During these lessons, students will explore wartime controls implemented by the Australian government. These controls included rationing, restrictions and propaganda. Students will consider sources for their messages and their effectiveness. In the final lesson of the sequence, students will learn about censorship by examining events that occurred in Australia and the censorship issues surrounding them. Students will analyse sources for their usefulness, considering the role of media in today’s society and the government’s ability to control information.

In this lesson, students will learn about events that occurred in Australia that were censored by the Australian government. Students will examine sources to determine the usefulness of newspapers as a source, given the censorship laws. Students will reflect on the ways historians can overcome censorship issues when studying historical events, as well as changes in the media today and how this affects the consumption of information.
