Through this learning sequence you will plan, implement and critique physical activity options for yourself and others aimed at improving or maintaining your health and fitness levels. You will investigate the physical activity opportunities which exist in your local area, with a focus on the natural environment. You will investigate and experience the health and wellbeing benefits of connecting with and participating in activities in the natural environment.
You will consider your own needs and the needs of young people to design or adapt an activity with minimal equipment to be completed in the natural environment within your area. You will reflect on the effectiveness of your activity to enhance young people’s ability to be physically active and improve their health and fitness.
During these lessons’ students will:
explore opportunities to be physically active in your local area
investigate the health benefits of being physically active in the outdoors and natural environment
create or adapt an activity which incorporates the natural environment, uses minimal equipment and is designed to improve health, wellbeing and fitness
reflect on and evaluate the effectiveness of your activity to improve health, wellbeing and fitness and enhance a lifetime of physical activity for young people.
Success criteria for the overall sequence
Identify ways for young people to be physically activity in the natural environment.
Create or adapt an activity which incorporates the natural environment, uses minimal equipment and is designed to improve health, wellbeing and fitness.
Compare the benefits of being active indoors and outdoors.

During this lesson, students will investigate the physical activity opportunities which exist in their local area, with a focus on the natural environment. For example, spaces available and activities that suit the space, times, days, age groups, resources needed and strategies for motivation. They will explore the health and wellbeing benefits of connecting with and participating in activities in the natural environment.
Outcomes:
PD5-7 plan, implements and critiques strategies to promote health, safety, wellbeing and participation in physical activity in their communities
Students will consider their own needs and the needs of young people to design or adapt a workout sequence with minimal equipment to be completed in the natural environment within their local area. They will design or adapt the activity ready for participation, evaluation and sharing.
Students will participate in the activity on their own or with a buddy and video it if they can. They will self reflect and use the criteria to critique the effectiveness of their activity to enhance young people’s ability to be physically active and improve their health and fitness.

Students will advocate for the importance of participating in physical activity in the natural environment, with the hope of encouraging and changing young people’s attitudes to being physically active in the outdoors.
