Dear Students and Families,
Summer is a great time to rediscover a love of reading and explore new things. We hope students will visit the town library and locate books that bring them to new places and ideas.
In collaboration with Hagaman Memorial Library, East Haven Public Schools challenges you to Just Read It!! Read for fun, read to learn a new skill, read to relax, read to visit a new place, read to enjoy some time alone or read with someone you love! Find a friend to talk about what you have read or start your own book club on the beach or while taking a hike in a park.
To encourage your student's reading achievements, as well as to improve their school academic performance, the English/Language Arts Department and our school and local libraries recommend that you read as much as possible during the summer!
All students enrolled in JMMS Advanced Reading (grades 7 and 8) and High School Honors/AP level courses are required to read a teacher-selected text, the title of which is noted on the bottom of their class list. Teachers will provide information directly to students through email once schedules for next year have been finalized, so please be on the lookout in the forthcoming days! This required text will be addressed and evaluated as part of the first unit of study of the school year. Students are encouraged to read carefully and complete a note-taking document, as you/they will be responsible for providing textual support during book discussions.
Hagaman Memorial Library, the EHHS English Department, EHHS Media Specialists and JMMS Literacy Specialist worked collaboratively on information and reading suggestions for a variety of grade levels. More information on these and other titles can be found on the East Haven Summer Reading website located at https://sites.google.com/east-haven.k12.ct.us/east-haven-summer-reading.
Take out an ebook or audiobook from the Sora library! Do you have a Kindle or Kindle App? You can even send it to your kindle/app!

We appreciate and encourage parent input during this selection process. This input will ensure that students choose books that are suitable for their interests, maturity and reading ability. The options are limitless, but we encourage you to choose titles that will interest and challenge you to grow as readers and thinkers.
There will be no summer reading “test” in the fall. Teachers will engage students in a discussion of their summer reading in September, so make sure you are prepared to have your voice heard in this conversation. As you read, please use either the written reading log or the electronic log for the Superintendent’s Reading Challenge. Your teacher will be collecting this log at the beginning of the year and looking to see that you:
Read over the summer (Three+ books would knock our socks off!)
Tried to be "adventurous" in your choices
Are prepared to discuss your ideas about your book(s) and what it meant to you
Help us meet the summer reading goal of 20,000 books across the district!
Please direct any questions to ELA Instructional Leader, Erica Tamsin, etamsin@east-haven.k12.ct.us.
Have a wonderful summer and thank you for supporting our summer reading program!
