In this series of lessons, students will continue learning about the implications of a growing urban population. In the first lesson, they will learn about the importance of biodiversity and conduct field work to identify the type and number of native birds in their local area. In the second lesson, they will compare 2 different types of housing developments. In the final lesson, they will identify and promote one way that individuals contribute to biodiversity and environmental sustainability in their local area.
Learning intention

Australia’s urban future
Students:
investigate the management and planning of Australia’s urban future, for example:
discussion of the implication of population forecasts for the future growth and sustainability of urban places.
explanation of strategies used to create economically, socially and environmentally sustainable urban places
proposal of ways for individuals and communities to contribute to a sustainable urban future.

In this lesson, students will continue learning about the implications or effect of a growing urban population. They will start by revising key terms in urban change. They will then investigate biodiversity through field work to identify the type and number of native birds in their local area.

In this lesson, students explore the impact of urban sprawl as a city grows and housing and development expands outwards into land that was previously open space. They also compare the impact of different types of housing developments and consider these from multiple perspectives.

In this lesson, students will develop a proposal of ways for individuals and communities to contribute to a sustainable urban future. There are a wide range of ways that individuals can contribute, including such actions as: providing animal, bird or bee shelters, avoid use of chemicals, provide a water source, planting a native garden and trees, or environmental volunteering. The task of students will be to research one of these and to then promote this to others.
