JUDGE INFO

Thanks for helping!

Volunteers & Judges are vital to STLP!

Every STLP event relies on competing schools providing one current/retired educator to represent their school and act as a Volunteer/Judge. Thank you for investing your time and energy into the students of STLP and the 2024 State Championship on March 27th.

Volunteer/Judge FAQs

Explore to understand what to expect on 3/27

All the "training" needed to help judge will be provided on-site (for Level 2 Judges) and via email prior to State (for Challenges). Even if you're brand new to STLP or the category you're assigned, no need to worry... we've got everything you need to be successful.  All we need is your enthusiasm to help students be successful and shine in the STLP Kentucky spotlight!

WHERE DO I PARK?

If possible, it's a great idea to drive separately from your school's bus. Many volunteer judges need to arrive earlier than the buses can get to Rupp.

Parking instructions can be found here

WHAT'S MY JOB & WHERE DO I REPORT ON 3/27

View the Judge Assignment Roster here. Reference it to determine where you've been assigned.

FOR LEVEL 2 JUDGES
Most volunteers will be Level 2 Project Judges.  All Level 2 Judges should report directly to the Level 2 Project Judge room on Second Floor. Level 2 Project Judge training begins promptly at 9:00 AM (EST). Plan to arrive  between 8:00 am and 8:30 am (Eastern Time) to sign in and join a judging team ahead of the start of training. If you're a little bit late because of bus traffic, etc. it's ok...but hurry in to limit disrupting the judge training. :)

Level 2 Judges will be provided judging materials and training necessary to be a successful Level 2 Judge the mornning of March 27th. Things to consider bringing include:

FOR CHALLENGE JUDGES/OTHER VOLUNTEERS
Other Volunteers/Judges should reference the Judge Assignments Rosters to find their location and start time. All volunteer/Judges should report directly to their assigned location.

The Category Lead for the event you're helping with may reach out to you directly with specifics about what time to arrive (these times may differ from the sheet below...follow the times from your Category Lead). Note that some volunteer assignments won't involve "judging" at all... in some cases, you will help to organize students, manage materials, or be an all-around helper.

NOTE: If you have not heard from your Challenge Area Lead, contact them for questions (list here)

Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes earlier than Start Time listed in the schedule.

WHEN WILL I BE DONE?

Each category has it's own specific (estimated) start and end time. Once your Category Lead releases you, you're free to explore the rest of the STLP State Championship, stick around for either of the Awards Ceremonies, or hit the road home.  Whatever you choose, we thank you for your time and efforts on behalf of students! We could not do this without you!

WHO CAN I SUBMIT AS OUR JUDGE?

STLP competitions are rooted in the Kentucky Academic Standards for Technology. Judges should be active or retired educators who understand the "why" behind STLP. Students deserve the opportunity to share their passions with an interested adult who is capable of providing detailed, meaningful, and kind feedback. STLP is more than a simple numerical score on a rubric. As such, STLP Judges need to be people who can supportively help all students perform at their highest levels.

Parents are amazing and 100% welcome at STLP State. However, if you are the lone school representative coming with your students, and lucky enough to have parent volunteers coming along to help, we ask that STLP Coach come to be the judge while the parents remain with the students to support them during competitions.

WHO SHOULD I SUBMIT AS OUR JUDGE?

STLP asks that all Judges be current or retired educators. But who should you submit as the judge to represent your school at State? Ask yourself this question: Who would I want to have scoring my own students?

STLP is about student growth and access to opportunity. At the STLP State Championship is concerned, we are together to select State Champions, but we need judges who will never lose sight of our higher purpose and will remember STLP is about more than rubrics and score. The trophies are amazing and fun...but the true purpose is to provide kids with opportunities to shine and be celebrated.

If you can find a judge that "gets" our purpose, then you've found who you should submit.

WHAT IF I'M THE ONLY ADULT WITH MY STUDENTS?

All materials published ahead of State registration stated that providing a volunteer/judge was the only "cost of admission" to compete at #STLP24. If you have no other help to chaperone your students, then it is important to find help before arriving to STLP State. This expectation exists at all out of school STLP sponsored events...and with the enormity and complexity of STLP State, it's more important than ever.

WHAT IF I NEED TO LEAVE EARLY?

Judging teams need to remain consistent throughout the event to provide students with the fairest of opportunities to succeed.  If you feel that you can not fulfill you entire judging duty, please confer with your school's STLP Coach so they can locate a new judge who can commit to the entire event.

On the flip side, if an emergency presents itself and you are compelled to leave early, please let your Category Lead know as soon as possible and return all scoring materials before leaving.

WHAT IF I CAN'T MAKE IT TO STLP STATE?

As soon as possible, confer with your local STLP Coach who submitted your name. The only cost of admission to STLP State for each competing school is to provide a volunteer judge. If no one shows up to represent the school, that school may be disqualified from competitions.

If you find a replacement, forward any information you may receive to that person and keep the STLP Coach informed of the change. Easy!

WAIT...THIS IS NOT WHAT I REQUESTED

Although there was an option to request specific volunteer assignments on the State registration, we did caution that jobs would be made based on program needs first. While we tried to accommodate as many requests as possible, in some instances the need was greater in other categories.

No need to worry if you have no experience in your assigned area. The Category Leads will give you all the info needed to help.

Thank you in advance for your perseverance if you have an exciting  new role for #STLP24.
