The Lateral Ankle Sprain If you twisted your ankle or foot inward, you sprained the ankle ligaments located below the outer bony ankle knob. This injury typically involves the anterior talofibular ligament, but can involve other ligaments as well. Lateral ankle sprains are the most common, accounting for 85% of all sprains.
The Medial Ankle Sprain Twisting your ankle or foot outward can sprain the deltoid ligament, located below the inner bony ankle knob. This type of ankle sprain is not very common.
The High Ankle Sprain Twisting your ankle or foot outward can also sprain the tibiofibular ligaments. These structures connect the main shin bone (tibia) with the smaller lower leg bone (fibula) just above the ankle. The tibiofibular ligaments are located above the outer bony ankle knob area where most sprains occur, which is why this is called a “high” ankle sprain.
