Who should attend the workshop?

The Indigenous Mapping Workshop is for members of, or people working directly with, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities or organisations in Australia. Preference will be given to:

  • Decision-makers and mapping or technology specialists
  • Applicants who demonstrate interest and ability to implement and make effective use of Google mapping technology within their community
  • Applicants who are currently working on mapping projects, or are planning mapping projects in their communities.

Do I need to have a background in GIS?

The Indigenous Mapping Workshop offers different training streams for each of the tools, from beginner to advanced. We seek to create accessible programming for all levels and experiences. If you have any concerns or would like to know what to expect at the workshop, please feel free to contact us. We would be more than happy to help you out!

How much does the workshop cost?

The workshop is offered to participants free of cost. There are a limited number of seats for workshop attendees. Those interested in the workshop must apply and confirm acceptance into the workshop before making travel arrangements.

What are the accommodations for the event?

Attendees are responsible for booking their own transportation and lodging (if needed). We have currently organised discounts at two (2) hotels in Perth; Parmelia Hilton and Adina Apartments. Details on how to book and utilise these discounts is available on the accommodation page.

What is included in the workshop?

Training modules: Access to 18 hours of Mapping and Geospatial training sessions including Google, Mapbox, ArcGis, Qgis, Fulcrum and Mapping with Drones.

Plenary sessions: Entry to keynote and participant presentations.

Food and beverages: Breakfast, lunch and snacks are provided to all participants. A welcome dinner will be provided on the first night.

Training materials: Access to all the training materials and datasets.

Attendees are responsible for the cost of their own transportation, lodging and any other travel costs.

How do I apply for the Indigenous Mapping Workshop Grant?

In order to apply for an IMW Grant, you must first be an approved attendee to the Indigenous Mapping Workshop. If you haven't already, you can email us at indigenousmappingworkshop@gmail.com as online applications are closed. An RSVP email will be sent if your application is successful, which will include a timeline of requirements for the project you must present in order to go into the running for a grant.
