Mr. Tonguis

Meet the teacher:

Hello everyone! My name is Taylor Tonguis and I couldn’t be more excited about teaching 7th grade math. As a student in high school, while other students were enjoying free time on the weekends, I was waking up at 5:00 A.M. to compete in math competitions. I’ve always enjoyed competition in various challenges of strategy and skill. Outside of scholastic events, I’ve also competed on a national level at card games and video games. My board game collection is extensive ranging from casual to complex strategy games. When I want to give my brain a rest I enjoy reading, movies, and cooking. I’m a big fan of science fiction but not so much fantasy. I’ve always preferred to imagine things that are theoretically possible rather than outside our understanding of science.

Before teaching I worked as a chef and restaurateur for 15 years. While I love cooking for my family and I, the part of the job I found most fulfilling was team building and mentoring. I met my now wife while working as the chef at a local restaurant. She now teaches 8th grade ELA right here at Sherwood Middle! We have two awesome adopted dogs, Wyatt and Pax. We like to travel and enjoy the outdoors since it’s hard to appreciate it here with the intense heat and mosquitoes. I treat math like a puzzle as I bring my passion for learning and problem solving into the classroom to show students that there is no one that "can't" do something, only those who can't do it, yet.
