Dr. Michael Sasscer is foremost a teacher and has committed his work to education for 23 years. His journey in education began in high school when he was awarded the NC Teaching Fellows scholarship to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Sasscer believes meaningful, productive collaboration will unleash new ideas and methods for empowering life-long learners. As a school leader, he is passionate about re-shaping mindsets to think intentionally about ways to build new capacities to seek instructional innovation, excellence and equity.

Dr. Sasscer entered school leadership as a NC Principal Fellow. His career has provided invaluable experience at each level of education: elementary, middle and high. Most recently, Dr. Sasscer served Dare County Schools as a Principal at Manteo Middle School. Formerly, he served Currituck County Schools as a Principal at Jarvisburg Elementary School and as an Assistant Principal at Currituck County High School. He also served as an Assistant Principal with Alamance-Burlington Schools at Marvin B. Smith Elementary School.

Dr. Sasscer has served the school system as both the Interim Superintendent and the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction. Prior to joining Edenton-Chowan Schools, he served as Principal of Manteo Middle School, in Dare County. Previously, he served as the Principal of Jarvisburg Elementary School after serving as an Assistant Principal at Currituck County High School in Currituck County Schools. He also served as an assistant principal with Alamance-Burlington Schools at Marvin B. Smith Elementary School.

Prior to becoming a school administrator, he taught high school mathematics for 10 years teaching all levels of high school mathematics including Advanced Placement Calculus. Dr. Sasscer is a former North Carolina Teaching Fellow, a former North Carolina Principal Fellow and is a National Board Certified Teacher. He has also served as a Varsity and JV baseball coach.

During his career he completed the Distinguished Leadership in Practice Program provided by the North Carolina Principals and Assistant Principals’ Association; served as a guest speaker for the North Carolina Association of School Administrators 2019 Conference on Education Leadership; presented at the Northeast Regional Education Services Alliance 2017 Fall Conference; presented at the North Carolina Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development 2017 Annual Conference and at the Northeast Regional Education Services Alliance 2016 Fall Conference. In 2016 he authored a publication titled “The Influence of the Principal’s Style on a School’s Academic Press, Sense of Community, and Student Achievement.” Dr. Sasscer participated in Cohort IV of the Aspiring Superintendents’ Program sponsored by the North Carolina School Superintendents’ Association.

The success of our schools has been shaped by leaders of great character and I am truly humbled to stand on their shoulders as we continue to care for the growth of our children,” Dr. Sasscer stated. “Serving together with our school leaders and outstanding faculty to provide an exceptional educational experience for every single child is a gift I cherish.”

Dr. Sasscer earned a Doctorate of Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also holds a Master of School Administration and a Master of Arts in Teaching from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A public school graduate, Dr. Sasscer was the valedictorian of his graduating class at Manteo High School.
