Description of the Activity
For younger children this activity should be undertaken with an adult. Older students may undertake the activity in pairs so long as COVID-19 social distancing is maintained.
Download and print the map for the chosen walk and place in a waterproof ziplock bag. https://www.environment.act.gov.au/parks-conservation/parks-and-reserves/recreational_activities/self-guided-walks
Pack suitable food and water. 1 litre water per person should be adequate. In hotter months more water should be carried. Do not expect water to be available along the route of the walk. To maintain COVID-19 safety do not share water bottles.
Estimate how long you will take to do the walk
Let someone know where you are planning to walk and when you expect to be home.
Questions to talk about with your child
At different points along the work ask your child to point the direction of home/the car.
Ask your child to point north. Talk about finding north.. (where the sun is at midday.. remember to adjust for daylight saving)
Take a photo of any plants that your child would like to identify when back at home - ask them how they would go about identifying them. (Hint: https://anbg.gov.au/plant-identification/index.html)
