L2 Projects: Good Things to Know

How will all this work?

You're probably wondering, "What's the process for judging our L2 project? What's the timeline? What else do we have to do?". All great questions. Let's shed some light on the STLP21 Level 2 Project champion identification process:

  1. Once the deadline for submitting links to L2 project presentations exipres, projects will be randomly assigned to judging groups with other projects in the same grade division

  2. Judges will also be randomly assigned to review the projects within one of the judging groups (taking care to avoid assigning a judge to a group that includes a project from their own school). Judges will look at all of the presentations within their assigned judging group,

  3. Judges will use the links you provide in your L2 registration to access and experience your project presentations. It's very important that those links to your projects are accurate and you've verified that your presentation is viewable by anyone with the URL

  4. Using the Level 2 Rubric/Scoring Guide as a reference (review here), judges will assign scores for each of the scoring categories. If a project hits a minimum score of 91 out of a possible 100, that project is then eligible to be considered for "Best in Level 2 Group" designation by that judge

  5. Once all projects within the judging group assigned to the judge are scored, any project in the group that recieved a minimum score of 91 out of the possible 100 becomes eligible to be considered for "Best in Level 2 Group" designation by the reviewing judge.

  6. Only one project from each judging group can be named "Best in Level 2 Group"...so judges will have their work cut out for them!

  7. The project designated "Best in Level 2 Group" will move on to be considered for Level 3 judging during STLP21 State Championship Week. Details about Level 3 will be sent directly to the STLP Coach of each project advancing to Level 3.

  8. Final Level 3 Judging will determine the STLP 21 State Champion Project for the K-5, 6-8, 9-12 and Technical Divisions. Champions will be announced live on Thursday, April 29th (details here).

One-way Presentations

Tell the story of your project using any tools your team wishes to utilize. But, remember, without the benefit of Level 2 (L2) judges being able to ask questions of your presentation team, it's your task to make sure you tell the judges everything you want them to know via your presentation.

Due to the scale of L2 Project judging, and the abbreviated preparation time, L2 presentations are about telling the story of your project. However, if you project advances to Level 3, judges will connect with your team for a live video conference to ask questions and learn about your project during the State Championship Week (to be organized after L2 judging completes).

What are L2 Judges Looking For?

Want to know precisely what the judges will be looking for when they review your project presentations? No problem, just check out the L2 Project Rubric/Scoring Guide and you'll know!

Judges will reference this rubric as they experience your project. Be sure to address each of the scoring categories to help your judges see what you want them to see and remember about your project.

Be sure to review the Level 2 Scoring Guide (also found within the Updated 2020-2021 STLP Project Cycle Bundle)

Utilize the STLP KY Technology Standards Posters

The L2 Rubric/Scoring guide closely mirrors the recently adopted Kentucky Academic Standards for Technology. But, how can students be expected to know and understand KAS Technology? To help, we've published student friendly STLP posters to help students wrap their heads around what the scoring categories mean.

All Presentation Methods Are Welcome

For STLP21, project teams are free and encouraged to utilize any digital tools they see fit to use to tell the story of their project. While many will take advantage of video conferencing platforms to record presenters sharing their part of the story, teams are welcome to also utilize websites, online presentation tools, digital visualizations, shared slide decks and/or other platforms, as well.

A Few Presentation Tips

Be creative. Help your project stand out to judges by being engaging, appropriately succinct, and memorable.

Try to make your project presentation stand out from the crowd... but, try to hit that "sweet spot" where judges remain engaged and eager to explore your presentation materials without overwhelming them or dominating their time.

Hit on each of the Scoring Categories listed within the L2 Rubric/Scoring Guide. Providing clear responses to each category can help judges find the answers their looking for while also enjoying your presentation.

STLP Coaches are asked to be the STLP Judges

In an effort to streamline communications and processes, we are asking the STLP Coach who submits the registration to act as the volunteer judge for your school. Judging will take place during a window between Sunday, May 3rd and Tuesday, May 5th.
