Happy New Year to all of our EES families. January is always about fresh beginnings and positive change. I love the promise of the New Year and all the possibilities that exist for our students.
Here are some tips to help students start the New Year off on a positive note...
Get Plenty of Sleep: It is proven that students who do not get enough sleep have difficulty paying attention. Recommended amounts of sleep range from 8.5 to 11 hours a night for elementary students.
Eat Healthy: Encourage your children to eat more fruit and vegetables, and drink water daily. Limit the amount of soda, juice and snack food your children eat.
Follow the Golden Rule: Treat others the way you would like to be treated.
Time + Effort = Achievement: Encourage your children to take the time to carefully complete all assignments at school/home and eliminate the word "can't" from their vocabulary. Students are encouraged to make it a goal to do their best every day!
Read, Read, Read: Read to get information, read for fun, read to someone in your family... just READ!
Attend School Regularly & On Time: The school day begins promptly at 8:50 AM. Students can make up written work when they are absent or late, BUT they can never make up the learning experiences in the classroom.

Are you curious about the important skills students are learning in math or how you can support your child with math? In learning math students develop problem solving skills and understand connections between numbers, shapes, patterns and data. This video provides an overview about the instructional goals and guiding principles of the math that students are learning in elementary grades: EngageNY A Story of Units. For more information about the goals of math instruction in each grade level, check out the Parent Roadmaps to the Common Core Standards - Mathematics.
There are many opportunities for students to apply and extend their math learning in their lives outside of school. For example, parents and care givers can ask questions that relate math to games, daily activities at home, during travel, or while shopping. Conversations involving math in everyday contexts can help students see it as a way to be curious and find patterns and connections in the world and in their personal interests. For more information about relating math to playful activities and daily life at home and in the community check out Helping Your Child Learn Mathematics.
The counseling team continues to bring powerful lessons on social-emotional learning to K-6 classrooms. Recently, classrooms participated in a Kindness Challenge inspired by Jacqueline Woodson’s Each Kindness. Students shared small acts of kindness that they had offered to brighten someone else’s day. They each dropped a stone into the water to symbolize how kindness can ripple outward, supporting and inspiring others.
Do you or your EES student need to talk to one of our counselors or social workers? Looking for counseling or social-emotional resources? Check out the ECS School Counseling Page.
Our social-emotional theme for December is self-management , which is all about managing our emotions.

School starts at 8:50 AM. There is no outside supervision before 8:45AM. Students SHOULD NOT come earlier unless they are eating breakfast.
Please make sure you always have your ID available when coming to the school. You will need it for picking up your child and for entering the building.
Dismissal time can be very hectic. All dismissal changes must be done before 2:00PM.
With the cold weather here, we encourage the students to dress in layers, as we cannot predict the temperature throughout the day. We will continue to go outside for recess & snack.
The Elementary School has an email address that all correspondence to the office can be emailed to: esoffice@ecs.k12.ny.us
This email can be used for dismissal changes, absent notes, updating information, etc.
Any changes in phone number, address, or people allowed to pick up your child? Please contact the office, so your child’s emergency form can be updated. No student will be allowed to go home with anyone not listed on the emergency form.
