During these lessons, students will explore the significant events and experiences of Australians at Kokoda. They will learn about the strategic position of Port Moresby and examine the topography of the Kokoda Track. Students will examine conditions in Kokoda and how this impacted the fighting. Students will engage in readings about the conditions and examine sources to gain a deeper understanding of the topic. They will analyse sources and consider the extent to which the local Papuans who assisted the Australian Army (known as Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels) shaped the experiences of Australian soldiers at Kokoda through the creation of a written piece.
Learning intentions:

Students will learn about the importance of Kokoda in the Australian war experience. They will examine sources, including photographs and cross-sections of the Kokoda Track to understand how the terrain affected the fighting and living conditions for soldiers.

Students will write 3-4 paragraphs about the conditions of Kokoda and the physical and emotional impact it would have had on the soldiers.

Finally, students will text examining the extent to which the indigenous Papuans who aided the Australians (Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels) shaped the experiences of Australians at Kokoda.
