Welcome to the STLP21 State Challenges!

ABOUT CHALLENGES:

No matter the format, the STLP State Championship has always provided 3 main competition areas:

  • Projects that advanced to Level 2 after Regionals in the fall,

  • Products that advanced from DPOJ over the winter, and...

  • Challenges that happened in conjunction with the State Championship event.

For STLP21, the Challenges included are listed (view here) with a brief explanation of how they will be held throughout April. For each Challenge category, the published rubric (see STLP Super Sheet) will form the basic foundational topic of the event...but the actual details/format of each Challenge is custom tailored to make the most of the all-digital nature of STLP21.

3 Steps for Challenge Participation

Every STLP21 Challenge has a 3 step process to participate:

  • STEP 1 - Sign Up to register your intent to participate no later than April 15

  • STEP 2 - Registered teams receive details by April 19th. Use April 19-23 to create/submit videos/demonstrations. Review and judging of Challenge entries will occur April 24-28... no late entries can be accepted!

  • STEP 3 - Watch the Awards Show on April 29th for Champions announcements

Challenge Process/Formats

Pay careful attention to the instructions/timeline for each Challenge category...they will vary.

Some will happen "Live" over virtual-meeting platforms during the STLP21 State Championship Week of April 26-29th. Others will be a "moment in time" event where competitors will be respond to a prompt and submit a link to their work by a certain date/time.

How ever the Challenges are formatted, champions from each grade division of each category will be announced during our awards broadcast on April 29th.

LIVE EVENTS:
These Challenges will happen "live" in real-time, online, via a virtual meeting space (Meet, Zoom, etc.). Invites to the online meeting space will be distributed only to registered teams. Live Events will occur during the week of April 23-29 during regular school hours. Detailed time/dates forthcoming.

Live Challenges include:

SUBMIT VIDEO:
While creating a video is not exclusive to these Challenges, sharing a video is the main focus of these events. While instructions may vary, prepare now to share your video vie YouTube for judges to access. Instructions on where to submit the link to your video will be distributed to teams that register by April 15th.

Video Challenges include:

DEMONSTRATION:
All remaining Challenge categories provide flexibility for how teams can choose to demonstrate their challenge response.
Use any format of your choosing. Some will utilize a screen capture video with narration, others might submit a website, some may utilize a URL to a slide deck or interactive document, and some may even link to a produced video...but all share one commonality: each utilize all-digital formats.

Links that teams provide must lead judges to password/permission-request free URLs. Accuracy of the links you provide is absolutely vital, as judges may not have enough time to request help if your submitted links don't work. Check all links thouroughly (from multiple devices, from multiple networks, from multiple users) BEFORE sending them for judging.

Demonstration Challenges include:

Time is a factor in each Challenge!

Once instructions are released, part of the challenge will be to develop, create, and share your demonstration before the deadline. Each Challenge has it's own unique set of requirements.

All teams must sign up to register intent to participate in Challenges by April 15th. While Live Events will occur during the STLP21 State Championship Week (April 26-29), all other Challenge categories will follow unique timelines:

  1. Registered team receive Challenge instructions by April 19th

  2. Teams have from until April 23 to create Videos/Demonstrations (varies by category)

  3. Submit links to Videos/Demonstrations no later than 4 pm, Friday, April 23rd

  4. Judges will review Challenge submission April 26-28th, with Champion announcements on April 29th

With such a tight participation timeline, there is little/no room for error. Deadlines will be strictly followed. Begin planning now for how your team will utilize the alloted times for your Challenge categories!
