REGISTRATION AND ENROLMENT
How do new students register for private lessons or ensembles?
On the main page of the Music School, links to the different family of instruments can be found. Each page will hold a complete program description, as well as a link to the enrolment form and the Terms and Conditions for enroling. An online inscription form must be submitted before any students, new or returning, may begin lessons.
When will new students be placed with a teacher?
New student registrations are confirmed early September. Students already studying with a Music School teacher will confirm their lesson day and time directly with their teacher.
How are new students placed with a private lesson teacher?
After an enrolment form is received, the Music School team will suggest a teacher based on the student’s age, musical background, goals and scheduling preferences. Parents may list any additional student information in the Comments box at the bottom of the enrolment form. All efforts will be made to honour requests for specific teachers, days and times included on the enrolment form. New students and parents are encouraged to meet with the the proposed teacher and to observe lessons of current students in advance of making a commitment to lessons.
What type of commitment is needed to enroll for lessons?
Enrolment for private instrumental lessons in the Music School requires a full year commitment. Enrollment for ensembles and classes, unless otherwise indicated in the class description is on a per term/semester basis.
Are trial lessons offered to new students?
Trial lessons are not offered through the Music School.
How long do lessons run?
Private instrumental lessons begin on the third week of school and run for 32 lessons weeks. Please see class description to confirm start and end dates for ensembles and group classes.
What does the tuition for private instrumental lessons include?
Tuition for private instrumental lessons includes one weekly lesson and participation in music theory classes and instrumental ensembles.
Placement into the appropriate ensembles is determined by the private instrumental teacher and the director of the ensemble. Each instrumental family page on the website shows a complete list of ensemble classes that are open to those instrumental students.
When is tuition due?
Tuition bills for Music School activities are sent near the end of each semester, twice a year.
INSTRUMENTS
Instrument Rental/Purchase
The Music School does not supply rental instruments. New students should consult with their private instrumental teacher to determine the type of instrument to rent or purchase.
Is it necessary for Music School students to have their own instruments?
All Music School students, with the exception of Voice and Percussion Ensemble students, must have an instrument at home for the student to maintain regular practice.
Do students need to bring their own instruments for use during their private lesson?
With the exception of pianos and drums, the Music School does not supply instruments for student use during private lessons and ensembles.
Piano/Keyboard Instrument Requirements
Music School piano students should have regular access to a standard and well-maintained acoustic piano. Important reasons for this include the need for students to have a closer physical connection to their sound production, as well as the fact that most lessons and performances inside and outside the Music School take place on acoustic pianos. If access to an acoustic piano is not possible, a digital piano may be used.
A digital piano should meet the following minimum specifications:
The piano keyboard must have 88 keys with graded action to reproduce the key weight and dynamic range of an acoustic piano. Voicing should contain the “Grand Piano” setting and be stereo sampled.
The keyboard should have an ample stand to allow a proper sitting position and have functioning pedals to offer the damper and una corda (soft pedal) options.
ATTENDANCE
What if a student needs to miss a lesson?
Regular attendance is expected of all students and they should make every effort to attend. Lessons missed by students cannot be replaced and will be billed. In case of a student absence due to a conflict between the scheduled lesson and the scheduling of a mandatory school curricular activity or exam (not including school trips), the missed lesson will be replaced. An advance notice of two weeks before the conflict must be given to the private teacher before being considered an Excused Student Absence. Excused Student Absences where replacement lessons were not able to be given will result in a credit for these lessons. Credits for all lessons are applied in Semester 2 billing. Lessons missed due to student illness cannot be replaced, unless it is of 2 or more consecutive monthes and justified by a medical certificate.
My child broke their arm, what happens now?
Scheduled lessons continue through the period of convalescence. Lesson time will be used to review music theory and explore instrumental repertoire and styles.
What if my teacher is absent?
In case of a teacher's absence, a replacement lesson will be proposed. However, once a replacement lesson time has been agreed upon, the Terms and Conditions of the inscription are applied. Refusal of proposed replacement lessons will not result in reimbursement. Lessons missed due to a teacher’s absence or to an Excused Student Absence where replacement lessons were not able to be given will result in a credit for these lessons. Credits for all lessons are applied in Semester 2.
STUDENT RECITALS
What performance opportunities are there for students?
Performance is an important part of music study for students of all levels. One of the advantages of attending the Music School is the opportunity to participate in student performances in a supportive environment. The last weeks of each term are reserved for Music School student concerts.
How can students participate in Music School concerts?
Once a teacher decides that a piece is ready to be performed, they will register the student.
What is the dress code for student performers in the Music School concerts?
Students are encouraged to dress appropriately for all concerts. The work they dedicated to learning their performance piece should be respected and how students are dressed reflects this. In this context, sport shoes, shorts, t-shirts and sweatpants are not appropriate.
