Students should understand that inequities exist due to the impact of sociocultural determinants on people. For example, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people may experience poor health because they have limited access to medical services, which leads to a reduced likelihood of seeking regular health checks, ultimately contributing to poorer health outcomes such as cancer. Moreover, compared to other Australians, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have lower levels of educational attainment, which can result in lower health literacy. This, in turn, may lead to the adoption of poor lifestyle choices that can negatively impact their health, such as engaging in risky behaviours like smoking, which increases the risk of developing lung cancer in the future.
