Welcome to our school...
On behalf of the staff and pupils at Yester Primary School, a very warm welcome to you.
Yester Primary is a semi-rural school, located in the village of Gifford, East Lothian. We have a pupil roll of around 160 and a staff of just under 30. We are part of the Haddington cluster and Knox Academy is our catchment secondary school.
Our school opened on 16th April 1968, following the closure of several smaller schools in the surrounding areas. These were in Bolton, Morham, Garvald and Longyester. Since then, pupils from these communities have travelled to Yester Primary by bus. Today, our catchment area is extensive, with many pupils living in small villages and rural farms. While you might expect the school to be named Gifford Primary, both the village Church and the School share the name Yester, derived from Ystrad, meaning “valley.”
At Yester, we have high expectations for our pupils, our curriculum, our teaching and the support we provide. We have a positive and happy school atmosphere, where kindess is valued and learning is celebrated. Our pupils and staff are passionate about making Yester a great school.
We are proud of our school facilities and community links. We have access to fantastic outdoor spaces and we work closely with local partners, offering pupils a range of exciting learning experiences.

We hope you find our website useful. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Our vision is:
Nurturing Learning and People
Our values are:
Included Supported Successful
Our aims are:
We are proud of our school and community.
We care about everyone in our school.
We encourage each other to do our very best in everything.
We learn in a way that suits us best.
We encourage all children to try their best and contribute to our community. Children have regular opportunities to share their success or have it recognised. This can be success they have achieved within school time or outside of school. The celebration of wider achievement can occur in class, on our website and at our assemblies.
As a rural school, we are part of a small, friendly and supportive local community and this contributes to the warm and positive atmosphere at Yester. We are fortunate that a number of local businesses support us. Our partners have provided great opportunities for children to learn skills for life, learning and work.
Some classes, including our Nursery class, have made links with the senior citizens’ Good Companions and engage in various activities with them across the year.
