César Lima is an Associate Professor with Habilitation in the Department of Psychology at Iscte – University Institute of Lisbon. His research focuses on the psychology and neuroscience of music, voice and emotion (MUVE Lab). He addresses these topics by combining experimental psychology and cognitive neuroscience approaches, in healthy individuals of all ages, in specialised populations (e.g., musicians), and in clinical populations (e.g., with neurological disorders). He has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles in journals including Emotion Review, Cerebral Cortex, Brain, Current Biology, Trends in Neurosciences, Nature Reviews Neuroscience, and Annual Review of Psychology. César Lima is on the Editorial Board of Scientific Reports (category Neuroscience) and Royal Society Open Science (category Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience). Before joining ISCTE, César Lima completed his Ph.D. in Psychology at the University of Porto (2011), was a Research Associate at the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience – University College London (2012-2016), and a Senior Research Associate at the University of Porto (2016-2017). His work as principal investigator has been funded by the British Academy and by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology.
Dr. Molinaro completed his PhD in Cognitive Science in 2007 at UPadova (Italy). He spent half of his PhD at UWashington (Seattle, WA), working with Prof. Lee Osterhout and Dr. Albert Kim. In 2008, he moved to the University La Laguna (Tenerife, Spain) to work with Prof. Manuel Carreiras ("Juan de la Cierva" grant, 2008-2010). Across these experiences, he developed his early work on the relation between syntactic and semantic processing in sentence comprehension and proposed a time-dynamic ERP-based neurocognitive model of sentence processing (Cortex, 2011). In 2010, Dr. Molinaro joined the Basque center on Cognition, Brain and Language (BCBL) as a post-doc and he was promoted Staff Scientist in 2012. In 2014, he was granted a Ikerbasque Research Fellowship aimed at understanding the oscillatory mechanisms involved in speech perception. With his team (Brain Rhythms and Cognition group), he started working on the brain sensitivity to the pseudo-rhythmic nature of speech in typical and atypical populations. In an influential study, he reported that speech-brain oscillatory coupling in the prosody time rate (~0.5 Hz) is impaired in developmental dyslexics (compared to control peers) independently of age and reading experience (Human Brain Mapping, 2016). In 2019, he has been promoted to Ikerbasque Associate Professor and in 2023 to Ikerbasque Research Professor. He is part of the scientific committee of the BCBL and is scientific coordinator of the MEG lab. Dr. Molinaro is PI of various projects focusing on oscillatory speech perception in typical (young bilingual adults, children learning to read), atypical (developmental dyslexia, stutterers) and special (toddlers, professional musicians) populations and PI of the research grants PCI2022-135031-2 (2022-2024), PDC2022-133917-I00 (2022-2023) from the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and University and of the #neural2speech IKUR initiative (2023-2024). He has been Trustee of the two Severo Ochoa Excellence grants to the BCBL. In the last years he gave 2 Open-public talks and intervened on local medias (Radio Euskadi) about the benefits of rhythm processing for language acquisition. He has supervised 9 PhD students, 6 of which have accessed post-doc positions in international labs. Dr. Molinaro’s research is highly influential and internationally recognized. Indeed, the research of the Brain Rhythms and Cognition group addresses scientific issues at the frontiers of neurobiology of language research. He was invited to give >30 talks in international labs and has developed collaborations with researchers from various institutions (>50 co-authors of different nationalities). Ongoing collaborations both at international (Prof. Magnusson, UConn; Dr. Busan, San Camillo Hospital; Dr. Bourguignon, UBrussels; Dr. Melloni, MPI Frankfurt; Dr. Meyer, MPI Leipzig) and local levels (Musikene music academy; AEK language academy) ensure the continuity of the research activity of the group. Dr. Molinaro is Academic Editor of the journals Scientific Reports and PLOS ONE. He has been reviewer for various granting agencies in Spain, Italy, Israel, South America and USA.
Sabine Levi was originally hired as Cnrs researcher at Ecole Normale Superieure in the laboratory of Antoine Triller. Then, she developed her own team at Inserm (Institut du Fer à Moulin, Paris) and now at Cnrs (ESPCI, Paris). Her main research topic focuses on the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the activity-dependent stabilization of excitatory and inhibitory synapses during development, and those that regulate the plasticity of mature synapses. She is a specialist of state-of-the-art neurotechnologies such as single-molecule tracking and super-resolution STORM/PALM nanoscopy allowing to study membrane dynamics as well as the synaptic organization at the nanometric scale. She is also investigating the morphological and behavioral correlate of such nanoscopic mechanisms with an interest towards memory, social interactions as well as anxiety or epilepsy. Recently, she provided breakthrough data demonstrating the role of purinergic signaling in the fate of nascent GABAergic synapses; but also demonstrated the importance of the 'diffusion-capture' mechanism in the regulation of GABAA receptors at inhibitory synapses, the link with chloride homeostasis and Wnk/Spak kinases data of particular importance in the epilepsy field. To achieve her studies, Sabine Levi has been regularly and successfully funded with 2.3M€ collected the last 5 years, including an excellence label by the Fondation pour la Recherche Médicale. Sabine Levi has published 45 original works in excellent to outstanding journals (among others: Science, Neuron, Brain, Molecular Psychiatry, Cell Reports).
Science Communication Symposium
Director of Communication at Instituto Superior Técnico. Professor in Science Communication and Social Media for Scientists, FCSH NOVA and Universidade Nova de Lisboa Doctoral School. Coordinator of science radio show 90 Segundos de Ciência (since 2016), multimedia program Explica-me como se tivesse cinco anos (since 2020) and science podcast 110 histórias | 110 Objetos (since 2021). Founder and former President of Portuguese Science Communicators Network SciComPT. With previous experience as researcher (PhD in Organic Chemistry, 2009) and as university professor (ULHT, 2004-2013), Joana Lobo Antunes moved on as a professional science communicator at FCSH and ITQB NOVA in 2012. From 2016-2019, she was appointed Head of ITQB NOVA Communication Office, leading a team of 4 in institutional communication, media relations, design and image and outreach activities. From 2014-2016, she took the role of executive director at Centro Ciência Viva de Sintra, working at connecting researchers with the Science Center, planning Science Center activities, coordinating the team and the Center’s communication. In 2019, she moved to Instituto Superior Técnico where she founded the Science Communication Group within Communication department that mobilized all 24 research units into a regular meeting, with the goal of capacitation and empowerment of all scicom officers. In 2020, Lobo Antunes became Head of Communication, Image and Marketing that includes Science Communication Group, Public Relations and Media Office (GCRP) and Student Support Unit (NAPE). She is also part of the Diversity and Gender Balance at Técnico. She has been a lecturer in Science Communication and Social Media for Scientists, at doctoral and master courses at Universidade Nova de Lisboa, and her main interests are the use of theatre improvisation techniques and storytelling in Science Communication. Additionally, she engages with scientists to use social media tools to connect and interact with peers and lay persons, improving science visibility and public image of scientists.
