Lower Macungie Middle School
JoAnn Welsko teaches 7th-grade Reading at Lower Macungie Middle School. She enjoys talking about all genres of literature and helping students find "just right for them" books.
Outside the classroom, Mrs. Welsko likes to do her best to keep learning: home projects, a dance class, writing poetry, and traveling.
When she's not teaching, Mrs. Welsko enjoys taking long walks, reading, listening to podcasts, watching documentaries, shopping, and spending time with her husband and two sons.
In this unit, students will analyze character traits and motivations; interpret figurative language and literary devices; recognize themes and their development throughout the text; make connections between different parts of a text; compare and contrast characters and settings; evaluate the reliability and perspective of the narrator.
Students will be able to apply their skills in citing textual evidence, analyzing themes, and interpreting language to critically engage with a variety of texts beyond the classroom. Students will keep considering...
How do narrative stories teach us about our world?
In what ways do the interactions between story elements, such as setting, characters, and plot, contribute to the development of the theme or central idea of a text?
Poetry
Students will be able to independently use their learning to analyze and interpret poetry and other literary forms, appreciating the use of figurative language, structure, and themes
In this unit, students will be able to independently use their learning to gather information from a first-hand account of a historical event.
In seventh grade, we enjoy a variety of Units of Study throughout the three trimesters. The outline below provides a quick summary of each.
You don't need all of these supplies. We will have some available in the classroom for all students to use.
1-2 notebooks, depending on size, for Reading class only
2 packs of #2 pencils
1 two-pocket folder
Highlighters and/or colored pens/pencils for annotating text
1 set of headphones or earbuds (for classroom technology use)
You can always email me with questions, but the best way to see what we're doing in class and if your child has assignments coming up is by getting connected on the following two programs!
Check out our Family Tech Resources Website! The purpose of this site is to provide both students and families of the East Penn School District resources on the technology they are using in the classroom. Some of the resources are created by East Penn, while others may be created by the companies themselves.
