The Tibialis Posterior Tendon courses along the inner aspect of the ankle, behind and below the ankle knob, down into the foot. The tibialis posterior muscle helps you to “plantarflex” your ankle, which means to point it downward as if pushing a gas pedal. It also “inverts” the ankle, which means to turn it inward.
Tibialis Posterior Tendinitis causes pain along the inner ankle and is often due to overuse and an overpronated foot (flattened arch). Treatment includes correcting arch abnormalities through the use of orthotics or arch supports, ice, modalities, stretching and strengthening exercises, taping and a possible reduction in physical activities depending upon the severity. See your athletic trainer or doctor for an injury evaluation.
