classification of Diseases (IDC). The ICD is the foundation for identifying health trends and statistics worldwide, and contains around 55 000 unique codes for injuries, diseases and causes of death. It provides a common language that allows health professionals to share health information across the globe. Recently, WHO has released statement about something called "gaming disorder"
Read the WHO statement here – Inclusion of “gaming disorder” in ICD-11 (who.int)
Now reflect in your PDHPE workbook
What are the reasons for the inclusion of ‘gaming disorder’ in the ICD?
What are the other health concerns associated with gaming behaviour?
If gaming disorder impacts only a small proportion of the population, why should it be included within this list of diseases?
Add some more information to your PMI chart
A public service announcement (PSA) is a message in the public interest distributed by the media to raise public awareness and support behaviour change. PSA's are sent as ready-to-air audio or video files, for radio or television, or can be a script that their announcers can read live on the air. They can be done very simply with a single actor reading or performing a message, or they can be elaborate, slickly-produced messages with music, dramatic storylines, and sound or visual effects.
Using what you've learned so far about healthy video gaming, the brain, recommendations for sedentary screen time and the gaming industry.
Create a public service announcement (PSA) that presents evidence regarding healthy gaming recommendations and a simple action plan for people your age.
Use the information you have collected on your PMI chart
Watch the Don’t Be A Holiday Super Spreader public service announcement from WHO as an example.
Your PSA final product can take any form you want – digital, analogue, video, web page, flyer.
Your peers are your audience.
A PSA normally includes:
a call to action,
statements on why the issue is important
the immediate risk of inaction and
the offer of a solution or recommendation.
Consider the following:
what information and evidence will you include in your PSA to persuade your audience
how will you identify the risks of not balancing video gaming with physical activity as part of a balanced lifestyle?
why should people take notice of your solution or recommendations? How convincing can you be?
