As the world’s urban population increases, the need to build sustainable cities becomes even more important. According to the United Nations, “managing urban areas has become one of the most important development challenges of the 21st century”.
In this series of lessons, students will use their research into elements of sustainable city design from last week to design their own sustainable city. All 3 lessons will be spent on this design. Where technology allows for remote learning students to collaborate, this task may be completed in small groups, for example, on a Google Doc, Google Sites, Microsoft Teams, OneNote or the Minecraft Education Edition.
Learning intention
Students:
develop an understanding of the link between urban planning and sustainability
develop an understanding of the social, economic and environmental impacts of urban planning
Success criteria
Students:
apply their understanding of sustainability and urban planning to design a city that is economically, socially and environmentally sustainable
Content
Students:
investigate the management and planning of Australia’s urban future, for example:
proposal of ways for individuals and communities to contribute to a sustainable urban future
Outcomes
A student:
GE 5-5 assesses management strategies for places and environments for their sustainability
GE 5-8 communicates geographical information to a range of audiences using a variety of strategies
Introduction
In this series of 3 lessons, students will work on a design for a sustainable city that addresses issues like urban sprawl, heat islands, traffic congestion, dependency on cars, greenhouse gas emissions, and community space for connections and exercise. This task can be done individually or in small teams. For students working remotely who wish to collaborate with others, this can be done on a Google Doc, Google Sites, Microsoft Teams, OneNote or the Minecraft Education Edition.
