Hi, my name is Amalia Sa’ar. I’m a cultural anthropologist, a feminist, and a peace activist. In my academic capacity I’m an associate professor and chair of the anthropology dept. at the U of Haifa.

Ongoing  and recent research projects:

Modest fashion and the cosmopolitan condition, with Dalit Simchai (supported by the Haifa Lab for Religious Studies). 

Ultra-religious women and quality employment, comparing Jews, Muslims, and Druzes, with Michal Frenkel and Ebtisam Barakat (Study supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology)

Transnational Palestinian families, with Thomas Malsch and Sami Adwan, and PhD candidate Shihab Idrees (Study supported by DFG Trilateral program)

We explore cultural change following migration and new, transnational relationships among extended families. 

Gender, security, and ethics in asymmetrical war, with  Sarai Aharoni and Alisa Lewin . (Study supported by Israel Science Foundation)

We used diverse research tools to explore experiences of insecurity among wo/men from diverse groups in Israeli society, particularly in the peripheries, alongside ethical perceptions regarding asymmetrical war.

Palestinian career women in Israel, with Hawazin Younis (Study supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology)

We talk to women in high tech, law, and medicine, focusing on the challenges, breakthroughs, as well as the cultural scripts that guide their strategizing.

Generational relations in Israeli feminism, with Dalit Simchai and Alisa Lewin

This multi-methodology study looks at Jewish and Arab students’ perceptions of feminism and femininity.
