Chandler Bass Named 2022-2023 ECPS Teacher of the Year

Ms. Bass is a 4th grade teacher at DF Walker Elementary School, who dedicates her talent to create learning experiences that challenge every single student to better their best! Michelle Newsome Named 2022-2023 ECPS Principal of the Year

Congratulations to White Oak Elementary School Principal Mrs. Michelle Newsome for being selected by her peers to be the 2022-23 Edenton-Chowan Schools Principal of the Year! Mrs. Newsome has quickly made her mark as she is taking every single cubbie places in our vision to achieve excellence through transforming experiences!

Ms. Newsome began her education career in Hertford County Schools as an elementary teacher before transitioning to teach at the elementary level in Gates County Schools. Ms. Newsome also has education experience as a Family Service Specialist for the Methodist Home for Children in Winton NC. Ms. Newsome joined the ECPS family at the “happiest place in Chowan County” in August 2018.

Ms. Newsome earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education from Chowan University and Masters of School Administration from East Carolina University. Ms. Newsome served as ECPS Assistant Principal of the Year in 2020-21. She was recognized as Teacher of the Year on two separate occasions while at Buckland Elementary School in Gates County. She has also received the RBC Bank Tribute to Teachers Award.

Grantley Mizelle Named 2022-2023 ECPS Assistant Principal of the Year

Congratulations to John A. Holmes High School Assistant Principal Mr. Grantley Mizelle for being selected by his peers to be the 2022-23 Edenton-Chowan Schools Assistant Principal of the Year!

Mr. Grantley Mizelle leads as one of two assistant principals at John A. Holmes High School. Mr. Mizelle’s career began in Bertie County Schools and Martin County Schools prior to his arrival at Chowan Middle School where he also served as assistant principal.

Mr. Mizelle’s experiences as a classroom teacher, Head Football Coach, and Athletic Director molded him into a passionate leader who believes that he must strive to better serve students each and every day. He puts this belief into practice through seeking opportunities to learn something new daily and through developing strong relationships with all students. Mr. Mizelle is an undergraduate of Barton College and holds graduate degrees from West Virginia University and Elizabeth City State University.
