Description of the Activity
Go for a walk with your child around where you live.
Tell your child they are to look for as many different green natural objects such as leaves, grass, etc (not man-made objects).
Were appropriate take a small sample of the green object and place it in your collection bag.
IMPORTANT COLLECTION RULES: Samples should not be collected from someone else’s garden without permission, or from any living animal (such as a beetle or bird. Feathers picked up from the ground are ok).
When you get home count the number of samples your child collected.
Ask your child to arrange the samples in a line from the lightest shade of green to the darkest shade of green.
This activity can be repeated over a number of days choosing a different colour each day.
Questions to talk about with your child
Before the walk, ask your child to estimate (guess) the number of samples they think they will find (write their answer down). After the walk talk to them about whether they found more or less and why.
If you can do this activity over a few days, with a range of colours, ask your child why there may be more of one colour than another? Ask them if the range of colours would stay the same for the whole year? (hint – autumn is just around the corner).
Links for further learning
Compare the range of colours from around the world. The following is a link to WebCams from around the world https://www.webcamtaxi.com/en/landscape.html. With your child look at a few of these cameras and talk about the range of colours that they can see.
